Chapter 3

The Truth Between Us

The Billionaire's Secret Baby · Isla Montgomery · 7 min read

“I am not packing a single thing, and I am not going anywhere with you, Alexander!” Clara snapped, her voice trembling with defiance as she stood in the modest kitchen of her apartment behind the shop.

Through the adjoining doorway, Toby was safely occupied in his small bedroom, happily assembling wooden train tracks on the rug while a cartoon played quietly on the television. Clara had closed the door halfway, desperate to keep her son from witnessing the war brewing in her kitchen.

Alexander stood near the small round dining table, looking impossibly large, dark, and alien in her cozy, sunlit space. He had removed his heavy cashmere overcoat, leaving him in a bespoke navy suit that molded to his wide shoulders and tapered down to a narrow waist. His tie was loosened, his sleeves rolled up, revealing the corded muscle of his forearms and the heavy platinum watch on his wrist.

"You don't have a choice in this matter, Clara," Alexander said, his deep baritone completely devoid of emotion as he leaned against the doorframe, crossing his arms over his broad chest. "You gave up your right to choices the day you hid my son in this mountain backwater."

"This is not a backwater! This is our home!" Clara threw back, her eyes flashing with fury. "Toby has friends here! He has a preschool, a pediatrician, a routine! You cannot just roll in here in your black limousine and demand to uproot our lives like we are assets in one of your corporate acquisitions!"

Alexander pushed off the doorframe, taking two long, predatory strides toward her.

Clara backed away instinctively until the edge of the kitchen counter pressed against her hips. Alexander didn't stop until he was standing directly in front of her, planting his large hands on either side of her waist, effectively trapping her against the counter.

The proximity was suffocating.

The heat pouring off his massive frame, the dark, familiar scent of cedar and smoky vetiver, the sight of his chiseled lips barely six inches from hers—it all assaulted Clara’s senses, rekindling a dangerous, illicit warmth in the pit of her stomach that she had fought five long years to extinguish.

"Do you really want to talk about legal rights, Clara?" Alexander murmured, his voice dropping into a dark, gravelly register that made her knees tremble. "If I call my legal team right now, I will have an emergency custody order signed by a federal judge before three o'clock this afternoon. I own judges, governors, and senators in three states. Do you want to subject our son to custody hearings, social workers, and court-mandated DNA tests?"

Clara looked at him in horror, tears of betrayal burning her eyes. "You would do that to him? You would drag your own four-year-old child through a tabloid scandal just to punish me?"

Alexander’s jaw clenched with lethal fury. His hand came up, his long, warm fingers cupping her jawline, tilting her face up to meet his burning gaze.

"I would tear this country apart piece by piece to keep him with me," Alexander growled, his thumb tracing the trembling contour of her lower lip. His touch was scorching, sending electric sparks racing across her skin. "And I will never let you out of my sight again, Clara. For five years, I lived in an empty penthouse, drinking myself to sleep, wondering what I did wrong. Wondering how the woman who lay in my arms and promised to love me forever could pack her bags and disappear into the night without a single word."

His voice cracked on the last sentence, raw with unresolved pain.

"I didn't leave because I stopped loving you, Alexander!" Clara cried out, the confession ripping from her chest like a sob she could no longer hold back.

Alexander froze, his fingers tightening slightly on her chin. "Then why? Why did you run?"

"Because your father gave me no choice!" she wept, pressing her palms against his broad chest, feeling the frantic, heavy pounding of his heart beneath the silk of his shirt.

Alexander went rigid. His sapphire eyes narrowed into slits of ice. "What did you say?"

"Richard came to the penthouse three days after you left for your Tokyo summit," Clara whispered, her voice shaking with the memory of that terrifying morning. "He arrived with two private investigators and a folder of documents. He had photographs of my mother in her nursing home. He had my sister's college financial aid files. He told me that I was a common shop girl trying to trap the Thorne dynasty heir with an illegitimate pregnancy."

Alexander’s breath hitched in his chest. His hands dropped from the counter to grip her shoulders. "Go on."

"He told me that if I didn't terminate the pregnancy and sign an agreement to vanish from your life forever, he would have my mother’s medical life support terminated for unpaid arrears," Clara sobbed, tears streaming down her pale cheeks. "He said he would ruin my sister’s career before she even graduated. He told me you knew all about it—that you had sent him to clean up your mess before your high-society engagement to Victoria Sterling."

A sound escaped Alexander’s throat—a low, animalistic snarl of pure, murderous rage that made Clara’s entire kitchen shudder.

"He lied to you," Alexander whispered, his voice trembling with a wrath so lethal, so profound, it seemed to suck the warmth from the air. "He told me that you came to his office, demanded twenty million dollars in cash to walk away from me, and took a flight to Europe with an art dealer."

"I never took a single cent from your father!" Clara cried, looking around her modest kitchen. "Look at this place, Alexander! Look how I live! I work sixty hours a week arranging flowers to buy Toby’s shoes and pay our rent! Do you think I would live like this if I had taken twenty million dollars?!"

Alexander stared at her. The truth crashed over him like a tidal wave of shattered glass.

For five years, he had believed the woman he worshipped had sold their love for a wire transfer. For five years, he had lived with a poisoned heart, hardening himself into a monster, hating her, longing for her, dying inside—while Clara had been hiding in the mountains, raising his son alone in poverty, terrified of his family's wrath.

"Oh, God..." Alexander choked out.

In a single, violent motion of grief and desperation, Alexander pulled her into his arms. He wrapped his powerful arms around her, crushing her against his chest with bone-breaking intensity. He buried his face in the crook of her neck, his massive frame shuddering as he drew in her familiar, sweet floral scent.

"Forgive me," Alexander broke, his voice cracking into ragged, muffled sobs against her skin. "Clara... my sweet, beautiful girl... forgive me. God help me, forgive me."

Alexander held her tightly against his chest, his large hands buried in her golden curls, his cheek resting against the top of her head. He could feel the fragile, frantic beating of her heart against his ribs, could feel the dampness of her tears soaking through the silk of his dress shirt.

"When Toby was born," Clara whispered into his neck, her voice small and trembling with five years of buried grief, "I was in a small county hospital twenty miles north of here. There were no private suites, no flowers, no family waiting in the hallway. Just a nurse holding my hand through twenty hours of labor. And when they placed him in my arms, and he opened those eyes... those exact blue eyes... I cried for three days straight because I wanted so desperately to call you. I wanted to tell you that our love had created a miracle."

Alexander let out a shuddering breath, his arms tightening around her waist until there was no space left between them.

"I was in Frankfurt that week," Alexander whispered, his voice cracking. "I remember walking out of a merger meeting at midnight, staring up at the rain, feeling an unbearable ache in my chest like a part of my soul had been severed. It was the night he was born. I felt it, Clara. In my blood. And I didn't know."

He pulled back slightly, cupping her tear-streaked face in both hands, his thumbs gently wiping away the wet trails on her cheeks.

"My father will pay for every single tear you cried in that hospital room," Alexander swore, his sapphire eyes burning with a dark, sacred resolve. "I will strip him of every title, every dollar, and every shred of power he ever held. But you and Toby will never have to cry alone again. You have me now, Clara. A father who will fight the entire world to keep you safe."

Clara looked into his eyes, seeing the truth, the remorse, and the unbreakable devotion shining in their depths. The anger that had sustained her for five years slowly began to melt away, leaving only the undeniable, beating reality of her love for him.
