Chapter 4

The Rain on 57th Street

Tamed by the Ruthless Mogul · Serena Sterling · 3 min read

Elena could feel the hot puff of Julian's breath against the sensitive curve of her throat. Her heart was hammering violently, but she clamped down on her panic with iron resolve. If she broke now, she lost everything.

"Call them," Elena whispered, turning her face to look directly into his dark, brooding eyes. "Call your security team, Mr. Montgomery. Have them search me. You'll find the port expansion covenants and your own contradictory debt schedules. If you think I'm an industrial spy from Vance Holdings, you're not half as smart as Wall Street thinks you are."

Julian didn't move. His obsidian eyes narrowed, searching every contour of her face with ruthless precision. His gaze tracked the rapid pulse fluttering at the hollow of her throat, the defiance burning in her hazel eyes, the proud, unyielding tilt of her chin.

"You despise Carter Vance," Julian stated. It wasn't a question; it was an absolute deduction. "Every time his name is mentioned on this floor, your pupils contract and your jaw tightens by two millimeters. You didn't come here to steal trade secrets for Vance."

"Then what did I come here for?" she challenged, her voice husky.

Julian tilted his head, his hand leaving the desk and rising slowly. His long, calloused index finger lightly traced the line of her jawline, from her ear down to the point of her chin. The touch was scorching—a jolt of raw electricity that made her gasp softly and arch into his touch despite herself.

"You came for me," Julian whispered, his thumb resting gently on the fullness of her bottom lip. "You came because you believe I hold the key to whatever broke your world. And you're playing a very dangerous game with a monster who doesn't believe in mercy."

Elena’s lips trembled beneath his thumb, but her gaze didn't waver. "Are you a monster, Julian?"

A dark, bitter smile curled his lips at her use of his first name. "Ask the men who used to sit on this board before I liquidated their careers. Ask the people who tried to betray me."

He stepped back, breaking the suffocating physical contact. Elena felt an instant, shocking chill where his heat had been.

Julian tossed the hardware decipher onto his desk. "Get your coat."

Elena blinked, thrown off balance by the sudden shift. "What?"

"It's ten o'clock. There's a nor'easter battering Midtown, and you're not staying in this office another minute," Julian said, slipping his tailored overcoat over his broad shoulders. "You're coming with me."

"I have my own apartment in the Village—"

"I don't care," Julian cut in, his baritone leaving zero room for argument. "Until I determine whether you are an asset or a liability, Elena Cruz, you don't leave my sight. Move."

Five minutes later, they were descending in the private express elevator to the underground executive garage. A chauffeur held open the rear door of Julian's armored black Mercedes-Maybach.

As the luxury sedan glided out into the torrential rain of 57th Street, sheets of water cascaded against the tinted windows. Inside, the leather interior was quiet, warm, and suffused with the scent of Julian’s cologne.

Julian sat beside her, staring straight ahead into the storm. But his hand rested on the leather seat between them, mere centimeters from hers. Elena looked at his broad, scarred knuckles, feeling an intoxicating mixture of terror and forbidden longing. She had set out to trap the wolf in his own lair, but sitting in the dark beside him, she realized with terrifying certainty that the cage door had already clicked shut behind her.

The Maybach cruised smoothly through the rain-slicked canyons of Manhattan, wipers rhythmically sweeping across the windshield. Elena turned her head slightly to study Julian's profile in the ambient amber glow of the streetlights. His features were carved with severe, aristocratic precision: high cheekbones, a straight, noble nose, and a jawline that looked capable of cutting glass. But there was a deep weariness in the lines around his eyes—a shadow of ancient battles and solitary vigilance that no fortune could erase.

"Where are we going, Julian?" Elena asked softly, breaking the heavy silence that enveloped the luxury cabin.

Julian did not turn his head immediately. His dark eyes remained fixed on the dancing red taillights ahead. "To a place where walls don't have ears, Elena. You spent the day hunting for the truth about Cruz Marine. Tonight, you're going to get it."

Elena's breath hitched in her chest. The mention of her family's name struck her like a lightning bolt in the quiet car. She pressed her back against the leather seat, her knuckles whitening around her handbag, realizing that Julian Montgomery was always three moves ahead on a chessboard she was only beginning to understand.
