Chapter 3

The Alpha's Ultimatum

His Rogue Luna · Scarlett Black · 6 min read

Perched high upon the granite bluffs overlooking the mist-shrouded waters of Silvercreek Lake stood the Alpha's Lodge.

It was a magnificent fortress of rugged mountain architecture, constructed from hand-hewn cedar logs, polished river stone, and massive floor-to-ceiling glass windows that framed the snow-covered peaks of the Bitterroot Range. Inside, a colossal two-story fireplace carved from black river rock crackled with burning birch logs, casting deep amber warmth across polished timber floors covered in thick, luxurious wolf-fur rugs and handwoven tapestries depicting ancient pack victories.

Declan had escorted Nadia to the master guest suite on the second floor—a sunlit chamber featuring a massive carved birch bed draped in down comforters, a private bath with steaming mineral water, and a wardrobe stocked with soft wool tunics and clean linen trousers. Pack servants had brought up platters of roasted venison, warm crusty bread, and herbal tea.

Yet Nadia had barely touched the food. She could not rest.

She stood by the frost-rimmed window of the guest suite, watching the moon arc across the midnight sky. It was 2:30 in the morning. Four miles north, in the freezing shadows of the Black Pine caves, the children were waiting for her. With every passing hour, the cold deepened. If the lung-rot settled into little Toby's chest, all the penicillin in the world wouldn't be able to undo the damage.

Nadia made her decision.

She stripped off the soft linen robe the servants had laid out and pulled her battered combat leathers back on, fastening the buckles with silent, practiced efficiency. She retrieved her empty canvas pack from the chair, slipped out the heavy oak door of her bedchamber, and moved down the carpeted hallway like a shadow.

She knew the fortress layout from studying the exterior during her reconnaissance. The main entrance would be heavily guarded by Declan's elite sentinels, but the rear service stairs led down to a secluded stone terrace that opened onto the cliffside gardens. From there, a steep deer trail plunged into the dense hemlock forest bordering the gorge.

She descended the spiraling service stairs, her soft moccasins making no sound against the stone.

She reached the ground floor and crept into the darkened library, heading toward the French doors that opened out onto the snow-dusted terrace. Her hand reached for the cold brass handle, her heart pounding with a mixture of guilt and urgent determination.

Before she could push the glass door open, a large, heavy hand clamped over hers on the brass handle with the unyielding strength of an iron vise.

In one seamless, breathtaking movement, Nadia was spun around and pinned firmly against the heavy oak wall beside the door frame.

Declan towered over her in the darkness of the library.

He was bare-chested, wearing only low-slung charcoal lounge trousers that hung low on his muscular hips. His sculpted torso was a masterpiece of hardened muscle and pale silver battle scars, his broad chest radiating waves of furnace-like Alpha heat that chased the winter air from the room. His short dark hair was ruffled from sleep, but his steel-gray eyes burned with a mixture of raw fury, hurt, and terrifying, possessive intensity.

"Going somewhere, my rogue?" Declan growled into the darkness. His voice was dangerously low, vibrating through the oak paneling directly behind Nadia's head.

Nadia struggled against his grip, trying to twist her arm free, but Declan did not budge an inch. He shifted his weight, pressing his heavy muscular thighs against hers, trapping her securely between his towering frame and the solid wood wall.

"Let me go, Declan!" Nadia whispered fiercely, baring her teeth, her golden-amber eyes flashing with desperate urgency. "You don't understand! I can't stay here! People are dying in the mountains!"

"Then explain it to me!" Declan roared softly, his voice cracking like a whip across the silent library. He slammed his free palm flat against the timber wall beside her temple, the wood splintering slightly under the concussive force of his fist. "Stop treating me like an executioner, Nadia! For six hours, I have held back my beast, keeping my distance, treating you with the reverence of a fated mate while you look at me like I am a butcher! Who are you fighting for? Who are you willing to die for?"

The raw agony in his voice shattered the last remnants of Nadia's iron emotional control.

