Chapter 2
The Dangerous Pact
Burning Revenge · Camilla Cruz · 6 min read
Upstairs in the private penthouse salon of the Obsidian Club, the heavy mahogany doors clicked shut, cutting off the jazz music and chatter of the casino below.
Adrian poured two tumblers of aged Macallan over carved ice, handed one to Elena, and leaned back in his leather armchair. He steepled his large, tattooed fingers, studying Elena with unhurried, predatory satisfaction.
Adrian leaned back in his leather chair, steepled his large, tattooed fingers, and studied Elena with unhurried, predatory satisfaction.
"You played four hands, red," Adrian murmured, his gravelly baritone smooth as twenty-year-old bourbon. "You bluffed a pair of sevens against an oligarch's full house, read his eye twitch on the turn, and folded when you knew he had the flush. You're not a socialite looking for an adrenaline rush. Who are you?"
Elena held his gaze, refusing to flinch under the weight of his suffocating Alpha presence. "A woman who appreciates a man who knows how to take what he wants."
Adrian let out a low, rumbling chuckle that vibrated through the felt. He stood up from the table. Standing at his full six-foot-four height, he towered over her, his broad shoulders blocking out the salon lights.
He didn't ask; he reached down, took her by the elbow in a grip that was firm yet surprisingly gentle, and guided her toward the private executive elevator at the rear of the lounge.
"Walk with me, Elena," he said softly into her ear.
Elena’s heart skipped a violent beat. *He knows my name.*
Before she could pull away, the elevator doors closed, sealing them in an enclosed glass cabin ascending rapidly toward the penthouse level. The silence between them was thick with combustible tension. Adrian stood behind her, his large frame bare inches from her bare back, his body heat radiating through the silk of her dress like a furnace.
When the doors opened, they stepped into the private executive vault of the Obsidian Club.
The room was constructed of reinforced steel, dark Italian marble, and bulletproof glass overlooking the black, churning waves of the Atlantic Ocean. In the center sat an antique mahogany desk, a leather Chesterfield sofa, and a wall of biometric gun safes.
Adrian walked over to the marble bar, pouring two crystal glasses of peated Islay scotch. He walked back, handing one to Elena, his charcoal eyes locking onto hers with terrifying clarity.
"Elena Cross," Adrian said calmly, sipping his scotch. "Twenty-five years old. Daughter of Thomas Cross, former owner of the Sapphire Sands Casino. You graduated top of your class in forensic financial auditing from Columbia three months ago. Your younger brother, Leo, is a sophomore at NYU on a scholarship you secretly pay for by working seventy hours a week as a corporate compliance consultant."
Every drop of blood drained from Elena’s face. Her fingers tightened around the crystal glass until her knuckles turned white.
"You ran a background check on me," she whispered, her voice tightening.
"I run background checks on every shadow that enters my club, red," Adrian murmured, stepping into her space, his towering presence swallowing the room. "The moment you bought an entry ticket through an alias two weeks ago, my cyber security team flagged your IP address. I know you spent the last six months analyzing Victor Kane’s shipping manifests. And I know you came to my table tonight thinking you could seduce Kane’s former enforcer into doing your dirty work."
Elena lifted her chin, her emerald-green eyes flashing with fierce, unapologetic defiance. The facade of the submissive seductress shattered, revealing the brilliant, lethal woman beneath.
"And what if I did?" Elena spat, setting her glass onto the desk with a sharp click. "Victor Kane murdered my father! He stole his life's work, framed him for fraud, and drove him off a roof! Kane is a monster, and you know it better than anyone! You bled for him for six years before you realized he was a cancer! You want him dead just as badly as I do!"
Adrian didn't raise his voice. He took a slow step closer, his eyes dropping to her parted crimson lips, tracking the rapid, frantic rise and fall of her chest beneath the thin red silk.
"You're right, Elena," Adrian rumbled, his voice dropping into a dark, husky whisper that sent shivers racing down her spine. "I hate Victor Kane more than life itself. I have spent four years preparing the noose that will hang him on the docks. But I don't need a fiery little accountant to fight my wars."
He reached out, his large, calloused hand cupping the side of her neck, his thumb lightly stroking the sensitive pulse point fluttering frantically beneath her skin. The heat of his touch was like an open flame, scorching away her defenses, sending a delicious, traitorous wave of heat pooling straight between her thighs.
"Why are you here, Adrian?" Elena whispered, her breath trembling as his fingers brushed her jawline. "If you know everything, why haven't you thrown me out to Kane's men?"
Adrian’s eyes darkened until the gray vanished into pure midnight black. A slow, devastating, dangerous smirk touched his chiseled lips.
"Because the moment you walked down that staircase in that red dress, looking at me like you wanted to eat me alive... my beast decided you belonged to me," Adrian growled softly into her lips.
He leaned down until his breath fanned across her cheek, hot and smelling of scotch and dark spice.
"Here is my counter-offer, Elena," Adrian murmured, his hand sliding down to the curve of her hip, pulling her flush against his rock-hard thighs. "I will give you Kane's private financial ledgers. I will give you the offshore accounts, the witness depositions, and the federal wiretaps that will send him to federal prison or six feet under the Atlantic. But in exchange... you move into my penthouse. You belong to me. In my bed, by my side, until Kane is in the dirt."
Elena gasped, her hands pressing against his broad, muscular chest. She felt the heavy, thundering beat of his heart beneath his dress shirt, and the massive, hard ridge of his arousal pressing demanding against her lower belly through the silk.
"An indecent proposal, Mr. Vance," Elena breathed, her mind spinning between revenge and terrifying desire.
"The only proposal you're getting, red," Adrian whispered, his lips grazing the corner of her mouth. "Do we have a deal?"
Elena looked into his dark charcoal eyes, seeing the ruthless predator who could either be her salvation or her destruction.
"Deal," she whispered.
Inside the executive vault, the silence was heavy, broken only by the hum of the electronic climate control and the distant crash of the Atlantic waves outside the reinforced glass.
Elena looked around the room. On the mahogany wall behind Adrian’s desk hung an architectural rendering of the Sapphire Sands Casino—her father's original master blueprints, stamped with Thomas Cross's signature in faded blue ink.
"You kept his plans," Elena said softly, her voice tightening as she stared at the framed drawing.
Adrian stood beside her, sipping his scotch, his eyes reflecting the blue moonlight on the glass. "Thomas Cross was an honest man, Elena. In a city built on corrupt sewage and blood money, your father was one of the few men who built things with his own hands and paid his workers fair wages. When Victor Kane ran him out of business, I tried to buy his debt to keep him alive. But Kane moved too fast, forged the embezzlement papers, and pushed your father before I could intervene."
He turned to face her, his charcoal-gray eyes burning with dark, solemn intensity.
"I didn't save your father five years ago, red," Adrian murmured, his voice dropping into a low, gravelly vow that vibrated through the steel room. "That is a stain on my soul. But I will help you avenge him. Together, we will rip Victor Kane’s empire from the boardwalk and burn it until there is nothing left but ash."
Elena looked up into his chiseled, battle-scarred face, feeling the walls of five years of solitary grief cracking beneath the weight of his unyielding strength.
"Thirty days, Adrian," she whispered. "Give me Kane's head, and I am yours."
"I don't just want your body for thirty days, Elena," Adrian growled softly against her lips, his hand tightening on her hip. "I want your heart. And I always take what I want."
