Chapter 1

The Geneva Ambush

Lethal Rivalry · Scarlett Brooks · 6 min read

The sub-zero rain over Lake Geneva fell in relentless needles of liquid ice, blurring the glittering neon and platinum lights of the Swiss financial district into streaks of obsidian and shattered diamond. Sixty feet above the rain-swept cobblestones of the Quai du Mont-Blanc, balanced with impossible feline poise on the narrow zinc cornice of the Banque de Savoie, Sienna Locke adjusted the night-vision optics of her tactical visor and smiled coldly into the dark.

For four relentless years, Sienna had been the apex ghost for Locke International—the most lethal private espionage contractor in Western Europe. She was fast, untouchable, and devastatingly efficient, possessing an encyclopedic knowledge of cryptographic firewalls and a black belt in Krav Maga that had sent dozens of rival mercenaries to trauma wards.

Yet tonight was not merely a multi-million-dollar corporate contract; tonight was about settling a bitter, deeply personal score.

Inside subterranean vault 404 rested the Aegis Drive—a custom quantum storage device containing encrypted black-budget wire transfers, satellite telemetry, and covert arms ledgers for half the corrupt oligarchs in Eurasia. And she had every intention of extracting it right from under the arrogant, infuriating nose of Alexander Hunt.

"Perimeter cameras looped for eighty seconds, Locke," her technical handler, Carl, murmured through her bone-conduction earpiece. "Bypass the secondary infrared grid on the terrace balustrade and you have a clear run to the central vault. But hurry—Hunt's surveillance signatures were detected crossing the Pont du Mont-Blanc four minutes ago."

"Copy that, Carl," Sienna whispered back, her voice a purr of dark, anticipatory adrenaline. "Keep the turbine idling at the private boat dock. I'll be out with Hunt's pride in my pocket before his designer hair gel dries."

Sienna dropped silently onto the terrace flagstones, a lethal shadow clad in form-fitting matte-black ceramic weave. Using a diamond-tipped ultrasonic cutter, she carved a clean circle through the reinforced plate glass, slipped through the opening, and padded down the deserted marble gallery.

Vault 404 was supposed to be a silent, steel-reinforced tomb, waiting in the dark for her master keycard.

Instead, as she slipped past the six-inch titanium blast doors, a tall, broad-shouldered silhouette stepped out from the recessed shadows of the vault alcove, leaning against the pedestal with casual, infuriating elegance.

"You're late, Locke," Alexander Hunt spoke, his deep, resonant baritone dripping with amused arrogance. "I've been standing here for four minutes. I was beginning to worry your little getaway heels had gotten stuck in the cobblestones."

Sienna froze, every combative nerve in her body detonating with instant hostility.

Even in the dim amber emergency lighting of the vault, Alexander was infuriatingly handsome. Thirty-one years old, the golden prodigy and tactical mastermind of Hunt Intelligence, he stood six feet three inches of dense, functional muscle, with razor-sharp patrician cheekbones, thick dark hair, and piercing amber eyes that burned like aged whiskey held up to candlelight. He wore a bespoke charcoal tactical suit that molded to his broad shoulders and narrow waist like a second skin. In his gloved right hand, he casually flipped the titanium casing of the Aegis Drive into the air, catching it with effortless reflexes.

"Give me the drive, Hunt," Sienna hissed, drawing her suppressed Glock 19 with lightning speed and leveling the muzzle straight at the bridge of his aristocratic nose. "Before I put a permanent ventilation hole through that smug jaw of yours."

Alexander didn't so much as blink. Instead, he took a slow, deliberate step toward her, his amber eyes tracing the dangerous curves of her bodysuit with brazen, hungry appreciation.

"You look breathtaking when you're threatening aggravated assault, darling," Alexander drawled softly, closing the gap between them until his chest was barely three feet from her weapon. "But you know as well as I do that Locke International's decryption algorithms couldn't crack a child's toy, let alone a quantum-encrypted drive. Hand your little sidearm to me, and I might consider letting you buy me black truffles in Zurich."

"I'd rather drink boiling battery acid," Sienna snarled, and lunged.

In a blur of martial speed, she feinted high with her left hand, sweeping her right combat boot in a concussive roundhouse kick aimed straight at his ribs to dislodge the drive.

Alexander anticipated the maneuver with chilling precision. He sidestepped with feline fluidity, his left hand clamping down on her ankle, pulling her forward off-balance while his right arm snaked around her waist. In one violent, breathtaking pivot, he slammed her back flush against the reinforced steel wall of the vault, his colossal, muscular frame pinning her completely.