Five years of bone-deep exhaustion, five years of freezing alone in caves, five years of carrying the impossible burden of fifteen dying souls on her young shoulders broke through the dam. Hot, angry tears spilled over her dark eyelashes, streaming down her honey-tanned cheeks.

"I'm fighting for the children!" she sobbed out, her voice breaking into a ragged, agonized cry that echoed through the shadows. "The survivors of the Red Oak Pack! Garrett Stone massacred my pack when I was eighteen years old! The Ironwood bastards burned our village, slaughtered our warriors, and hunted my family like rabid dogs in the woods! I managed to escape with twelve orphaned pups and three wounded elders! I've been hiding them in the freezing caverns of Black Pine for five years, feeding them scraps, praying to the Moon that they survive the winter!"

She raised her fists and pounded them against Declan's bare, muscular chest, weeping with all the grief she had suppressed for half a decade.

"Three of the smallest pups have lung-rot!" she cried, her fists trembling against his skin. "Little Toby and Mia are burning with fever! If I don't bring that penicillin back tonight, they will drown in their own lungs before the sun rises! That's why I stole from you! Not for gold! Not for spite! For babies who have no one else in this cruel world! So kill me, Alpha! Slay the rogue who dared to steal your precious medicine! But for the love of the Moon Goddess, send someone to Black Pine with the vials before those children die!"

Declan stood frozen in place.

Every muscle in his six-foot-four body went dead still. His steel-gray eyes widened in profound, disbelieving shock, staring down at the weeping, trembling woman collapsed against his chest.

"Red Oak..." Declan whispered, his baritone cracking with an emotion so deep it sounded torn from his marrow. "The Red Oak massacre... your father was Alpha Jonathan Thorne."

Nadia squeezed her eyes shut, her tears soaking into the warm skin of his chest. "Yes. Jonathan Thorne was my father. I am Nadia Thorne, the lost heir of the pack Garrett Stone destroyed. Now execute me like your council demands, or let me save my family!"

Declan did not execute her.

With a low, guttural groan that sounded like a wounded beast, Declan reached down, scooped his massive arms beneath her thighs and back, and lifted her effortlessly off her feet. He pulled her flush against his chest, burying his face in the crook of her neck, inhaling her tears and her scent as a shuddering, violent breath racked his massive frame.

"Jonathan Thorne was my mentor, Nadia," Declan whispered fiercely into her russet curls, his voice trembling with reverent awe. "When my father was killed in the border wars and I was an untested boy of nineteen, Jonathan took me under his wing. He taught me how to lead. He taught me what it meant to protect the weak. When Garrett Stone burned Red Oak, I rode north with two hundred warriors to save your people, but we arrived too late. The valley was ashes. For five years, I believed Jonathan's entire bloodline had perished in the fire."

He set her down gently onto her feet, but kept his large, calloused hands cupped tenderly around her tear-streaked face. His thumbs brushed away the moisture on her cheeks, his gray eyes blazing with a lethal, terrifying promise of righteous war.

"Your father was the greatest Alpha this region ever knew," Declan swore, his voice ringing with absolute, unyielding conviction. "And his daughter will never beg for scraps in the dark again."

He turned toward the corridor and unleashed a concussive telepathic Alpha roar that summoned his second-in-command instantly.

Within seconds, the library doors flew open. Jax, Declan's six-foot-two Beta and top military commander, strode in, fully armed in tactical armor, his eyes scanning the room. "Alpha! What is the emergency?"

"Wake the first mobile medical unit," Declan commanded, his voice cold as steel. "Prepare two heated transport wagons, six draft horses, and four pack physicians. Load every vial of pediatric antivenom and winter rations in the vault. We ride for the Black Pine caverns immediately."

Jax blinked, glancing at Nadia with obvious confusion. "Alpha, Black Pine is rogue territory. The council—"

"The council will answer to my sword if they question my order," Declan cut in, his gray eyes blazing with absolute dominance. "We are bringing home the survivors of the Red Oak Pack. And the woman standing beside me is our Luna. Move!"
