Chapter 3
High Stakes and Cold Fury
Chained to His Bed · Victoria Sterling · 5 min read
Three weeks into their marriage, the high-stakes VIP tournament at the Bellagio drew the world's wealthiest gamblers to the private salons on the penthouse level.
Mia stood beside Dante at the entrance to the high-limit baccarat room, looking stunning in an emerald velvet backless gown that set off her honey-hazel eyes and auburn curls. Dante wore a bespoke tuxedo, his hand resting possessively on her hip, introducing her to foreign gaming ministers and European hotel magnates who treated Mia with the profound respect reserved for royalty.
While Dante stepped away to authorize a three-million-dollar marker for a Macau consortium, Mia walked toward the private balcony overlooking the glittering fountains.
A greasy, familiar voice sneered behind her.
"Well, well. If it isn't little Mia, playing dress-up on the mafia's dime."
Mia turned, her blood running cold as she saw Leo Sterling—her disgraced ex-fiancé. Leo wore a crumpled tuxedo, his eyes bloodshot, smelling heavily of bourbon.
"What are you doing here, Leo?" Mia said coldly, her chin lifting. "You were banned from every Moretti property in Nevada."
Leo took a stumbling step toward her, his face contorted in drunken bitterness. "Your father sold you to a butcher, Mia! Dante Moretti is a violent animal! You think he loves you? You're just a tax write-off and a warm bed! Come with me tonight—I have ten million stashed in an offshore account in Belize. We can leave Vegas together!"
He reached out, his sweaty hand grabbing her wrist with desperate force.
"Let go of me, Leo!" Mia hissed, wrenching her arm back.
Before Leo could tighten his grip, an iron fist clamped onto his throat.
Dante Moretti lifted the six-foot-one Leo Sterling clear off the floor with one arm, slamming him against the marble pillar with enough force to crack stone.
Leo choked, his eyes bulging in terror as his feet dangled six inches off the ground.
The private salon fell dead silent. High-rollers and pit bosses froze in terror.
Dante’s ice-gray eyes were pitch-black with murderous fury. His knuckles turned white on Leo’s throat, his voice dropping to a low, lethal vibration that turned the blood in the room to ice.
"Touch my wife again, Sterling," Dante whispered, "and I will have your fingers cut off one by one and fed to the coyotes in the Red Rock canyon. You stole from her father. You humiliated her family. And now you dare breathe in her presence?"
"Dante... please... I was just talking—" Leo wheezed, gasping for air.
"You don't talk to her," Dante snarled.
With a flick of his wrist, Dante hurled Leo across the marble floor into the arms of four armed Bellagio security guards.
"Take this parasite to the basement," Dante ordered coldly. "Ensure he is escorted to the California state line. If he ever steps foot in Nevada again, execute the standing trespass warrants."
Leo was dragged away weeping in terror.
Dante turned to Mia, his lethal rage vanishing instantly, replaced by fierce, protective concern. He cupped her face in his large, warm hands, his thumbs gently soothing her trembling jaw.
"Did he hurt you, Mia?" Dante rasped, his voice thick with raw emotion. "Tell me."
Mia looked up into his fierce, devoted gaze, her heart hammering with overwhelming passion. She leaned into his touch, her fingers resting over his wrist. "I'm fine, Dante. You came."
"I will always come for you, Mia," Dante vowed fiercely, his lips claiming hers in a deep, public kiss that declared her untouchable before the entire city of Las Vegas.
The silence in the private VIP salon on the top floor of the Bellagio was heavy, broken only by the muffled chime of the slot machines forty floors below and the furious, ragged breathing of the men in the room.
Dante’s large, large, powerful hand remained firmly cupped around Mia’s waist, his grip possessive and unyielding. The surrounding high-rollers—billionaire oil heirs from Dubai, Silicon Valley venture capitalists, and European casino magnates—stared in breathless awe.
In Las Vegas, Dante Moretti was infamous for his clinical detachment; he dismantled competitors with spreadsheets, lawsuits, and margin calls. Seeing him physically lift a man off the floor with his bare hands to defend his wife’s honor was a terrifying revelation.
Dante turned to the pit boss, a tall man in a black tuxedo who stood sweating by the cashier podium.
"Mr. Sterling’s marker is officially revoked," Dante ordered coldly, his voice slicing through the silence like a razor through silk. "Liquidate his collateral in California. If Leo Sterling attempts to enter any Moretti casino or hotel in the United States, arrest him for armed trespass."
The pit boss nodded frantically, signaling for the security team to complete the eviction.
Dante turned back to Mia, his expression transforming instantly from a terrifying warlord into an intensely protective husband. He gently lifted her hand, examining her slender wrist where Leo’s sweaty grip had left a faint red mark.
A muscle ticked in Dante’s sculpted jaw, his ice-gray eyes flashing with cold, dangerous fire. He brought her wrist to his lips, kissing the bruised skin with an unhurried, breathtaking tenderness that sent a wave of heat straight to her core.
"Nobody puts their hands on you, Mia," Dante whispered against her skin, his deep voice thick with emotion. "Nobody."
Mia looked up into his fierce, possessive gaze. The man standing before her had forced her into an arranged marriage to collect a debt; yet every action, every touch, and every word he spoke proved that he valued her life infinitely more than sixty million dollars.
"I know, Dante," she murmured softly, her fingers gently curling around his knuckles. "I know."
Dante smiled—that slow, devastating smile that made her soul take flight—and led his queen back toward the high-stakes baccarat tables, where the entire room parted before them like the Red Sea.
As the security detail cleared the high-limit salon and the VIP patrons resumed their baccarat hands in hushed, reverent whispers, Dante led Mia to the private terrace overlooking the Bellagio fountains.
The desert night was warm, the dancing waters shooting hundreds of feet into the neon-lit sky to the swelling strains of Andrea Bocelli. Dante stood behind her, wrapping his tuxedo jacket around her shoulders, his arms encircling her waist as they watched the water dance.
"You handled yourself with extraordinary poise in there, Mia," Dante murmured softly, his lips grazing the sensitive skin below her ear. "Most women would have panicked."
Mia leaned her head back against his shoulder, letting his solid warmth chase away the lingering chill of Leo's touch. "I stopped panicking the moment you stepped between us, Dante. I knew you wouldn't let him touch me."
Dante’s arms tightened around her waist, his chin resting against her auburn curls as the fountains erupted in a final, magnificent crescendo. "Never, Mia. You are under my protection for the rest of your life."
Below the penthouse balcony, the Bellagio fountains settled into stillness, their mist cooling the desert night air. Hand in hand, crowned in power and mutual devotion, Dante and Mia walked back into the private salons, their presence commanding absolute respect from every gaming magnate in the room.
The applause of the casino patrons washed over them, but Dante's ice-gray eyes remained fixed only on Mia. In that glittering desert kingdom, their union was sealed with iron and fire.
