Chapter 3

The Healer's Bargain

Beyond the Razor Wire: Mated to the Lycan · Seraphina Vance · 8 min read

The silence in the vaulted bedchamber stretched between them, thick with the intoxicating electricity of the newly awakened mate bond.

Evie stared at Cassian Thorne, her breath coming in shallow, uneven gasps.

Every instinct of her modern, rational scientific mind screamed that this was madness. She was an educated physician; he was a savage Lycan warlord. They belonged to two species that had spent four decades looking at each other through the crosshairs of rifles and the bared fangs of war.

Yet the evidence of her own senses was undeniable.

Her skin where his fingers had touched still pulsed with a sweet, tingling heat. Her nostrils were filled with his scent—cedar, crushed mountain moss, and the dark, musky aroma of male power that made her mouth water and her pulse race. And deep within her chest, beneath the steady rhythm of her heart, she felt a strange, foreign warmth fluttering like a caged bird—a soul-deep tether connecting her to the formidable man standing before her.

"A true mate..." Evie whispered, her voice trembling slightly as she looked up into his burning golden eyes. "Lycans only mate within their own kind. It's biologically unprecedented."

"The Moon Goddess does not consult biology textbooks, Genevieve," Cassian replied softly, a faint, tender smile curving his lips as he watched the play of emotions across her beautiful face. "Our bloodlines are ancient. The first Alphas carried human mates who brought wisdom and healing to the packs. But over centuries of war, the blood was segregated, and the ancient bonds were forgotten."

He took a step closer, his eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made the breath catch in her throat.

"My wolf knew you the second you crossed the perimeter. He has waited thirty-two years for you, Genevieve. And he will never let you go."

Evie stared at the imposing Lycan warlord towering over her, her mind racing to process the impossible declaration. She had studied lupine biology in university—the ancient lore of fated mates, the genetic and spiritual synchronization that bound two souls together across species lines. But in modern border relations, true mates were regarded as ancient folklore—a romantic myth used by pack bards to justify dynastic alliances.

Yet looking into the burning, fathomless depths of Cassian Thorne's amber-gold eyes, feeling the lingering phantom heat where his fingers had grazed her cheek, Evie knew with terrifying certainty that he was not lying.

"That's impossible," Evie whispered, pressing her back against the headboard, her hands clutching the wolfskin pelt. "I'm human. I don't belong to your pack, and I certainly don't belong to you."

A low, dark chuckle rumbled deep in Cassian's throat—a sound so rich, masculine, and unapologetic that it sent a flutter straight to her stomach.

"The Moon Goddess does not ask for your academic permission, Genevieve," Cassian said, stepping back slightly to give her space, though his predatory gaze remained locked onto her like a brand. "For ten years, since the death of my father, I have ruled these mountains alone. My wolf has rejected every noble daughter of the southern packs. I believed I was destined to reign in solitude until the end of my days."

He gestured toward her rucksack resting on the table.

"Then you walked through my perimeter under the Blood Moon. My wolf recognized your scent before my eyes even saw your face. Your blood calls to mine like the tide to the moon."

Evie took a deep, steadying breath, deliberately forcing her scientific training to take command of her racing pulse.

"Even if whatever you're feeling is real, Alpha Thorne, my sister is dying right now in Silver Creek," Evie said, her voice turning crisp, urgent, and razor-sharp. "Every minute we waste debating mythological mating bonds is a minute closer to her respiratory collapse. If you have a shred of honor, let me take the Moonflower roots back to my clinic."

Cassian walked over to the table. He picked up the heavy rucksack, testing the weight in his large hand.

"You cannot make the journey back in time on foot, Genevieve," Cassian said calmly. "The blizzard has closed the passes. A human in snowshoes would freeze to death within two miles."

Evie felt a cold spike of despair plunge into her chest. "Then she dies..."

"No," Cassian corrected sharply, turning to face her with the commanding authority of a sovereign king. "She will not die. I will summon my elite reconnaissance scouts. Four of my fastest shadow-wolves will carry the liquid-nitrogen canisters directly to the clinic in Silver Creek. They can cross the mountain ridges in less than two hours, delivering the roots directly into your chief physician's hands."

Evie's breath caught in her throat. Her eyes widened with sudden, overwhelming hope. "You... you would do that?"

"I would burn this entire mountain to ash if it meant keeping a tear from your eyes, Genevieve," Cassian answered, his voice dropping into a solemn, sacred vow that made her chest ache with sweet intensity.

He stepped closer, resting one hand on the edge of the table, his golden eyes narrowing with deliberate, transactional focus.

"However... in exchange for saving your sister's life, you will sign a sovereign healer's compact."

Evie's eyes narrowed with suspicion. "What kind of compact?"

Cassian reached into a carved cedar cabinet and produced a scroll of heavy vellum stamped with the Blackfang silver wolf crest. He unrolled it on the table, pointing to the Latin and modern English script.

