Chapter 5
The Poisoned Pen
Bound by the Billionaire's Will · Chloe Davenport · 5 min read
Halfway through the gala dinner in the Temple of Dendur, Clara excused herself to the powder room to adjust her earring.
The marble-lined restroom was quiet, smelling of tuberose and expensive soap. Clara was checking her reflection in the gilded mirror when the door clicked open behind her.
Victoria Sterling entered, letting the heavy door swing shut.
The twenty-eight-year-old heiress to Sterling Financial approached the sinks, crossing her arms over her chest, eyeing Clara with dripping condescension.
"Quite a performance tonight, Clara," Victoria spoke, her voice laced with venom. "I suppose when your family's shipyards are facing foreclosure, you’ll do anything to keep the lights on—even selling yourself to a man who will never love you."
Clara calmly washed her hands with lavender soap, drying her fingers on a linen towel before turning to face Victoria.
"I didn't sell myself, Victoria," Clara replied calmly, her cerulean eyes cool as ice. "I entered into a mutual partnership with Arthur Vance’s blessing. Something I imagine you know very little about, considering you walked away from Liam the moment his first rocket booster failed five years ago."
Victoria’s face twisted into an ugly sneer. "Liam was a broken, obsessive workaholic. I left him because he cared more about his titanium engines than taking me to Monaco. And mark my words, darling... Liam will sleep with you, he will parade you before the board for twelve months, and then he will discard you like an old balance sheet."
"Then it’s fortunate I am not looking for a prince, Victoria," Clara retorted smoothly, stepping past her toward the exit. "I am looking for a partner. And unlike you, I don't run when the pressure gets high."
Clara pushed the door open, stepping out into the grand gallery—and froze.
Liam stood ten feet away in the hallway, leaning against a Roman marble sarcophagus, an untouched glass of champagne in his hand. He had clearly heard every single word through the partially opened door.
Victoria hurried out, putting on a sweet, flirty pout as she approached Liam. "Liam, darling! I was just telling your little bride how wonderful it is that you’ve found someone to help with the family obligations—"
Liam didn't even look at Victoria. His storm-gray eyes were locked entirely onto Clara, burning with a dark, intense pride that took Clara’s breath away.
"Victoria," Liam spoke, his voice cutting through the gallery with the chill of an arctic winter. "If you ever corner my wife again, I will instruct our treasury team to pull our forty-billion-dollar aerospace bond portfolio from your father’s bank by nine o'clock tomorrow morning."
Victoria gasped, her face draining of all color. "Liam! You wouldn't—"
"Try me," Liam growled softly.
He stepped forward, offering his arm to Clara. Clara took it, her heart pounding with a strange, intoxicating rush of vindication.
"Let's go home, Clara," Liam whispered softly, leading her away, leaving his ex-fiancée trembling in humiliated silence.
In the grand Roman gallery of the Met, Victoria Sterling stood trembling in humiliated fury, her face pale as her father, David Sterling, rushed up to her side.
"Victoria! What on earth did you say to Liam Vance?!" David hissed, his knuckles white around his glass. "One of my people in the lobby just texted me! Liam threatened to pull the Vance forty-billion-dollar bond portfolio! If he does that, our stock will drop twenty percent by market open!"
Victoria choked on her rage, tears of venomous spite springing to her eyes. "He was defending that little scamp from Brooklyn, Father! He looked at her as if she were made of diamonds!"
"Because she is made of diamonds, you foolish girl!" David snapped in disgust. "Clara Montgomery just closed an eight-billion-dollar European aerospace contract in five minutes using fluent French, while you stood in the bathroom screeching like an insecure child! Stay away from them!"
Liam led Clara down a quiet service corridor and out through the private museum exit, his fingers laced tightly through hers.
As they stepped into the quiet night air of Fifth Avenue, Liam pulled her into the sheltered alcove of the limestone columns.
He reached up, his thumb gently stroking her flushed cheek, his gray eyes searching hers in the dim streetlamp glow.
"You were magnificent tonight, Clara," Liam whispered, his voice thick with raw emotion. "My grandfather always told me that the greatest asset a man could ever have was a partner who stood with him in the fire. He was right."
Clara looked into his eyes, her heart fluttering. "We are in this together, Liam."
Liam smiled softly, his fingers tightening around hers as they stepped into the waiting armored Maybach.
As the armored Maybach pulled away from the museum into the Fifth Avenue rain, Clara looked at Liam, who was staring out the window at the glowing streetlights.
"Did you mean what you said to Victoria back there, Liam?" she asked quietly. "About pulling the forty-billion-dollar bond portfolio?"
Liam turned his head, his storm-gray eyes holding hers with absolute, unwavering conviction. "Every single word. David Sterling and his daughter think they can intimidate my family because they hold legacy banking shares. They don't realize that I don't give a damn about their social pedigree. You are my wife, Clara. An insult against you is an attack on House Vance. And I destroy anyone who attacks what belongs to me."
Clara felt a warm, electric shiver race down her spine, the fierce protectiveness in his voice melting the last lingering defenses around her heart.
As the Maybach navigated the wet Manhattan streets toward Teterboro Airport, Clara rested her head against Liam's shoulder, feeling the steady rise and fall of his chest.
"Julian is going to try something desperate, isn't he?" Clara asked quietly, looking at the rain streaking the tinted glass.
Liam tightened his arm around her, his voice hard as tempered steel. "Julian is welcome to try. He has three hedge funds backing his board challenge, but he doesn't realize that our new European contract gives us seventy percent voting proxy control. He is walking into a trap of his own making."
Liam turned her face to his, his fingers gently lifting her chin. "You don't need to worry about Julian, Clara. As long as I draw breath, no one will ever touch you or your shipyard."
Halfway across town, Liam took Clara's hand again, his touch grounding and protective. 'Never let people like Victoria make you question your worth, Clara,' Liam said softly, looking into her eyes. 'You have more brilliance and integrity in your little finger than that entire ballroom combined.' Clara smiled through the mist, her fingers tightening around his, knowing that with Liam at her side, no enemy could ever touch her.
The city lights reflected off the dark waters of the Hudson River as the Maybach crossed the George Washington Bridge. Liam looked at Clara, his thumb caressing the platinum ring on her hand. 'You are a force of nature, Clara Montgomery,' he murmured with quiet awe. Clara leaned into his shoulder, whispering softly, 'Only when I have a partner worth fighting for, Liam.'
Together in the warmth of the Maybach, they watched the city rain wash away the past, leaving only their unshakeable future ahead.
