Chapter 1

The Masquerade

One Night with the CEO · Elena Rossi · 7 min read

The Venetian Charity Gala at Manhattan’s Grand Plaza Hotel was the sort of affair where champagne flowed like liquid diamonds and every smile was insured for half a million dollars.

Elena Vance did not belong here, and she felt the disparity down to the soles of her borrowed four-inch silver stilettos.

She stood near the towering Corinthian pillars at the periphery of the grand ballroom, carefully balancing a flute of Laurent-Perrier. Her floor-length emerald slip dress—borrowed from her roommate Maya, who worked in showroom PR—clung to every curve of her body like liquid jade. It had a daring open back that dipped all the way to the swell of her lower spine, held together by gossamer-thin straps. Over her eyes, she wore a delicate black filigree mask, its lacquered edges curving upward like the wings of a night raven.

"Stop hovering by the cheese platter like a fugitive, Elena," her best friend Liam muttered beside her, tugging at the collar of his rental tuxedo. "You look like a million bucks. Literally. Cross Media paid ten grand for this corporate table. Eat the caviar, drink the champagne, and for God’s sake, pretend you don’t have twenty unfinished pitch decks waiting on your desktop."

Elena took a slow sip of the sparkling wine, letting the cold effervescence settle her fluttering nerves. "I stayed until nine o’clock last night formatting the Q3 regional projections, Liam. If the board doesn’t approve my digital campaign by Friday, our entire junior team is on the chopping block."

"The old chairman is eighty-two years old and half-blind. He wouldn't know a digital campaign from a microwave manual," Liam replied dismissively, snatching a bacon-wrapped scallop from a passing waiter's silver tray. "Besides, rumors are flying across the executive floors. Word is, the old man is stepping down this week. His nephew from London is taking over the conglomerate."

"The corporate raider?" Elena arched an eyebrow behind her mask. "The one the financial press calls the 'London Reaper'?"

"The very same," Liam whispered, leaning closer. "They say he bought three shipping lines before he turned twenty-eight, dismantled an entire private equity cartel in Frankfurt, and never sleeps more than four hours a night. A complete psychopath. Gorgeous, obscenely wealthy, and completely merciless. So enjoy tonight, sweetie, because starting Monday, we’re probably all going to be working in a corporate gulag."

Elena laughed softly, but before she could reply, the atmosphere in the cavernous ballroom shifted.

It wasn't a sudden noise; in fact, the opposite happened. The ambient hum of laughter, clinking crystal, and string quartets seemed to dampen, as if someone had turned down the volume on the world.

Elena felt a strange, electric static prickle against the bare skin of her back. Her breath caught in her throat before her brain even registered why. Instinctively, drawn by an irresistible gravitational pull, she turned her gaze toward the double grand staircase leading down into the ballroom.

A man was descending the marble steps.

He was tall—at least six-foot-two—with broad, athletic shoulders that filled out a custom bespoke black tuxedo with effortless grace. His presence commanded the entire room without uttering a single syllable. People stepped aside as he moved, parting like water before a warship.

His face was partially concealed by an obsidian-and-silver mask, sharp and aristocratic, but it did nothing to hide the carved lines of his square jaw, dusted with dark evening shadow, or the sculpted fullness of his lips. But it was his eyes that froze Elena where she stood.

They were smoke-gray. Piercing, predatory, and burning with an intensity so fierce it felt like a physical touch across the fifty feet of polished parquet floor separating them.

And they were locked directly onto her.

Elena forgot how to breathe. The stem of her champagne flute trembled between her fingers. Around her, women in couture gowns were turning their heads, whispering behind diamond-encrusted fans, angling for his attention. He didn't spare a single one of them a glance. His focus remained laser-locked on Elena in her emerald dress, cutting through the swirling crowd of aristocrats, politicians, and socialites as if they were made of glass.

"Holy shit," Liam breathed beside her, his scallop forgotten. "Who is that?"

"I don't know," Elena whispered, her heart kicking against her ribs with the violent rhythm of a trapped bird.

