Chapter 4
The Treaty of Blood and Ash

The formal signing of the treaty took place before the High Council of Drakonhold in the circular Chamber of Pacts. Chancellor Vane, a severe dragon elder with iron-grey hair and eyes like polished slate, unrolled the massive vellum scroll upon a stone altar scarred with ancient claw marks.
Lord Corvin stood on the human side, his hand trembling as he dipped an eagle quill into ink mixed with ground cinnabar. 'By this treaty, the Kingdom of Solaria surrenders the border river of Aethelgard and offers the hand of Lady Lyra in perpetual holy union with the Dragon King of Drakonhold.'
Auren stepped forward, rejecting the quill. Drawing a ceremonial silver dagger from his belt, he sliced the palm of his right hand. Blood that smoked like molten embers welled along the cut. 'The dragon-kin sign not with ink, but with blood,' Auren declared, pressing his bleeding palm against the vellum. The parchment flared with brief golden flames, absorbing the sovereign blood without burning.
All eyes turned to Lyra. Chancellor Vane offered her the silver blade with a cold sneer, expecting the human woman to recoil in faint-hearted horror.
Lyra took the dagger without hesitation. With a single smooth stroke, she opened her palm. As her red blood welled forth, faint silver sparks of celestial star-fire danced along the edges of the cut before she pressed her hand firmly beside Auren's burning seal.
A collective murmur of shock rippled through the dragon elders. Auren's gaze snapped to hers, his amber eyes flaring with astonishment. The treaty was signed in blood, ash, and forbidden magic.
The Chamber of Pacts was an ancient circular amphitheater carved beneath the central caldera of the fortress. In the center of the room stood the Altar of Oaths—a massive block of grey granite that had been consecrated during the First War of the Scales, five centuries ago. Surrounding the altar stood the twelve high elders of the Dragon Council, their ceremonial robes woven from phoenix feathers and dragon scales, their faces set in stone-faced judgment.
Chancellor Vane stepped forward, holding the heavy vellum treaty. His slitted eyes flicked between Lord Corvin and King Auren with cold, clinical scrutiny. "By the ancient laws of Drakonhold, a peace treaty between sovereign houses is meaningless if it is written only in ink that can be washed away by the next rain. It must be sealed in the lifeblood of the signatories, bound to the very stone of the mountain."
Lord Corvin took the silver ceremonial blade, his hands trembling so violently that he nearly dropped it. Gritting his teeth, he scraped a shallow cut across his palm, pressing a few drops of pale red blood onto the bottom margin of the vellum.
Auren scoffed in disgust. He stepped to the altar, drawing his personal hunting dagger with effortless speed. With a single, decisive motion, he dragged the razor-sharp edge across his right palm. Blood the color of molten rubies welled up instantly, smoking faintly as it touched the freezing air. When Auren pressed his palm against the center of the treaty, the stone altar vibrated, and the vellum absorbed the smoking blood with a soft hiss of golden embers.
Chancellor Vane turned to Lyra, extending the silver knife with an arrogant, disdainful smirk. "And now the bride. Unless the southern lady prefers to sign with perfume and tears?"
Lyra did not honor the Chancellor with a response. She took the dagger firmly in her right hand. Without blinking, without a sound, she drew the steel across her left palm in a clean, decisive line. As her blood welled forth, faint silver motes of celestial star-fire danced along the edges of the wound—a subtle, harmonic reaction that escaped the human ambassador, but made every dragon elder in the room stiffen in shock.
Lyra pressed her bleeding hand firmly beside Auren's smoking seal. The blood of the dragon and the blood of the star mingled upon the vellum, sending a brief, brilliant flash of violet light rolling across the altar before settling into the parchment forever.
Auren stared at her hand, then up into her eyes, his amber gaze burning with intense, newfound fascination. The bargain was struck.
The solemnity within the Chamber of Pacts was palpable as the blood of the signatories soaked into the ancient vellum. The High Elders of the Dragon Council watched the mingling of the red and smoking blood with a mixture of awe and deep-seated suspicion. For three centuries, no human blood had ever produced a celestial harmonic reaction upon the Altar of Oaths.
Chancellor Vane stepped forward, his slitted eyes narrowing as he inspected the glowing margin of the treaty where Lyra's blood had met Auren's. The faint violet light that had flashed across the stone had settled into an iridescent sheen that pulsed in sync with the subterranean tremors of the mountain.
"This is unprecedented," Vane muttered under his breath, his voice laced with venomous concern. "The Caldera bloodline was thought to have been extinguished during the Siege of the Star Spires. If the southern kingdom has preserved an Astral lineage, the balance of power between the five dragon clans and the human realms is irrevocably altered."
Auren stepped between Vane and Lyra, his towering presence an unyielding shield. "The treaty is signed, Chancellor. The blood has been accepted by the stone of the mountain. Whatever lineage Lady Lyra carries, she is now bound to House Valerius under the eternal laws of Drakonhold. Any man who challenges her standing challenges my throne."
Vane bowed stiffly, his jaw clenched in frustration. "As the King decrees. But remember, Sire: blood that carries forgotten magic often awakens forgotten enemies."
Lyra met Vane's hostile gaze without flinching, wrapping a silk handkerchief around her cut palm. The first battle of diplomacy had been won, but the war for her survival in Drakonhold had only just begun.
The Altar of Oaths remained illuminated by the soft violet afterglow of the mingled blood for several long minutes, casting a spectral light across the severe faces of the twelve Dragon Council elders. The ancient granite block seemed to hum with deep, subterranean satisfaction, as if the mountain itself had recognized the restoration of an ancient, forgotten covenant.
Lord Corvin stood clutching his wounded hand with a white silk handkerchief, his eyes darting frantically toward the heavy iron doors of the chamber. He had expected a routine diplomatic transaction—a reluctant human hostage handed over to buy time for the southern armies. Instead, he had witnessed an elemental phenomenon that defied three hundred years of theological dogma.
"The treaty is ratified in blood and stone," High Priest Kaelen proclaimed, his aged voice trembling slightly as he lowered his bone staff. "Under the ancient statutes of the Sky and Hearth, Lady Lyra Caldera is hereby recognized as Consort-Designate of House Valerius. May the ancestors guide her spirit, and may the fire of Drakonhold burn bright in her defense."
Auren turned to Lyra, his hand reaching out to clasp hers. His fingers were hot against her skin, but where their blood met on the edges of their palms, a soothing, crystalline warmth bloomed, sealing the minor cuts with astonishing speed.
"You have bound your fate to mine, Lyra," Auren whispered, his voice carrying an unmistakable note of solemn reverence. "From this moment forward, your enemies are my enemies. Your life is my honor."
Lyra met his gaze, her hand tightening around his. "And your battles are my battles, Auren. Let us face them together."