"You will remain here, at the Fortress of Iron and Ash, as the Chief Sovereign Apothecary of the Blackfang Pack," Cassian laid out the terms with absolute clarity. "You will have full access to our ancient botanical reserves, our laboratories, and our libraries. You will use your genetic knowledge to develop an permanent vaccine for the Silver-Blight to protect both our pups and your human border settlements."

Evie swallowed hard. "And between us?"

Cassian's gaze swept over her, burning with dark, patient hunger.

"You will live in the sovereign wing, under my personal protection," Cassian replied softly, his baritone a velvety promise. "I will not force you into my bed, Genevieve. I am a warlord, but I am not a savage. I will wait until your heart and your body choose me freely. But you will not leave this fortress. You belong to the Blackfang Pack now. You belong to me."

Evie looked from the vellum scroll to the medicine canisters that held her sister's life.

She knew the cost. Signing this contract meant abandoning her old life in Silver Creek. It meant living in the heart of a terrifying Lycan stronghold, bound to a lethal, brooding Alpha whose very presence set her blood on fire.

Yet looking into Cassian's eyes, seeing the unyielding honor beneath the predator's veneer, Evie knew there was only one choice she could ever make.

"Do you have a pen?" Evie asked, her chin lifting with defiant pride.

Cassian smiled—a slow, breathtaking smile that transformed his rugged, battle-scarred face into a vision of dark majesty.

He reached to his belt, unholstering a slender silver dagger with an obsidian handle. He took Evie's left hand, lifting her index finger, and gently pricked the soft pad of her skin. A single droplet of bright crimson blood welled to the surface.

"In the kingdom of the wolves, Genevieve," Cassian whispered, pressing her bleeding finger to the signature seal of the parchment, "we do not bind our oaths in ink. We bind them in blood."

The crimson droplet soaked into the vellum, flaring for a fraction of a second with an ethereal silver light.

Instantly, Cassian brought her finger to his lips, kissing the tiny puncture wound, licking away the residual blood with a tender, worshipping swipe of his warm tongue that sent shockwaves of pure, unadulterated heat straight to Evie's core.

"Your sister is saved, my fierce healer," Cassian murmured against her skin, his golden eyes blazing with eternal victory. "And you... are home."

Before sealing the pact, Cassian turned to the iron door of the bedchamber, whistling two sharp, piercing notes that echoed down the stone corridors of the fortress like the cry of a falcon.

Within seconds, the heavy oak doors swung open, and four massive Lycan warriors stepped into the chamber.

They stood well over six feet six inches tall, dressed in dark leather and wolfskin armor, their faces weathered and scarred, their amber eyes darting respectfully to their Alpha King before falling onto Evie with stunned, reverent curiosity.

"Alpha," the lead warrior rumbled, bowing his head sharply.

"Kael, take three of your fastest scouts," Cassian commanded with crisp, sovereign authority, picking up the two cryo-cannisters of Moonflower roots from the table and handing them to the lead scout. "You will run the southern ridge to the human settlement of Silver Creek. Deliver these canisters directly into the hands of the chief physician at the Sterling Clinic. Inform them that Dr. Genevieve Sterling has secured the antidote for Clara Sterling, and that the child is to receive immediate intravenous infusion."

Kael took the canisters, his eyes widening slightly as his gaze shifted to Evie, catching the unmistakable scent of his Alpha's mate bond clinging to her skin.

"And if human border militia attempt to intercept us, Alpha?" Kael asked.

"Avoid engagement if possible," Cassian instructed coldly. "If fired upon, evade. But deliver that medicine without delay. If a single root is damaged, you will answer to my claws."

"By your command, Alpha," Kael bowed deeply, turning and leading his scouts out of the room at a sprint.

Evie felt a heavy sob of pure, overwhelming relief catch in her throat. She closed her eyes, tears of gratitude spilling down her cheeks as she realized that her sister's life was truly saved.

When she opened her eyes, Cassian was standing right in front of her.

He had unholstered the silver dagger with the obsidian handle, holding her hand with shocking gentleness as he prepared to bind their sovereign compact in blood.

When the silver blade pricked her finger, Evie didn't even flinch. The tiny drop of blood felt like a sacred offering.

And when Cassian brought her bleeding finger to his lips, closing his warm, sensual mouth over her skin, his rough tongue licking away the crimson droplet, Evie gasped. A shockwave of scorching, liquid fire shot from her finger straight down to her core, making her knees weak and her hips ache with a sudden, unbearable hunger.

Cassian's golden eyes flared with primal, victorious heat as he pulled back, his thumb lingering on the tiny puncture wound.

"The pact is sealed, Genevieve," Cassian murmured, his voice a low, possessive growl against her lips. "Clara will live. And you... are mine for eternity."
