Chapter 3
Playing with Fire
Burning Revenge · Camilla Cruz · 5 min read
The cliffside estate of Adrian Vance stood three miles north of the city on the rugged bluffs of Cape May, overlooking the roaring waves of the Atlantic.
Known as the Sea-Glass Citadel, the compound was a fortress of black granite, polished river stone, and massive floor-to-ceiling glass pavilions surrounded by armed perimeter sentries and high-voltage fences. Inside, the master suite occupied the top floor—a sprawling, minimalist haven of dark walnut, exposed steel beams, and an enormous California king bed draped in black Egyptian cotton sheets.
Elena moved into the estate the following morning under armed escort.
For three days, Adrian maintained a torturous, agonizing proximity. He provided her with high-speed encrypted satellite terminals, financial records from Kane’s five shell casinos, and an offshore forensic team to trace Kane’s money laundering.
Yet at night, the atmosphere in the penthouse turned into a suffocating pressure cooker of unbridled sexual tension.
Adrian did not force her. He did not demand that she share his bed on the first night. Instead, he tormented her with his presence. He walked around the suite bare-chested in the evenings, his sculpted torso and tattooed shoulders glistening in the firelight of the stone hearth, his charcoal eyes tracking her every movement with a hunger that made Elena’s core ache with a constant, throbbing fever.
On the fourth night, a coastal storm battered the glass pavilions with gale-force winds and sheets of cold rain.
Elena sat at the black marble kitchen island at 1:00 AM, wearing only a thigh-length black silk robe tied loosely at her waist, her copper curls tumbled across her shoulders. She was squinting at an offshore balance sheet for *Atlantic Bay Maritime*—one of Kane’s primary laundering fronts—trying to locate a missing twelve-million-dollar discrepancy.

The soft sound of bare feet against the heated hardwood floor made her look up.
Adrian walked into the kitchen, wearing only low-slung dark lounge trousers that hung low on his muscular hips. His sculpted chest was bare, displaying the intricate black dragon tattoo that curled from his right pec down across his chiseled ribs to disappear into his waistband. He carried a bottle of chilled vintage champagne and two flutes.
"Still working, red?" Adrian rumbled softly, his gravelly voice thick with sleep.
He walked behind her chair, setting the champagne on the counter. He didn't step away; he leaned forward, bracing his large hands on the marble on either side of her, caging her in with his furnace-hot warmth. The scent of sandalwood, cedar smoke, and dark masculine adrenaline washed over her senses, making Elena’s breath hitch in her throat.
"I found the discrepancy, Adrian," Elena said, trying to keep her voice steady as her heart hammered against her ribs. "Kane is using cargo container serial numbers registered to decommissioned Panamanian freighters. He's moving eight million dollars a week through the southern docks. If we can get physical access to the shipping manifest on his private yacht tomorrow night, we have him."
Adrian didn't look at the screen. He leaned down, his lips brushing against the sensitive curve of her neck just beneath her ear, his warm breath sending goosebumps cascading across her skin.
"Brilliant, beautiful, and ruthless," Adrian whispered huskily against her skin, his mouth trailing a scorching path down the side of her throat. "You have the mind of a criminal mastermind, Elena."
Elena shivered, her head tilting back involuntarily against his broad shoulder, granting him deeper access. "Adrian... we're working..."
"I've worked enough tonight," Adrian growled low in his throat.
His large, calloused hand reached out, his long fingers catching the satin belt of her silk robe. Slowly, deliberately, with agonizing control, he pulled the knot free.
The black silk parted, falling open over her shoulders, revealing her soft, honey-tanned curves, her round, high breasts, and the delicate black lace panties that barely covered her dripping, aching core.
Adrian let out a ragged, guttural curse of pure worship. His hands came to rest upon her narrow waist, his thumbs pressing into the soft flesh of her hips, lifting her effortlessly off the barstool and turning her around to sit on the edge of the marble island.
Elena gasped as her thighs parted, her bare legs bracketing Adrian’s muscular hips. Through the thin fabric of his trousers, she could feel the massive, heavy length of his erection pressing rock-hard against her center.
Adrian stepped between her knees, his charcoal eyes blazing with an ancient, untamed hunger that stole the breath from her lungs.
"Look at you," Adrian panted, his hands sliding up her bare thighs, leaving trails of liquid fire across her skin. "You tremble every time I enter the room, Elena. You pretend you came here only for revenge. But your body doesn't lie to me."
Elena’s hands rose, her fingers tangling in his dark, cropped hair, her emerald eyes burning up into his with fearless surrender.
"Then take what you bargained for, Adrian," she whispered. "Stop torturing me."
Adrian groaned—a sound torn from his marrow. He leaned down, crushing his mouth onto hers in a fierce, devastating kiss that shattered the last remnants of her control.
The kitchen of the Sea-Glass Citadel was illuminated only by the soft, amber glow of the under-cabinet lighting.
Adrian’s mouth was relentless, possessing hers with a hunger that stole every coherent thought from her mind. His tongue swept deep into her mouth, tasting of vintage champagne, sweet desire, and dark dominance. Elena whimpered against his lips, her fingers digging into his broad, tattooed shoulders, feeling the thick, corded muscles flexing beneath his warm skin.
Adrian lifted her higher onto the cold marble island, pulling her hips flush against his furnace-hot pelvis. His hands slid beneath her opened black silk robe, tracing the curve of her ribcage, moving upward until his large, calloused palms cupped the full, trembling swell of her breasts.
When his thumbs flicked across her sensitive, rock-hard nipples, Elena gasped, her back arching off the counter in exquisite torture.
"Adrian... please..." she panted, her breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps against his neck.
"Please what, red?" Adrian growled huskily, his lips trailing scorching kisses down her jawline to the hollow of her throat. "Tell me what you want from me. Tell me you want me inside you."
"I want you," she sobbed out, her thighs parting wider, her heels hooking behind his calves, pressing her dripping, aching core against his rock-hard length. "I've wanted you since the moment I walked into your club."
Adrian groaned—a sound of pure, unbridled triumph. He unfastened his trousers with one hand, letting the fabric drop to the floor. When his massive, heavy erection pressed against her slick entrance, hot and weeping with need, both of them let out a simultaneous shudder of anticipation.
He caught her by the hips, lifting her slightly, and with one slow, deep, devastating stroke, Adrian buried himself to the hilt inside her tight, molten depths.
Elena cried out, her head thrown back, her vision exploding into stars as the sheer size and heat of him filled her completely. For three years, she had felt dead inside, numb to the world. But as Adrian began to move—long, deep, powerful thrusts that rocked her on the marble counter—every nerve in her body detonated with liquid, celestial fire.
He took her against the island with fierce, possessive rhythm, his eyes locked onto hers in the dim light, watching every expression of bliss on her face until they shattered together in a blinding, earth-shaking climax that left them breathless in the quiet kitchen.
