Chapter 3

Claws and Curfew

The Alpha's Forbidden Mate · Cora Vance · 5 min read

By the following afternoon, Maya had begun to realize that the Blackwood Pack was not a mindless pack of monsters, but a sophisticated, ancient civilization hidden within the primeval forests of Washington.

From the cedar deck of the Obsidian Lodge, she watched the village below. Over six hundred werewolves lived in stone-and-timber cabins along the riverbank, practicing sustainable agriculture, weaving, and metalwork. Children with wolf-tail charms ran through the meadows, shifting into playful wolf pups under the warm autumn sun, while warrior patrols guarded the mountain ridges with silent, disciplined vigilance.

Yet everywhere Maya walked under Lucian’s escort, the atmosphere grew tense as stretched bowstrings.

Traditionalist pack members stared at her with open hostility and fear. To them, a human girl was a walking contagion—a fragile liability that would weaken their Alpha and invite federal intrusion into their sacred sanctuary.

"Don't let their scowls frighten you, Miss Lin," a cheerful voice spoke from the herb garden beside the lodge.

Maya turned to see Caleb Thorne, Lucian’s twenty-four-year-old younger brother and head scout. Caleb had the same dark hair and athletic build as Lucian, but his eyes were a warm hazel, and his easygoing smile carried none of Lucian’s brooding intensity. He was harvesting bundles of wild yarrow and mountain sage into a woven basket.

"Caleb, right?" Maya smiled faintly, stepping toward the raised garden beds.

"The one and only," Caleb laughed, dusting soil from his hands. "My brother acts like an angry thundercloud ninety percent of the time, but don't be fooled. He hasn't left the perimeter of this lodge since he brought you home. He personally threatened to break the legs of any guard who stared at you with disrespect."

Maya looked down at the yarrow plants. "Why do they hate humans so much, Caleb?"

Caleb’s smile faded, replaced by quiet sorrow. "Seventy years ago, timber barons and corrupt state officials tried to clear-cut these valleys. They poisoned our water with strychnine, killed our women, and hunted our ancestors with silver-tipped rifles. Elder Dominic—the head of our traditionalist council—lost his entire family in that purge. He believes that mixing wolf blood with human weakness is an unforgivable betrayal of our ancestors."

Caleb leaned in, his voice dropping to an urgent whisper: "Watch your back around Dominic, Maya. He has twenty loyal enforcers who answer only to him. He won't let Lucian claim a human without a fight."

Before Maya could reply, the heavy timber door of the lodge swung open. Lucian stepped out onto the deck, his massive frame radiating cold authority as his golden eyes found Maya.

That night, as another coastal gale rattled the heavy cedar beams of the lodge, Maya couldn't sleep. Wrapped in an oversized wool cardigan and flannel trousers, she crept down the dark hallway into Lucian’s private library. The room was illuminated only by the dying embers of the hearth and the silver glow of the moon through the glass wall.

She ran her fingers along the antique leather book spines, pausing before a framed charcoal sketch of an ancient coastal ritual. The drawing depicted a circle of wolves bowing before a female figure wearing an emerald-leaf pendant—the exact twin of the necklace her grandmother had given her.

"Studying our history, little botanist?"

The deep, rumbling baritone emerged from the leather armchair by the fire.

Maya spun around, her heart leaping into her throat. Lucian sat in the shadows, holding a glass of amber whiskey, wearing only dark trousers, his bare chest glowing golden in the firelight.

"This drawing..." Maya whispered, pointing to the sketch. "The pendant the woman is wearing. It's identical to the one my grandmother gave me before she died."

Lucian set his glass on the table and stood up. He walked toward her with slow, predatory grace, closing the distance until his towering presence swallowed the room.

"Your grandmother's pendant is the Seal of the Moon Priests, Maya," Lucian rumbled, his voice thick with wonder and raw hunger. "A thousand years ago, human priestesses walked these forests, using botanical magic to heal our wounded and bless our full moon rites. They were the sacred bridge between humans and wolves."

He stopped bare inches from her. The scent of dark cedar, crisp ozone, and pure alpha heat made Maya’s head spin.

"You think you're an ordinary girl who wandered into the wrong woods," Lucian whispered, his large, warm hands reaching out to rest on her hips, pulling her flush against his hard, muscular frame. "But you were summoned here, Maya. Your blood called to mine across the mountains."

Maya looked up into his fierce, golden gaze, her breath hitching as his thumbs traced the curves of her waist. "And what does your blood say to me, Lucian?"

Lucian’s jaw hardened. He leaned down, his forehead resting against hers, his ragged breath mingling with hers.

"It says you are mine," he growled into her lips. "And heaven help the wolf who tries to take you from me."

He crushed his mouth down onto hers in a searing, possessive kiss that wiped away every thought of fear, every rule of civilization, and ignited an all-consuming fire in both their souls.

When Lucian finally broke the kiss, his breathing was ragged, his molten-gold eyes burning with a desperate, agonizing hunger that made the air between them crackle with electricity. He rested his forehead against hers, his large hands trembling against her waist as he fought against the feral beast clawing at his chest.

"If you stay in this room, Maya," Lucian growled softly, his baritone vibrating against her lips, "I will not have the strength to let you go. The full moon rises tomorrow night. The rut will take me, and my wolf will demand what is ours."

Maya looked up into his fierce, handsome face, her green eyes shining with an unshakeable, defiant warmth. She did not step back. She stepped forward, her hands sliding up his corded chest, feeling the wild, thunderous hammer of his heart beneath her palms.

"I didn't ask you to let me go, Lucian," she whispered, her voice steady and clear. "I've spent my entire life feeling like I didn't belong anywhere—not in Seattle, not in academia. But here, in your arms... I am home. I'm not running from you."

A low, guttural groan of pure defeat and adoration rumbled in Lucian’s chest as he tightened his arms around her, burying his face in her dark curls, holding his mate as if she were the only real thing in a crumbling world.

In the quiet of the library, wrapped in his arms, Maya knew that whatever trials the traditionalist council unleashed, she would face them with her head held high. She was no longer a frightened trespasser; she was a woman claiming her destiny.

Looking up into his amber-gold eyes, Maya felt every remaining doubt vanish like mist before the sun. The ancient bond had chosen them, and together, they would bridge the divide between two worlds with a love that would never be broken.

Whatever trial by fire awaited them tomorrow, Maya was ready to face it with her head held high, anchored by the love of the fiercest Alpha in the Pacific Northwest. Their bond was eternal, and together, they were completely invincible.
