He was the absolute Sovereign of Qadaar—a ruthless, Oxford-educated desert king who commanded high-tech armies and ancient Bedouin tribes with equal mastery. She was a brilliant Cambridge antiquities scholar and diplomat's daughter whose ruined father owed seventy-five million pounds to the royal treasury. Forced into an arranged marriage treaty to save her family from prison, Sophia Montgomery arrived at the white marble palaces of Qadaar prepared to fight for her independence. But between moonlit dunes, wild purebred Arabian stallions, and treacherous court conspiracies, the fierce, arrogant Sheikh who claimed her as his bride revealed a heart of unexpected nobility. As burning hatred dissolved into an all-consuming desert passion, Sophia found herself falling for the king who would burn the world to keep her safe.

Chapter 1

The Ambassador's Debt

The autumn rain swept in cold, relentless sheets across the gray stone facade of the Montgomery ancestral townhouse in Belgravia, London.

Inside the mahogany-paneled library, twenty-three-year-old Sophia Montgomery carefully cataloged a delicate fragment of fourth-century Nabataean pottery using a magnifying visor and fine camel-hair brushes. She was an antiquities scholar with first-class honors from Cambridge, specializing in ancient Arabian trade routes and prehistoric desert epigraphy. With her honey-blonde hair pinned into a practical chignon, her deep violet-blue eyes, and her aristocratic bone structure, she looked like an English rose who belonged among ancient parchment and marble statues.

Her peaceful academic sanctuary was shattered when the library double doors burst open.

Her father, Sir Edward Montgomery, stumbled into the room. A former British ambassador to the Persian Gulf, Edward had once been the epitome of diplomatic poise. Today, he looked like a broken, hollow ghost. His silk necktie was undone, his expensive tweed waistcoat disheveled, and his hands trembled violently as he gripped the edge of a mahogany bookcase to keep from collapsing.

"Father?" Sophia gasped, carefully setting her artifact down on a velvet tray and hurrying toward him. "What is it? What has happened?"

Edward sank into a leather wingback chair, burying his face in his trembling hands. A dry, shuddering sob tore from his chest.
