Chapter 1

The Obsidian Mask

One Night with My Ruthless CEO · Julian Vance & Dante King · 8 min read

The heavy velvet curtain parted, releasing the heavy aroma of crushed amber, vintage bourbon, and dark patchouli. Beyond the threshold lay The Sanctum—Manhattan’s most secretive and depraved playground for the ultra-wealthy.

Clara Hastings stepped onto the black lacquer floor, her heart thudding against her ribs like a trapped bird. Sixty stories below on 57th Street, normal citizens walked through the autumn rain, completely oblivious that above them, billionaires, politicians, and foreign dignitaries shed their public reputations under the cover of hand-carved venetian masks.

Clara adjusted the silver filigree mask concealing the upper half of her face. Her hazel eyes darted across the dim, candle-lit lounge. Women in couture gowns of silk and velvet mingled with men in bespoke tuxedos. No real names were exchanged. No phones or recording devices were permitted past the biometric titanium airlocks at the private elevator. The Sanctum’s single rule was absolute: complete anonymity, complete indulgence.

Clara had not spent two months tracking the club’s clandestine membership roster for pleasure. She was here on a mission of survival and vengeance.

Eighteen months ago, her father’s boutique private-equity firm, Hastings & Co., had been ruthlessly dismantled in a coordinated hostile takeover, driving her father into a fatal stroke. The official paper trail led to a cluster of anonymous Cayman shell corporations. But three days ago, while conducting a forensic financial audit, Clara discovered a microscopic recurring transaction linked directly to the private accounts of The Sanctum.

One of the men who had destroyed her family was inside this club tonight.

Clara walked toward the private bar, her black silk slip dress whispering against her thighs with every step. The dress was a weapon in itself—backless down to the swell of her hips, featuring a plunging sweetheart neckline and a scandalous slit along her left leg that showcased the curve of her thigh. She caught her reflection in the smoked-glass mirror: tall, slender, with auburn hair cascading in loose waves over her bare shoulders, and lips painted a bold, defiant crimson.

She ordered a dry martini, taking a slow sip to calm the tremor in her hands.

"Alone in the den of wolves, little siren?"

The voice came from behind her right shoulder. It was deep, low-timbered, and dripping with an effortless, predatory authority that made every hair on the back of Clara’s neck stand at attention.

Clara turned slowly, glass in hand.

Standing before her was a man who commanded the very air around him. He was tall—easily six-foot-two—with broad shoulders encased in a flawless midnight-navy tuxedo with satin peak lapels. He wore an obsidian mask sculpted in the likeness of a predatory falcon, sharp cheekbones visible beneath the polished black surface. A faint shadow of stubble dusted his strong, square jaw, and through the mask's eye slits, two ice-blue eyes bore into her with such penetrating intensity that Clara felt completely stripped bare.

He was neither young nor old; perhaps thirty-one or thirty-two, exuding the calm, dangerous certainty of a king who had never once been told 'no' in his entire life.

"I don't recall asking for a companion," Clara said coolly, keeping her voice even despite the sudden spike in her pulse.

A slow, wicked smile touched the corners of the man's sculpted mouth. "In The Sanctum, siren, a woman standing alone at the center of the room is not avoiding attention. She is demanding it."

He stepped closer, invading her personal space with deliberate arrogance. The scent of him washed over her—smoky cedarwood, expensive tobacco, and a crisp, clean citrus note that smelled distinctly of untamed wealth and raw testosterone. The sheer masculinity radiating off him was suffocatingly hot.

"Is that your usual pick-up line?" Clara countered, lifting her chin to meet his icy gaze. "Arrogant, overbearing, and hopelessly predictable."

Instead of taking offense, the man let out a low, resonant chuckle that vibrated straight through Clara’s chest.

"Predictable?" he murmured, leaning down so his mouth hovered barely an inch from the shell of her ear. His warm breath sent a shiver racing across her bare collarbone. "There is nothing predictable about what I want to do to you, little bird."

Clara’s breath hitched. She should have turned and walked away. Her rational mind screamed that she was here to find financial records, not flirt with an anonymous aristocrat. But the electric tension vibrating between them was hypnotic, a magnetic undertow that rendered her feet rooted to the floor.

"You don't even know my name," she whispered, her voice betraying a hint of breathlessness.

"Names are trivial," the man said softly. His hand reached out, his long, warm fingers brushing lightly against the bare skin of her shoulder.

The touch was electric. Clara gasped quietly, a sharp jolt of heat shooting straight down to the pit of her stomach. His calloused fingertips traced a slow, agonizing path down the slope of her bare arm, coming to rest at the curve of her waist. His grip tightened just enough to pull her half an inch closer, until the fabric of her silk dress brushed against the heavy wool of his tuxedo trousers.

"Tonight, you are whatever you desire to be," he whispered against her temple. "And I am the man who will give it to you."

Before Clara could formulate a witty retort, he took her empty martini glass, set it on a passing waiter’s silver tray, and took her hand in his. His grip was firm, warm, and utterly unyielding.

He led her away from the crowded lounge toward the private VIP alcoves lining the back corridor. Heavy velvet draperies separated each booth from the main floor, creating soundproofed sanctuaries bathed in crimson candlelight.