The stranger was walking toward them. His stride was slow, deliberate, and undeniably predatory. With every step he took, the air grew thicker, heavier, saturated with the intoxicating scent of expensive cedarwood, rich aged bourbon, and crisp autumn night air.

Liam took a sudden step backward. "Elena, he's looking at you like he wants to eat you alive."

Before Elena could muster a witty retort or turn away to save her sanity, the man reached her. He came to a halt barely two feet away, towering over her, his broad chest casting a shadow that swallowed her whole.

Up close, the sheer raw masculinity radiating from him was dizzying. Elena had to tilt her head back to look into those molten silver eyes.

"You look like a temptation I have no intention of resisting tonight," the man said. His voice was a deep, gravelly baritone that vibrated right through the center of Elena's chest, leaving a trail of liquid fire in its wake.

Elena swallowed the lump in her throat, summoning every scrap of her pride to keep her voice steady. "Most men introduce themselves before they make declarations like that."

A faint, wicked smirk curved his sculpted lips. "Names belong to the daylight, little emerald. They come with baggage, expectations, and rules. Tonight isn't about rules. Tonight is about desire."

"And what if I have rules?" she challenged, though her pulse was hammering so loud she feared he could hear it.

"Then I will take great pleasure in watching you break every single one of them," he murmuring, stepping closer until the heat radiating from his wool jacket warmed her bare shoulders. He extended a broad hand, fingers long, powerful, and immaculate. "Dance with me."

It wasn't a request. It was an imperial command wrapped in velvet and silk.

Liam shot her a wide-eyed, panicked glance from the side, but Elena was already powerless to look away. Her fingers moved as if guided by an invisible wire, sliding into his warm, firm palm.

The instant their skin touched, a jolt of pure voltage surged up Elena's arm, sparking behind her eyelids. She gasped softly. His fingers closed around hers with unyielding strength, pulling her forward into his space.

The orchestra transitioned into a slow, haunting tango-waltz. He led her directly onto the center of the polished marble dance floor.

His right hand splayed wide against the small of her bare back. The heat of his skin against her naked skin was scorching, burning straight through the open cut of her silk gown. Elena instinctively placed her free hand against his chest. Beneath the crisp cotton of his pleated shirt, his heart was beating with a heavy, steady, powerful thrum.

He moved with devastating, feline grace. With every turn, every dip, their bodies pressed flush together. Elena’s senses were completely flooded. Her head spun with the scent of his cologne, the firm press of his muscular chest, and the electric friction of his thighs brushing against hers through the sheer emerald silk.

"You're breathing fast, little emerald," he whispered against her ear, his lips brushing the sensitive hollow beneath her earlobe. A violent shiver rippled down her spine.

"You're crowding me," she breathed, arching her back slightly as he guided her through a seamless turn, though her body leaned shamelessly into his warmth.

"I haven't even begun to crowd you," he replied, his voice dropping an octave lower, husky with undisguised lust. His hand slid lower down her spine, his fingers resting firmly on the swell of her hip, pulling her hard against him.

Elena felt the hard, unmistakable ridge of his arousal pressing against her lower belly. A bolt of raw, liquid heat pooled between her thighs. He wanted her. Here, in the middle of a crowded society gala, surrounded by three hundred of the city’s most influential elites.

"Who are you?" she gasped against his lapel, dazed by the sheer ferocity of the chemistry consuming them.

"Tonight, I'm the man who is going to make you forget your own name," he murmured, his thumb stroking the bare curve of her waist. "Come with me to the penthouse suite upstairs. No names. No tomorrows. Just this."

Every logical, responsible instinct Elena possessed told her to pull back, to smile politely, make an excuse about the ladies' room, and take an Uber home to her safe, predictable life. She had a job. She had deadlines. She had boundaries she had spent years building around her guarded heart.

But as she looked up into those storm-gray eyes, burning with raw hunger and an undeniable, magnetic promise, every boundary she owned turned to ash.

"Yes," Elena whispered, her voice trembling with reckless surrender. "Take me."
