Chapter 3

Velvet Chains

His Obsession, Her Destruction · Isla Montgomery · 5 min read

For five days, a strange, electric truce governed the life of Eagle's Crest Sanctuary.

Christian gave Evie the freedom of the estate—or as much freedom as four thousand acres of private wilderness and ten armed perimeter guards could afford. She spent her days in the private gallery, completely absorbed in the restoration of a fragmented second-century Roman marble bust of Apollo that Christian had acquired from an estate sale in Venice.

Working with delicate bone chisels, distilled solvents, and micro-fiber brushes, Evie lost herself in the rhythm of the stone. Yet no matter how deeply she focused on her work, she could feel Christian’s eyes on her.

He was never far away. He worked at a large drafting table in the corner of the gallery, reviewing private equity portfolios and military logistics contracts on his encrypted terminals. Whenever she looked up, she would find his glacial-blue gaze fixed upon her with that quiet, terrifying intensity that made the hair on her arms stand on end.

He didn't touch her; he didn't corner her. But the tension between them grew thicker with every passing hour, a taut wire pulled so tight it threatened to snap.

On the fifth evening, as twilight painted the snowy peaks in shades of indigo and violet, Evie was working on the base of the Apollo bust. The marble pedestal was heavy, weighing over eighty pounds, cracked along its southern seam.

She gripped the stone with both hands, trying to lift it onto the felt turntable.

"Careful, Genevieve," a deep, gravelly baritone rumbled directly behind her.

Before she could adjust her grip, two large, warm hands clamped over hers on the cold marble.

Christian stepped into her space, his massive six-foot-four frame pressing flush against her back. He wore a fitted black henley with the sleeves pushed up his corded, muscular forearms, and dark tactical trousers. The furnace-like heat radiating from his chest soaked right through her thin cotton shirt, making her breath hitch in her throat.

"Let me take the weight," Christian whispered against her ear, his deep voice sending shivers cascading straight down her spine.

With effortless, supernatural strength, his muscles flexed, lifting the eighty-pound marble block and shifting it smoothly onto the turntable. But he didn't step back.

He remained pressed against her, his broad chest trapping her against the edge of the workbench. His hands lingered over hers on the stone, his long, scarred fingers curling over her knuckles. The scent of him—fresh cedar, winter pine, and dark, masculine amber—flooded Evie’s senses, intoxicating and inescapable.

"You're working too hard, little bird," Christian rumbled, his lips brushing the shell of her ear as he spoke. "Your shoulders are knotted with tension."

"I am fine, Christian," Evie whispered, trying to maintain her composure, though her heart was hammering frantically against her ribs. "I want to finish the stabilization before the resin cures."

"The resin can wait," Christian growled softly.

Slowly, deliberately, Christian released her hands. But instead of retreating, his large, warm palms slid up her arms, resting on the tense curve of her shoulders. His thumbs pressed deep into the muscles at the base of her neck, working out the stiffness with firm, agonizingly pleasurable strokes.

Evie let out a soft, involuntary whimper, her head tilting back against his broad chest.

A low, guttural groan tore from Christian’s throat at the sound. His hands slid down to her waist, his fingers gripping her hips, turning her around in his arms until her back was pressed against the workbench and she was trapped between his muscular thighs.

His glacial-blue eyes burned down into hers with an intensity that stole the air from her lungs.

"You pretend you hate this cage, Genevieve," Christian rasped, his face inches from hers, his breath hot and ragged against her parted lips. "You pretend you want to run back to that cold city. But every time I touch you, your pulse races like a wildcat. Every time I look at you, your lips part."

Evie lifted her chin, her whiskey-colored eyes flashing with defiant pride, refusing to surrender completely to the magnetic pull of his dominance. "You stole my freedom, Christian. You expect me to thank you because your cage is made of gold and Caravaggios?"

A slow, devastating smirk curved Christian’s chiseled lips—a look filled with dark, unyielding arrogance.

"I don't want your gratitude, Genevieve," he murmured, his hand sliding up her ribcage, his thumb lightly grazing the side of her breast through the thin cotton. "I want your surrender."

He leaned down until his lips brushed against the corner of her mouth, teasing, tasting, torturing her with his proximity.

"Tomorrow, a blizzard is coming from the north," Christian whispered against her skin. "The temperature will drop twenty below zero. You will stay inside this house, where you are warm, where you are safe, where you are mine."

He stepped back, releasing her, leaving Evie trembling against the workbench in the quiet gallery, her skin burning where his hands had touched her, her mind consumed by the terrifying realization that she was falling under the spell of her captor.
After Christian left the gallery, the silence in the vast room was charged with the ghost of his presence.

Evie pressed her trembling hands against the edge of the workbench, her chest heaving as she tried to calm the wild, electric fluttering in her core. Her skin was still burning where his large hands had massaged her shoulders; her lips still tingled from the scorching heat of his breath.

She walked over to the floor-to-ceiling glass wall, watching the twilight shadows stretch across the snowdrifts outside. Down in the courtyard, she saw Christian walking through the falling flurries, bare-headed in the sub-zero chill, inspecting the perimeter defense posts with his head of security, Lucian.

Even from twenty feet above, his towering, powerful frame commanded absolute, instinctive obedience from the armed guards. He was a warlord of the modern world, a man who answered to no government and feared no enemy. Yet whenever he was in her presence, that terrifying, lethal dominance softened into an agonizing, starving tenderness that threatened to unravel her soul.

"He's a monster, Evie," she whispered to her reflection in the glass. "He's an obsessed stalker who locked you in a gilded cage."

But as her fingers touched her lips where his mouth had hovered, her inner voice betrayed her with a dangerous, traitorous whisper: *He's the only monster who ever protected you from the dark.*

She turned back to the workbench, picking up her bone chisel, knowing with terrifying clarity that the blizzard coming from the north was nothing compared to the storm gathering inside her heart.

She looked down at her hands, observing the fine white dust of ancient Roman marble clinging to her knuckles. For two years in Manhattan, she had felt like an outsider, a girl from Paris fighting against the shallow, predatory demands of high society. But in this mountain gallery, surrounded by treasures of antiquity and under the intense, protective gaze of Christian De Vries, she felt an inexplicable sense of belonging that she had never known. The fortress was cold and isolated, but the man inside was a fire that drew her closer with every breath.
