When a treacherous constitutional insurrection threatens to plunge the Mediterranean Principality of Monteverdi into civil war, iron-willed Crown Prince Nikolai von Monteverdi invokes an ancient, two-hundred-year-old feudal concordat to claim the hand of Lady Camilla Cavalcanti—the fiercely independent daughter of the realm's oldest noble house and a gifted concert cellist. Dragged from her coastal sanctuary in Portovenere to the jagged mountain citadel of the High Spires under threat of her family's ruin, Camilla vows to make the ruthless prince's life a living hell. But as court waltzes give way to sniper ambushes in the snow and poisoned chalices at state banquets, Camilla discovers the terrifying truth: Nikolai did not take her to cage her, but because the royal crown was the only shield that could grant her sovereign immunity from a traitor's daggers. Trapped in a high-stakes war for the throne, their bitter enmity explodes into an all-consuming, scorching bedroom passion that unites north and south, crowning their forbidden love in blood, silk, and eternal honor.

Chapter 1

The Sovereign Decree

The bells of the Cathedral of Saint Michael tolled ten slow, resonant chimes across the rain-swept harbor of Monteverdi.

From the high lancet windows of the Privy Council Chamber in the Palace of High Spires, the sovereign principality looked like a fortress carved from grey granite and storm-tossed sea. Below the palace cliffs, the Mediterranean churned in violent, slate-colored swells, crashing against the medieval sea wall that had defended the ruling House of von Monteverdi for seven hundred years.

Inside the vaulted council room, the air was thick with the scent of burning beeswax, damp wool, and the bitter, coppery reek of fear.

Seated along the thirty-foot table of bog oak were twelve members of the Council of State: venerable dukes, constitutional judges, and fleet admirals, each wearing the crimson silk sash of the Grand Cross. Every single one of them was staring at the man standing at the head of the table.

Crown Prince Nikolai von Monteverdi did not sit.

He stood with his booted feet planted shoulder-width apart, his gloved hands resting on the pommel of his ceremonial cavalry saber. At thirty-one years of age, the future sovereign possessed the broad, imposing physique of a soldier who had spent six years commanding border battalions in the rugged mountain passes of the Balkan frontier.
