Chapter 5

The Shadow in the Clearing

Bound to the Immortal Prince · Devendra Katariya · 6 min read

Mira ran through the freezing darkness of the Black Ridge, her breath coming in ragged gasps that burned her lungs like crushed glass. The terrain was brutal—jagged limestone boulders slick with black moss, deep ravines filled with rotting timber, and thorny briars that tore at her wool cloak and leather boots. But she knew every deer trail and badger hole in these hills; the heavy armored warhorses of the Citadel could not follow her into the rocky fissures.

Or so she had believed.

Behind her, the sound of hoofbeats was not clattering clumsily through the brush. A single horseman was pursuing her with unnatural, terrifying speed, guiding his mount over fallen trunks and through narrow stone gaps as though he possessed the night-eyes of an owl.

The baying of the black hounds was deafening now, barely thirty paces behind her. Mira spun around at the edge of a circular clearing surrounded by sheer limestone cliffs—a dead end known to local trappers as the Wolf's Trap.

Two colossal black mastiffs burst through the briars, their red eyes glowing in the moonlight, jaws slathered with foam, lunging directly for her throat.

Mira did not scream. Drawing her silver athame, she slashed the air before her, murmuring a rapid incantation. A concussive wave of silver elemental force blasted outward from her palm, striking the hounds in mid-air and tossing them ten yards back into the brambles, howling in stunned disorientation.

Before she could turn to climb the rock face, a thunderous crash shook the clearing.

A colossal black warhorse leapt over a six-foot granite boulder, landing with earth-shattering power directly between Mira and the escape path.

Astride the stallion was Prince Caelan.

In the moonlight, he looked less like a mortal man and more like an ancient god of war stepped down from the cathedral friezes. His dark hair was whipped by the wind, his grey eyes burning with an intense, predatory focus that pinned her to the spot. He dismounted smoothly, his long broadsword remaining sheathed at his hip, walking slowly toward her across the frost-crusted grass.

“Stay back!” Mira hissed, holding the silver athame in a two-handed defensive grip, her knuckles white with strain. “One step closer and I will cut you!”

Caelan paused five paces away, his gaze sweeping over her—her defiant amber eyes, the blood-stained sleeve of her left arm, the silver athame vibrating with raw magical power.

“You have already cut me, witch,” Caelan said softly, his deep voice carrying a strange, mesmerizing calm that sent shivers down her spine.

He raised his left hand, slowly unwrapping the linen bandage. In the pale moonlight, the three-inch laceration across his palm was clearly visible, raw, bleeding, and pulsing with the exact same silver light that glowed from Mira’s hand.

Mira stared in horror. Her grandmother's words crashed through her mind like an avalanche. *The prince who cannot die will feel every cut of your blade.*

“How is this possible?” Mira whispered, her voice trembling despite her effort to maintain composure. “I healed a common woodcutter. I never touched you. I have never seen your face in my life!”

“And yet, our blood beats in the same rhythm,” Caelan replied, taking another step forward. “Who are you? What did your coven do to my flesh?”

“I belong to no coven!” Mira cried out, lunging forward with her athame in a desperate bid to force him back.

She didn't aim to kill; she aimed to nick his shoulder to distract him so she could dive into the narrow crevice behind him.

Her silver blade slashed across Caelan’s right forearm, slicing cleanly through his leather tunic and scoring a shallow line across his skin.

At the exact same instant, an agonizing, burning slash ripped across Mira’s own right forearm.

Blood welled from both of their arms simultaneously. The shock was so profound that Mira dropped her athame, clutching her bleeding forearm with a cry of pain. Caelan gasped, stumbling forward a half-step as the shared trauma jolted through his immortal body.

Before she could recover, Caelan’s right hand shot out, gripping her left wrist to prevent her from reaching for another weapon.

The instant his bare skin touched hers, a catastrophic resonance exploded between them.

A blinding sphere of silver and midnight-violet light erupted outward, shattering the frost on the grass and blasting the approaching Inquisitor guards off their feet. In their minds, three hundred years of compressed memories, screams, vows, and burning temples collided in a kaleidoscopic whirlwind.

And through the blinding storm of shared consciousness, one truth burned into both their souls: whatever they were to each other, neither could live—or die—without the other.

As the concussive shockwave of their combined aura subsided, Mira lay on the frosted moss, looking up at Prince Caelan in the cold moonlight. Her entire body felt electric, every nerve ending tingling with a sensitivity that was almost unbearable. Through the grip he maintained on her wrist, she could feel his blood flowing through his veins—not the sluggish, mortal blood of a common man, but a roaring torrent of ancient, alchemical fire that had sustained him for three hundred winters.

Yet beneath that terrifying power lay an emptiness so profound that it made her throat ache with unexpected grief. She saw flashes of empty banquet halls where eighty courtiers bowed with false smiles while poisoning each other's wine; she saw fields of frozen mud where young men died shouting his name while he walked away without a scratch; she saw the cold, lonely towers of the Spires where no one dared speak his name without trembling.

Caelan looked down at her, his breathing ragged, his hand still clamped over her wrist. The icy detachment that had shielded his soul for centuries was entirely shattered. In her amber eyes, he saw not an enemy witch, but the living soul who had carried the silent weight of his existence while living in poverty in the woods.

"You are a Vesper," Caelan whispered, his deep voice thick with awe and confusion. "The house that gave me this life."

"My ancestors gave you a curse, Prince Caelan," Mira replied, her voice trembling but unbroken. "And now it has come home to claim us both."

Around them, the limestone cliffs stood silent under the stars, bearing witness to the moment the two halves of an ancient destiny collided.

As they stood frozen in the moonlit clearing, Caelan slowly released her wrist, though his intense grey eyes never left hers. The silence that fell over the limestone amphitheater was thick and suffocating, broken only by the distant dripping of water through the rock fissures and the ragged sound of their shared breathing.

Mira looked down at her right forearm, where the shallow cut mirrored the line on Caelan's skin. The blood had begun to coagulate into thin silver threads, sealing itself not with ordinary scab tissue, but with the shimmering, crystalline resonance of the Silver Weave.

"What did your people do to me?" Caelan asked, his deep baritone stripped of all royal pretense, revealing the raw, aching confusion of an immortal who had lived three centuries without understanding the source of his own life.

Mira pulled her cloak around her shivering shoulders, her amber eyes burning with fierce defiance. "My grandmother told me that House Vesper gave their blood to anchor an ancient spell, Prince Caelan. They were not trying to make you a god. They were trying to keep this continent from being consumed by alchemical fire. You were never meant to be immortal alone; you were meant to be bound to the earth. And when your family slaughtered my house, they broke the balance."

Before Caelan could reply, the thunder of clattering hooves and the harsh shouts of Inquisitor guards echoed through the narrow entrance of the canyon, shattering the fragile moment of truth between them.
