Chapter 1
Crosshairs in Monaco

The rain slicked the marble balustrades of the Casino de Monte-Carlo, reflecting the dazzling neon glare of high-roller supercars. Midnight in Monaco was a playground for billionaires, international spies, and lethal predators operating in the shadows.
Natasha Vance adjusted the earpiece hidden beneath her cascade of golden-auburn hair. She was perched on the roof terrace of the Hôtel de Paris across the plaza, dressed in a sleek black evening gown with a slit that revealed a suppressed Walter PPK strapped to her inner thigh. In her hands, she held a customized carbon-fiber precision surveillance scope, tracking the glass double doors of the private VIP salons.
"Target courier is moving toward the underground parking garage," her tactical spotter whispered in her ear. "Blue tuxedo, carrying the aluminum briefcase containing Reznov's biometric access codes. Move now, Aegis One."
Natasha slipped through the fire exit with fluid, predatory grace, descending the service stairs in near silence. Within sixty seconds, she dropped into the dim, subterranean parking level, her suppressed weapon drawn, moving between rows of Ferraris and Lamborghinis.
She had the courier in her sights fifteen feet away, stepping toward an armored Mercedes.
Her rifle scanner was locked onto the courier's wrist device, three seconds away from completing the biometric key download and dropping him with a tranquilizer dart, when a blur of dark motion exploded from behind a concrete pillar.
A massive, six-foot-three figure in a tailored charcoal combat suit intercepted the courier with brutal, terrifying efficiency. One swift palm strike to the courier's throat dropped the man instantly, the aluminum briefcase clattering across the epoxy floor.
Natasha’s silver-gray eyes narrowed in recognition, a jolt of pure venom surging through her veins.
Captain Alexander Cross.
Valkyrie Security's most lethal field commander, former British SAS, and the bane of Natasha’s professional existence for three years. Alec was a walking weapon—broad shoulders, scarred knuckles, dark hair touched with silver at the temples, and piercing green eyes that missed nothing.
Alec picked up the aluminum briefcase, turning slowly to face her as if he had known she was there all along.
"A little slow on the draw tonight, Vance," Alec drawled, his deep, gravelly British baritone echoing off the concrete walls. A mocking smirk curled his chiseled lips. "I thought Aegis trained their operatives to be quicker on their feet."
Natasha stepped out from the shadows, her Walther aimed dead-center at his chest. "Drop the briefcase, Cross. You're interfering with an active Aegis black-ops recovery."
Alec didn't flinch. He casually swung the case behind his back, taking a slow, deliberate step toward her, his green eyes burning with that familiar, infuriating arrogance.
"Valkyrie had this courier wired since Zurich, sweetheart," he murmured, his gaze sweeping over her black gown, lingering on the exposed curve of her collarbone. "Nice dress, by the way. A bit flashy for a sniper, but it certainly flatters the assets."
"Shut your mouth and put the case on the ground," Natasha hissed, her finger tightening on the trigger. "Or I'll put a nine-millimeter hollow-point through your shoulder."
Alec’s smirk turned into a lethal grin. "You've been threatening to shoot me for three years, Natasha. Yet every time you have me in your crosshairs... you hesitate."
In the blink of an eye, Alec lunged.
Natasha fired, but Alec had already anticipated the trajectory, his left hand sweeping her wrist upward as the suppressed round chipped the concrete ceiling. He stepped into her guard, twisting her arm with bone-cracking speed, disarming her.
Natasha didn't panic. She drove her elbow back into his ribs with enough force to crack stone, followed by a sweeping roundhouse kick that grazed his jaw. Alec grunted, staggering back half a step, wiping a smear of blood from his lip, his green eyes flashing with feral delight.
"God, you hit like a freight train," he chuckled, lunging again.
They traded three lightning-fast blows—Natasha using her agile Krav Maga strikes, Alec leveraging his raw SAS power. The fight was brutally close, their bodies colliding with bruising force until Alec swept her legs out from under her, pinning her against the hood of a sleek silver Aston Martin.
He leaned down over her, his massive chest heaving against her breasts, his thighs locking hers in place, his large, calloused hand gripping both of her wrists above her head against the warm metal hood.
The scent of him flooded her senses—gunpowder, expensive bergamot, and the intoxicating, raw musk of pure adrenaline. His face was two inches from hers, his ragged breath hot against her parted lips.
"Yield, Natasha," Alec whispered, his voice thick and husky, his green eyes dilated with a dark, dangerous hunger that had nothing to do with combat.
"Go to hell, Cross," she panted, her chest heaving against his hard pectorals, her silver eyes blazing with defiant fury.
Before either of them could move, the harsh screech of automated alarms tore through the garage, and both of their encrypted comms crackled simultaneously.
"All field operatives stand down!" the voice of the Joint Intelligence Directorate boomed in their ears. "Reznov’s courier was a decoy! A dirty radiological warhead has entered the French Riviera. Aegis One and Valkyrie Lead... you are ordered to immediately combine forces. Failure to comply will be treated as treason."
Natasha stared up at Alec in horror.
Alec looked down at her, a slow, wicked smile spreading across his sculpted features.
"Well, well, darling," Alec rumbled, his grip on her wrists loosening into a gentle, lingering caress against her skin. "Looks like we're playing on the same team now."
The emergency alarms continued to blare through the subterranean garage, casting flashing amber reflections across the polished concrete walls and luxury supercars.
Natasha didn't immediately pull away. Pinned beneath Alec's massive, muscular frame, she could feel the violent, rhythmic pounding of his heart against her chest—a thunderous beat that matched her own. His breath was hot on her cheek, carrying the faint tang of blood from his split lip and the intoxicating scent of cedar and gunpowder that had haunted her dreams in safehouses across the globe.
"You really think this changes anything, Cross?" she whispered, her voice husky and uneven as she forced her silver-gray eyes to meet his piercing green gaze. "Just because the Directorate issued a joint mandate doesn't mean I trust you. The moment Reznov's warhead is disarmed, you're back in my crosshairs."
Alec chuckled, a low, rumbling sound that vibrated deep in his broad chest. His hand slowly released her wrists, his calloused fingers trailing down the bare curve of her arms with agonizing, deliberate slowness before resting gently against her waist.
"Fair enough, Vance," Alec murmured, his lips brushing a fraction of an inch from hers. "You can put me in your crosshairs all you want. As long as you remember who had you pinned to the hood of an Aston Martin in Monaco."
He pushed himself up with effortless athletic grace, extending a hand down to her. Natasha stared at his open palm for a second, fighting the electric heat buzzing in her blood, before slapping his hand aside and getting to her feet on her own.
"Let's get out of here, Cross," she snapped, brushing off her black silk gown, though the high flush on her cheeks gave away the turmoil inside her. "Before the local police arrive and complicate our little partnership."
