Chapter 3
Blackout in the Tower
Hating the Heartthrob · Scarlett Hayes · 6 min read
By midnight, the storm outside had escalated into a full-blown gale. Howling winds rattled the stained glass, and thunder shook the stone walls of Langdell Hall.
Inside the study tower, papers were scattered across the mahogany table. Empty coffee cups and crumpled snack wrappers littered the floor. Despite the venom between them, their minds were an undeniable match. Rory was brilliant with constitutional doctrine and statutory dissection, while Jaxson was a master of oral rhetoric and jury persuasion. When they weren't arguing about semantics, their legal strategy was becoming an unstoppable juggernaut.
"Look at this clause," Jaxson said, leaning over Rory's shoulder to point at a paragraph on his laptop screen. "If we argue strict scrutiny under the Fourteenth Amendment instead of intermediate scrutiny under the Fourth, the appellate court has no room to maneuver."
Rory leaned in, studying the text. "It's aggressive. Risky."
"Aggressive wins cases, Red," he murmured, his shoulder brushing against hers.
Before Rory could retort, a blinding flash of lightning illuminated the stained glass, followed instantly by a deafening crack of thunder that seemed to strike the roof of the tower.
With a soft pop, the green banker's lamps flickered and died. The entire room was plunged into pitch-black darkness.
"Dammit," Rory gasped, her hand instinctively reaching out in the dark, her fingers colliding with Jaxson's warm, muscular chest.
She gasped and tried to pull back, but Jaxson's large hand shot out, capturing her wrist with firm, unyielding strength. In the sudden silence of the blackout, the sound of their breathing was loud and ragged.
"Careful, Callahan," Jaxson's deep voice rumbled in the darkness, inches from her face. "You might accidentally admit you enjoy touching me."
"In your dreams, Montgomery," Rory hissed, trying to wrench her wrist free, but his grip was like iron. "Let go of me so I can find my phone's flashlight."
"Why the rush?" he whispered, his tone dropping that mocking facade, turning husky, intimate, and dangerous. "Afraid of the dark, Red? Or afraid of being alone with me?"
"I'm not afraid of you," she said, her heart hammering against her ribs like a bass drum. "I'm disgusted by you."
Another flash of lightning tore through the sky, illuminating the room in brilliant, stark blue for two seconds. In that brief flash, Rory saw his face—his hazel eyes blazing with a raw, predatory hunger that took the air straight from her lungs.
He pulled her toward him. Rory gasped as her body collided with his hard chest. Jaxson backed her against the towering mahogany bookshelves, his free hand planting against the wood beside her ear, trapping her in his space.
"You've been looking at me all night, Rory," he murmured, his voice vibrating against her lips. "Every time I lean over this table, every time I argue with you... you look at me like you want to tear my clothes off just as much as you want to slit my throat."
"You're delusional—"
"Am I?"
Jaxson's fingers released her wrist and slid up to cup her jawline, his thumb stroking her burning cheek with unexpected, agonizing tenderness. "Then tell me to stop. Tell me you hate me, Rory. Tell me right now, and I swear I'll walk out that door."
Rory stared up into the shadows where his hazel eyes burned. The word *hate* was on the tip of her tongue, but her throat was parched. Four years of rivalry, four years of pent-up friction and covert glances, four years of fighting the undeniable, magnetic pull between them culminated in this pitch-black tower.
"I hate you, Jaxson Montgomery," she whispered, her voice trembling with breathless honesty. "I hate you so much it hurts."
"Good," Jaxson growled. "Because I've been losing my mind over you for four years."
His mouth crashed down on hers.
The kiss was an explosion. It wasn't gentle or hesitant; it was a collision of fire and steel. Jaxson's lips were hot, demanding, and possessive, parting her mouth with a low groan as his tongue swept inside, claiming her with savage desperation.
Rory whimpered against his mouth, her hands gripping the thick fabric of his hoodie, pulling him closer instead of pushing him away. A wave of liquid heat crashed through her lower belly, melting every rational defense she possessed. She met his hunger with her own, her fingers knotting into the soft hair at the nape of his neck, kissing him back with all the fierce, unbridled passion she had suppressed for years.
Jaxson groaned into her mouth, his hands dropping to her waist and lifting her effortlessly until she was sitting on the edge of the mahogany table. He stepped between her thighs, his hard erection pressing unmistakably against the apex of her legs through their clothes.
"Rory..." he panted against her jawline, his lips trailing hot, burning kisses down the sensitive curve of her throat, his teeth lightly grazing her collarbone. "You have no idea what you do to me."
"Jax..." she gasped, arching into his touch as his large, warm hands slid beneath her flannel shirt, his calloused palms searing her bare ribs.
For the first time in her life, Rory Callahan was completely powerless against a force greater than her own will.
The wind screamed against the stone gargoyles perched outside the lancet windows, throwing rain against the thick leaded glass like handfuls of gravel. Inside the dark study tower, the air was heavy with heat, the rich scent of leather bindings, and the raw, electric pulse of their colliding heartbeats.
Jaxson’s fingers were tangled in Rory's auburn hair, tilting her face up as his mouth devoured hers with bruising, insatiable hunger. His tongue tasted of dark coffee and sweet, forbidden heat, probing deep into her mouth, claiming every sigh and every whimper that tore from her chest.
Rory felt her knees weaken as his hard body pressed her firmly against the mahogany bookshelves. The sharp edges of leather-bound casebooks bit into her shoulder blades, but she hardly felt the sting; every nerve in her body was on fire, screaming with an overwhelming, desperate craving that had been building inside her for four years.
"Jax..." she moaned against his lips, her hands sliding beneath the hem of his athletic hoodie, her fingertips brushing across the taut, ridged muscles of his abdomen. His skin was scorching hot, corded with tension under her touch.
Jaxson groaned deep in his chest at the contact, his hips rocking forward instinctively, grinding his rigid, heavy bulge against the apex of her thighs through her denim jeans. The sensation was so intense that Rory gasped, her head falling back against the wood, exposing the long, slender curve of her neck.
"You have no idea how many nights I laid awake in my dorm room thinking about this, Rory," Jaxson rasped against her throat, his teeth lightly grazing her pulse point, sending shockwaves of pleasure straight down to her toes. "Watching you walk across the quad with your nose in a book... watching you smile at other guys... it was torture. You belong to me, Callahan. You always have."
Jaxson lifted her effortlessly across the alcove onto the edge of the massive mahogany table, scattering highlighters and legal briefs onto the floor. Outside, the storm reached its violent crescendo, lightning cracking across the black sky in jagged veins of silver fire. But inside the sanctuary of the tower, seated on the table with Jaxson's body between her thighs, Rory stopped fighting the truth she had denied for years. He wasn't just her rival; he was the other half of her soul, the only storm strong enough to match her own.
