Chapter 5
The First Leak of the Tour

By six-thirty the following morning, the tour bus was parked in the secure underground loading bay beneath the Moda Center in Portland, Oregon.
Inside the rear lounge of Bus One, the soft morning gloom was illuminated only by the faint glow of the audio interface on the workstation desk. Coffee cups sat empty beside crumpled manuscript paper covered in handwritten chord progressions and crossed-out lyrical lines.
Alex slept sitting up on the banquette, his head tilted back against the leather cushions, an acoustic guitar resting against his knees.
June sat at the console with a pair of professional studio headphones resting around her neck. On the digital audio workstation screen, a four-minute demo track titled *'Wire & Ash'* was rendered in intricate sonic waveforms.
For six hours through the rainy mountain pass between Seattle and Portland, they had written together with the feverish, telepathic intensity that had once defined their youth. Alex had poured out melodies of soaring, aching grief, while June had laid down acoustic bass lines, finger-picked guitar rhythms, and atmospheric synth pads that turned his pain into pure auditory gold.
It was the finest piece of music either of them had created in their lives.
A soft ping from June's smartphone shattered the peaceful morning silence.
June picked up the phone from the console desk. An alert from *Variety* and *PopCrave* flashed across the lock screen:
**[BREAKING: VAGRANT ECHOES TOUR ROCK BY NEW SCANDAL — AUDIO LEAK EXPOSES BEHIND-THE-SCENES TURMOIL]**
June's blood turned to ice.
With trembling fingers, she unlocked the screen and clicked the link.
Hosted on an anonymous audio-hosting platform was a two-minute, crystal-clear recording of her and Alex inside the private tour bus lounge from barely four hours ago.
The audio captured their raw, private conversation: Alex revealing Raymond's medical debt leverage, June confessing her ruined career, and the intimate rustle of their voices as Alex pleaded with her to stay.
Worse, accompanying the audio was a scathing tabloid commentary: *‘Sources confirm former indie flunk June Holloway has infiltrated Alex Vale's tour bus, emotionally manipulating the rockstar during his recovery in an attempt to hijack royalties for his upcoming album.’*
"No..." June gasped, her hand flying to her mouth as nausea surged through her chest. "Oh god, no..."
The soundproof door of the bus lounge was violently thrown open.
Raymond Cross stormed into the room, his face flushed crimson with fury, clutching a tablet displaying the trending Twitter hashtag: *#FireJuneHolloway*.
"What in the living hell is this?!" Raymond bellowed, his voice echoing off the walnut walls.
The shout jolted Alex awake. He straightened up, his hand instantly steadying the acoustic guitar as his hazel eyes darted between Raymond's furious glare and June's pale, trembling face.
"Raymond, what the fuck are you doing in my bus?" Alex growled, his voice deep with sleep and immediate hostility.
"Look at the news!" Raymond shoved the tablet into Alex's chest. "She's been on this tour for twelve hours and already private audio from your personal quarters is leaking to every blog on the internet! She's a parasite, Alex! Just like she was in Austin!"
Raymond turned on June, his eyes bulging with vicious venom.
"Pack your bags, Holloway. Security is escorting you off the tour premises this instant. You are terminated, your badge is revoked, and my legal team is filing a five-million-dollar breach of confidentiality lawsuit before noon!"
Raymond reached out to grab June's shoulder to force her toward the door.
Before his fingers could touch her fabric, Alex moved with terrifying, lightning-fast speed.
He caught Raymond's wrist in an iron grip, twisting the manager's arm behind his back and slamming him violently against the walnut wardrobe. The tablet went clattering across the floor, its glass screen shattering.
"Touch her again, Raymond, and I swear to god you leave this arena in an ambulance," Alex snarled into the manager's ear, his voice deadly, shaking with murderous rage.
"Alex... let go... you're under contract..." Raymond choked out, gasping in pain.
"Listen to me very carefully," Alex whispered, tightening his grip until Raymond winced. "June stays. She mixes tonight's show. She writes the record. And if one hair on her head is harmed, I walk out of the Moda Center, call a national press conference, and play every financial recording I have on your offshore shell companies."
Alex shoved Raymond toward the exit. "Get off my bus."
Raymond stumbled into the corridor, clutching his bruised wrist, his eyes burning with toxic vengeance before the outer door slammed shut.
In the heavy, ringing silence of the lounge, Alex turned to June, his chest heaving, his eyes burning with an unshakeable promise.
"They're trying to break us again, June," Alex whispered fiercely, pulling her into his arms as she trembled. "And this time, we're going to burn their house to the ground."
The aftermath of Raymond's confrontation left the tour bus vibrating with dangerous, combustible energy. After the manager was violently ejected into the rainy loading bay, Alex remained standing in the narrow corridor, his hands clenched into white-knuckled fists, his breathing heavy and jagged as he stared at the shattered pieces of Raymond's tablet on the floor.
June sank back onto the leather banquette, her face pale, her heart hammering frantically against her ribs. She stared at her phone screen where the defamatory tabloid headline continued to accumulate thousands of toxic comments and shares.
'He's going to destroy us, Alex,' June whispered, her voice trembling despite her best efforts to remain steady. 'The press already thinks I'm a manipulative ex trying to cash in on your tour. If Raymond goes to the media with a formal statement, every festival promoter and venue will demand I be removed from the crew.'
Alex walked over and knelt before her on the floor, taking both of her shaking hands into his large, warm palms. He looked up into her amber eyes with an expression of fierce, unshakeable certainty that instantly grounded her spinning thoughts.
'Raymond doesn't own this tour, June,' Alex said, his deep voice resonant and calm. 'The promoters don't sell eighteen thousand tickets a night because of Raymond Cross. They sell them because of the songs we write. If he tries to pull you off this bus, I cancel Portland, I cancel San Francisco, and I let the label lose twenty million dollars in arena breach penalties.'
June swallowed hard, looking into his determined face. 'You'd risk your entire career for me? After everything that happened?'
Alex brought her hands to his lips, pressing a slow, deliberate kiss to the center of her palms. 'I didn't fight through three years of hell just to let him steal you from me a second time, June. We write this album. We expose his leaks. And we take our music back.'
With the morning sunlight finally piercing through the rain clouds over Portland, June looked across the workstation desk at the digital audio waveforms of *'Wire & Ash'*. The leaked audio had ignited a public relations firestorm, but it had also drawn a clear battle line. The enemy was inside the house, lurking in the executive suites of Apex Music. Alex stood beside her, his hand resting firmly on the back of her chair as he dialed his legal counsel in New York. The war for their music and their truth had officially begun, and neither of them intended to surrender.