His chest pressed hard against hers, the friction of their tactical gear sparking an instant, searing heat between them.

"Still so aggressive, Locke," Alexander murmured, his face inches from hers. His warm breath smelled of dark espresso, bourbon, and winter mint. "Remember Monaco? When you slipped a sedative into my martini and left me handcuffed to a high-stakes roulette table in my underwear?"

"Best night of my entire professional career," Sienna breathed, her pulse hammering wildly against her ribs as she drove her knee upward toward his groin with vicious intent.

Alexander twisted his hips with lightning speed, trapping her knee between his powerful, muscled thighs. His hand slid up the nape of her neck, his leather-clad fingers tangling firmly into her dark auburn hair, tilting her face up toward his. For a suspended, breathless second, their gazes locked, the air between them thick with the volatile, combustible electricity that had defined their four-year war across three continents. Every close-quarters shootout, every stolen glance across international gala ballrooms had been building to this intoxicating, razor-sharp collision.

"You've been obsessing over me ever since, haven't you?" Alexander taunted in a low, gravelly rasp, his gaze dropping to the parted fullness of her lips.

"In your wildest, most pathetic dreams, Hunt—"

Before the insult could clear her teeth, a sharp, rhythmic electronic tone began to pulse from the pedestal behind them.

Both operatives instantly went rigid.

"Did you rig a thermite charge on that pedestal?" Sienna asked, her mocking tone instantly replaced by icy tactical focus.

"No," Alexander said, his eyes narrowing as he glanced over his shoulder. "Did you?"

"Hell no."

On the digital readout beneath the pedestal, a crimson countdown timer was flashing with frantic speed: *00:00:03... 00:00:02...*

"Ambush!" Alexander roared.

In one violent, protective motion, he grabbed Sienna by the chest rig, spinning his massive body over hers as he threw them both through the heavy vault doorway toward the outer marble corridor.

*BOOM!*

A catastrophic detonation ripped through the subterranean chamber. A blinding wall of thermite fire, concussive pressure, and pulverized concrete blew the heavy titanium doors clean off their hinges, launching Alexander and Sienna through the air like ragdolls. They crashed onto the polished floor of the bank's main lobby amid a torrential rain of shattered safety glass, burning insulation, and collapsing plaster.

Coughing violently through thick plumes of acrid gray smoke, Sienna pushed herself up onto her elbows. Beside her, Alexander rolled onto his side, spitting blood onto the marble, his charcoal tactical suit shredded along his left shoulder where flying shrapnel had sliced deep through the fabric.

Above them on the lobby wall, the bank's emergency broadcast monitors flickered to life.

Urgent crimson banners scrolled across global news networks:

**BREAKING NEWS: CATASTROPHIC TERROR DETONATION AT BANQUE DE SAVOIE IN GENEVA. INTERPOL ISSUES LEVEL-ONE RED NOTICES FOR ROGUE OPERATIVES ALEXANDER HUNT AND SIENNA LOCKE. RUSSIAN KINGPIN ALEXEI VOLKOV AND THE CHIMERA SYNDICATE ACCUSE DUO OF BLACK-MARKET DEFENSE THEFT.**

"They set us up," Sienna whispered, staring in horror as high-resolution security photos of her and Alexander entering the bank flashed across television screens worldwide. "The Aegis Drive was bait. They used our rivalry to lure us both into the kill zone."

"Not just framed, Locke," Alexander said darkly, pulling a handheld signal scanner from his belt. "Every intelligence agency from MI6 to the CIA has just been fed fabricated digital signatures showing you and me auctioning off European air-defense codes to Volkov's cartel. We have a shoot-on-sight execution order on our heads across the entire continent."

Outside on the boulevard, the shrill, synchronized wail of thirty tactical police sirens echoed through the icy rain.

Alexander hauled Sienna to her feet with an iron grip. "We stay here and we're Swiss cheese in sixty seconds. Move."

"Don't touch me, Hunt!" she snapped, trying to wrench her wrist free even as her combat boots matched his explosive strides toward the service stairs.

"Shut up and run, Locke," Alexander snarled back, kicking open the heavy steel access door leading down into the city's subterranean storm drainage network. "You want to kill me? Take a ticket behind every sniper in Europe. Until we clear our names, you and I are shackled together."