He drew her inside Alcove Seven. The curtain fell shut behind them, cutting off the low hum of the lounge and leaving them in charged, intimate silence.

The alcove was dominated by a plush chesterfield sofa of deep crimson velvet. On a low marble table, a single crystal decanter of vintage cognac caught the amber flame of a candle.

Clara turned to face him, her back against the padded velvet wall. "What makes you think I agreed to come in here with you?"

The man didn't answer with words. He took two slow, measured strides, cornering her against the velvet. He raised both hands, placing them on the wall on either side of her head, caging her within the fortress of his body.

The proximity was overwhelming. Clara could feel the heat radiating from his chest, could see the pulse beating steadily at the hollow of his tanned throat above his silk bowtie.

"Your lips say one thing, little siren," he whispered, his voice dropping into a raspy, gravelly register that made her knees feel weak. "But your pulse is galloping against your throat. And your eyes have been begging me to touch you since the moment you looked at me."

"You're terribly full of yourself," Clara breathed, though she didn't step aside. Her gaze dropped involuntarily to his lips—full, firm, and undeniably sensual.

"Let's see how much you hate it," he murmured.

He didn't give her a chance to reply. He leaned down, his mouth capturing hers with devastating precision.

A soft, muffled gasp tore from Clara’s lips, and he took ruthless advantage, deepening the kiss instantly. His tongue parted her lips, sliding against hers in a slow, commanding rhythm that tasted of vintage cognac and dark sin. It was not a gentle, polite kiss; it was an absolute conquest, possessive and scorching hot.

Clara’s mind splintered. Every rational thought, every memory of her father’s audit, every ounce of self-preservation vanished into the white-hot furnace of sensation. Her hands, which had been raised to push him away, instead curled into the lapels of his tuxedo jacket, clutching the rich satin as she arched into him.

A guttural sound of approval rumbled in his chest. His hands left the wall, his arms sliding around her waist, lifting her until her feet barely touched the floor. He pressed her firmly against his hips, and through the thin silk of her slip dress, Clara felt the rigid, heavy length of his arousal pressing against her lower belly.

The sensation sent a shockwave of liquid heat pooling between her thighs. She whimpered into his mouth, her hips instinctively rolling against him, seeking friction.

"God, you are responsive," he growled against her lips, breaking the kiss only to drag his mouth down the sensitive line of her throat. His teeth grazed the tendon above her collarbone, a sharp nip of possession that made Clara gasped, before soothing the sting with a slow, wet lick of his tongue.

His large, warm hand slid down the curve of her hip, finding the high slit of her dress. His fingers brushed against the bare skin of her upper thigh, rising higher, tracing the lace band of her sheer black thigh-high stockings.

Clara shuddered violently as his fingertips touched the burning heat of her bare skin just beneath the silk hem.

"Wait..." she gasped, her hands tangling in his dark hair as his lips returned to her mouth, kissing her with renewed savagery. "We can't... not here..."

"No one is coming in here," he growled into her mouth.

His fingers slipped beneath the gusset of her lace panties, finding the swollen, scalding core of her cleft. When his fingers stroked through her slick, wet folds, Clara let out a breathless, broken cry against his jaw.

"So wet for a stranger," he whispered darkly, his thumb circling her swollen clitoris with agonizing expertise. "You like being touched by a man who takes what he wants, don't you?"

"Please..." Clara choked out, her head falling back against the velvet cushion. She didn't know what she was begging for—relief, more pressure, or total ruin. Her hips rolled frantically against his hand, chasing the rhythm he was dictating.

"Look at me," he commanded.

Clara forced her heavy, lust-clouded eyes open, gazing into the ice-blue stare burning behind the obsidian mask.

He stroked her faster, his fingers driving into her slick heat with deliberate, wicked friction. Every stroke sent lightning arcing up her spine, tightening her core into a coiled spring on the verge of snapping.

"Come for me, little siren," he ordered softly, his voice thick with gravelly need. "Show me how sweet you are."

The command was the final catalyst. Clara’s inner walls clamped down in a violent, toe-curling spasm of pure, incandescent release. She cried out, her nails digging into his shoulders, her back arching off the velvet as wave after wave of shuddering pleasure ripped through her core, leaving her trembling and breathless in his arms.

He held her through the aftershocks, kissing her forehead and the corner of her lips with a surprising, quiet tenderness that made her chest ache.

When her breathing finally slowed, he slowly withdrew his hand, using a linen handkerchief from his pocket to wipe his fingers with calm, aristocratic elegance.

He looked down at her flushed face, her swollen lips, and her dilated hazel eyes. A slow, knowing smile touched his mouth.

"A magnificent start," he murmured, stepping back and straightening his tuxedo jacket.

Before Clara could gather her scattered wits or demand his name, he reached into his pocket and placed a silver token stamped with a falcon crest onto the table beside her clutch.

"Until next time, siren," he whispered.

With a slight, mocking bow, he turned and parted the velvet curtain, disappearing into the shadows of the club and leaving Clara alone in the dim alcove, shivering with an unquenchable fire she knew would haunt her forever.
