Chapter 2
The Warlord's Scrutiny

The Fortress of Iron and Ash was an architectural marvel carved from the sheer volcanic basalt of Blackfang Mountain, standing as an impenetrable bastion of lupine sovereignty for over eight hundred years.
Perched at an elevation of two thousand five hundred meters, the fortress commanded the only passable gorge connecting the northern tundra with the southern temperate valleys. Its monolithic curtain walls were constructed of interlocking black granite blocks fused together with molten iron and volcanic mortar, capable of withstanding heavy artillery bombardments and siege magic alike.
Inside the fortress, the great corridors were wide enough for three colossal Lycans in their shifted wolf forms to walk abreast, their vaulted arches supported by colossal pillars carved with the likenesses of ancient Alpha kings.
When Evie opened her eyes upon the massive four-poster bed draped in black wolf pelts, the sheer scale of the chamber took her breath away.
The ceiling soared thirty feet above her, crossed by colossal beams of petrified black larch. Iron braziers hung from heavy chains, burning with aromatic cedar logs that kept the sub-zero mountain draft at bay. On the far wall, a colossal tapestry woven from silver and black threads depicted the ancient alliance between the Moon Goddess and the first Obsidian Lycan king who had united the northern packs.
Yet all the history and grandeur of the fortress faded into insignificance the moment she turned her head and saw the man sitting before the hearth.
Cassian Thorne was not merely a warlord; he was an elemental force of nature poured into human bronze and steel.
The firelight illuminated the harsh, beautiful contours of his face—the high, aristocratic cheekbones, the straight nose, and the firm, sensual mouth that seemed unaccustomed to smiling. His thick, midnight-black hair fell in unruly waves around his neck, and every line of his powerful body radiated an aura of lethal, unyielding authority that demanded absolute obedience.
Sitting in a massive high-backed throne carved from black iron and elk antlers was a man.
Evie’s heart seized in her chest.
He was the human incarnation of the obsidian beast that had pinned her in the snow. Standing well over six feet four inches with broad, heavily muscled shoulders and a torso cut from iron and bronze, he looked like an ancient warrior king stepped out of lupine mythology. His thick, jet-black hair fell in unruly waves around a chiseled, aristocratic jaw darkened by a day's stubble. Across his right collarbone and down his chest ran three thick, pale battle scars. He wore a dark leather tunic with brushed-steel shoulder guards, dark trousers tucked into heavy combat boots, and a heavy black wolfskin cloak draped over his broad shoulders.
But it was his eyes that pinned her where she sat—the exact same piercing, incandescent amber-gold eyes that had stared into her soul in the ravine.
"Who are you?" Evie demanded, forcing her voice to remain steady despite the violent pounding of her heart.
The man stood up. His movements were terrifyingly fluid—possessing the effortless, coiled grace of an apex predator that had never known fear. He walked slowly toward the bed, his heavy boots silent on the stone floor, his predatory golden gaze never leaving her face.
"I am Cassian Thorne," he answered, his voice a low, rumbling velvet that seemed to wrap around her throat. "Sovereign Alpha of the Blackfang Lycan Pack, Lord of the Northern Wastes, and commander of this fortress."
He stopped at the foot of the bed, towering over her, his broad chest rising and falling in slow, measured rhythms. The raw, masculine heat radiating from his body was intoxicating, filling the air with the scent of wild cedar and winter ozone.
"And you, Dr. Genevieve Sterling," Cassian continued, his lips curving into a faint, dangerous smirk as he read from an open file on the table, "are a human border apothecary who dared to cross the sacred northern perimeter under the Blood Moon to poach our most sacred ancestral botanical reserve."
Evie lifted her chin, refusing to shrink back beneath his imposing gaze. "I didn't poach anything, Alpha Thorne. I harvested two roots of *Astragalus Lunaris* to save my dying sister from the Silver-Blight. Your sentries had months to share that cure with the border settlements, but you let human children die while your flowers rot in the snow."
A dangerous, feral growl rumbled in Cassian's chest. He leaned forward, placing both hands on the heavy carved bedposts, trapping her within his shadow. His golden eyes flared with sudden, searing intensity.
