His Contract Bride

Mia Chen had exactly $47.32 in her bank account, three overdue notices stacked in a menacing pile on her peeling laminate kitchen counter, and a stubborn sense of pride that was rapidly becoming an unaffordable luxury.

She was twenty-five years old, holding a culinary degree from Johnson & Wales, working seventy hours a week as the junior sous chef at Rosario's in the West Village, and drowning beneath thirty-eight thousand dollars of culinary school debt. Her landlord had slipped an eviction warning under her door that morning.

So when the anonymous advertisement appeared on her phone—discreet, private, brokered by a premier Manhattan legal firm, offering $500,000 for a one-year "contractual spousal arrangement"—she almost scrolled past it. Almost.

But $47.32 has a brutal way of making 'almost' completely irrelevant.

The meeting was held at The Meridian on 57th Street—a boutique private hotel so exclusive it lacked a street sign, recognizable only by its brushed bronze awning and two stone-faced security guards wearing earpieces. Mia arrived wearing her best dark denim jeans (the ones without kitchen burns), an ivory silk blouse she had carefully steamed three times, and low heels borrowed from her roommate.

The private express elevator whisked her directly to the forty-second-floor penthouse suite. When the brass doors slid open, Mia stepped onto white Carrara marble floors under a vaulted ceiling, surrounded by gallery-worthy modern art and a panoramic glass wall overlooking the illuminated expanse of Central Park.