"You speak of things you do not comprehend, human," Cassian snarled softly, his face only inches from hers. "The Moonflower is not a common weed. It is the blood of our ancestors, sacred to our goddess. The southern packs and human cartels have spent decades trying to steal its genetic code to synthesize biological weapons capable of paralyzing our wolves. Anyone caught crossing our border is executed on the spot."
"Then execute me," Evie countered, her hazel-green eyes blazing with defiant fire. "Kill me if your barbaric laws demand it! But send those roots south to Silver Creek! My sister has less than thirty hours to live!"
Cassian went completely still.
He stared down at her, taking in her flushed cheeks, her trembling lips, and the fierce, unyielding courage burning in her eyes. For several breathless seconds, the only sound in the vast stone chamber was the crackle of the hearth and the ragged rhythm of their breaths.
Slowly, Cassian straightened up, his eyes darkening to the color of molten amber.
"I am not going to execute you, Genevieve," Cassian murmured, his baritone dropping into a deep, husky vibration that made her core tighten with a sudden, shocking jolt of heat.
"Why?" Evie breathed, her pulse racing.
Cassian stepped around the bed, stopping beside her hip. He reached out, his large, calloused hand moving with shocking slowness, his long fingers gently tucking a stray strand of chestnut hair behind her ear. His warm skin brushed against her cheek, and the instant their skin touched, a visible, crackling static arc of blue energy jumped between them.
Evie gasped, a shiver of pure, electric fire cascading down her spine.
Cassian's breath hitched, his golden eyes blazing with a dark, triumphant possessiveness.
"Because the moment my scent touched your skin in that ravine," Cassian whispered against her temple, his voice a ragged, primal confession, "the Moon Goddess sealed our fate. You are not my prisoner, Dr. Sterling. You are my true mate."
As Cassian towered over her at the edge of the bed, Evie refused to cower.
She pushed herself up against the pillows, her spine straight, her hazel-green eyes locked onto his burning amber stare. She had spent five years treating hardened frontier loggers, drunken mercenaries, and suspicious town magistrates; she was not about to be intimidated by a beast, no matter how magnificent or terrifying he was.
"You speak of biological weapons, Alpha Thorne," Evie said, her voice dropping into a cool, precise academic cadence that surprised even herself. "If your pack had ever bothered to establish diplomatic communication with our medical council in Silver Creek, you would know that my clinic has spent three years treating the victims of the southern cartels, not working for them. The Silver-Blight is ravaging human settlements because rogue wolves from the Crimson Fang pack deliberately contaminated our water table three weeks ago!"
Cassian’s eyes narrowed, a dangerous, razor-sharp focus tightening his jaw. "The Crimson Fang?"
"Yes!" Evie affirmed, leaning forward. "Three miners from the lower gorge were bitten by mutated rogues bearing crimson brand marks on their shoulders. Within forty-eight hours, the blight spread to their children. If you executed me and destroyed those roots, you would be doing Malakor's work for him!"
At the mention of Malakor's name, the air in the bedchamber dropped ten degrees.
A low, vibrating snarl rumbled in Cassian's throat, the pupils of his amber eyes dilating until they were almost solid black. The muscle in his jaw ticked with violent, barely suppressed fury.
"Malakor," Cassian spat the name like poison, his fists clenching until the leather of his bracers creaked. "My traitorous half-brother. He fled into the southern wastes three years ago after attempting to assassinate my council. If he has allied with human cartels to infect border children, he has broken the sacred ancestral covenants of the Goddess."
He looked back at Evie, his gaze softening with a look of fierce, unyielding admiration that sent an involuntary shiver straight to her core.
"You have the courage of an Alpha's mate, Genevieve," Cassian murmured, his baritone a low, rumbling velvet that caressed her skin. "Most humans would have wet themselves in terror before my throne. But you stand before me, bleeding and defiant, demanding justice for your sister."
When his fingers gently brushed her cheek, and the static spark of blue electricity danced between their skin, Evie felt the room tilt. The heat that flared between them was so raw, so intense, that every defense she had built around her heart seemed to melt like snow before an open flame.
