Chapter 3

The Cross-Border Exfiltration

Lethal Rivalry · Scarlett Brooks · 7 min read

The midnight express train from Zurich to Vienna rumbled rhythmically over the frost-coated rails of the Arlberg Pass, its steel wheels clicking steadily against the iron track as it climbed into the towering, snow-draped Austrian Alps. Outside the double-glazed cabin window, a blinding alpine blizzard whipped through the jagged pine forests, burying the mountain valleys in pristine white.

Inside private sleeper compartment 12 on the second carriage, the atmosphere was suffocating with high-voltage physical tension and razor-sharp animosity.

The compartment was no larger than eight feet by six feet, furnished with two narrow bunk berths, a tiny mahogany writing desk, and a claustrophobic en-suite lavatory. Carl had secured the tickets under forged diplomatic passports from Liechtenstein, slipping Alexander and Sienna aboard during a three-minute scheduled mail stop in Buchs.

Sienna sat on the lower leather berth, her back pressed against the wood paneling, cleaning her Glock with meticulous, mechanical precision. She had stripped off her soaked tactical gear, changing into a borrowed oversized charcoal cashmere sweater that belonged to Alexander and a pair of fitted black denim trousers. The sweater swathed her frame in heavy, luxurious warmth, carrying the intoxicating masculine scent of sandalwood, cedarwood, and Alexander’s skin.

Across the narrow aisle, Alexander stood bare-chested in the doorway of the tiny lavatory, wiping the grime of the Geneva sewer from his face with a warm towel.

Sienna’s eyes inadvertently traced the lines of his body, and her breath caught slightly in her throat.

Alexander was sculpted like a gladiator. Broad, muscular shoulders tapered into a tight, corded waist and washboard abdomens crisscrossed with pale silver scars from knife wounds and bullet grazes. His chest was dusted with dark hair, and the muscle of his upper arms flexed with every movement as he reached into a small medical kit on the shelf.

"Take a picture, Locke," Alexander drawled without looking at her, his amber eyes flashing with mocking amusement in the vanity mirror. "It lasts longer."

Sienna scoffed, her cheeks heating up despite her best efforts to remain ice-cold. "I was looking at the shrapnel wound, Hunt. It looks infected. If you get septic and die in my sleeper car, I'm tossing your carcass into the snowdrifts."

"Such tender bedside manner," he countered, stepping back into the compartment. He sat on the bench beside her, his bare shoulder barely two inches from hers, filling the small space with an overwhelming wave of body heat. He winced slightly as he reached around to dab antiseptic onto the jagged gash on his shoulder blade. "Hand me the suture kit."

Sienna looked at his clumsy, one-handed attempt to thread the curved surgical needle.

"Give me that before you sew your own ear to your shoulder," she snapped, snatching the needle driver and sterile thread from his fingers.

Alexander paused, looking down at her. "You offering to play nurse, Locke?"

"I'm offering to ensure you can pull a trigger when Volkov's hitmen catch up with us," she muttered, sliding around behind him on the narrow leather cushion.

Her fingers were surprisingly gentle as they rested against the warm, bare skin of his back. Alexander’s muscles tensed involuntarily beneath her touch—not from pain, but from the sudden, concussive electric shock that surged between their bare skin.

"Breathe, Hunt," Sienna commanded softly, pouring iodine over the laceration. "This is going to sting."

"I've survived Russian interrogation pits, Locke," Alexander rumbled, his voice dropping into a low, gravelly vibration. "A few stitches from your delicate hands won't make me flinch."

Sienna didn't answer. With practiced, surgical efficiency, she began closing the wound, her fingers steady as she threw five neat, sterile sutures across the tear. Her face was inches from his skin; she could feel the heat radiating from his spine, the scent of him intoxicating her senses, the steady, rhythmic rise and fall of his powerful chest.

With every stitch, the silence in the compartment grew heavier, thicker, charged with an intensity that made the sub-zero blizzard outside feel like a distant dream.

When she knotted the final suture and snipped the thread with medical scissors, she pressed a sterile gauze pad over the repair.

"Done," she murmured, her voice uncharacteristically quiet.

Alexander didn't move away. Slowly, deliberately, he turned on the berth, his amber eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made her pulse thunder against her ribs. In the cramped compartment, their faces were barely six inches apart. His gaze dropped to her mouth, lingering on her lips with raw, unmasked hunger.

"You're shaking, Sienna," Alexander whispered, using her first name for the first time in four years.

"I am not shaking, Alexander," she defied in a breathless rasp, refusing to back away, her emerald eyes blazing.

"Your heart is hammering so loud I can hear it over the train wheels," he murmured, his hand reaching out, his large, calloused fingers gently cupping the side of her jaw. His thumb brushed over her cheekbone with devastating tenderness.

Sienna’s breath hitched. Every instinct screamed at her to draw her weapon, to shove him away, to reassert the four-year wall of hostility that kept her safe. But the searing heat of his skin against hers was an inferno that threatened to consume every defense she had ever built.

"Alexander..." she whispered, a warning and a plea all at once.

"Tell me to stop, Locke," Alexander growled softly, leaning in until his lips brushed against the corner of hers. "Tell me you don't feel this. Tell me you haven't wanted to tear my clothes off every single day since Monaco."

"I hate you," she panted, her fingers clutching the front of his jeans instead of pushing him away.

"Good," Alexander whispered against her lips. "Because I'm completely obsessed with you."

As the train hurtled through the snowbound darkness of the Arlberg Pass, the intimate silence inside compartment 12 was suddenly shattered by heavy, hurried footsteps in the corridor outside.

The harsh clatter of boots against the metal floorboards stopped right outside their door. A sharp, authoritative fist pounded three times against the frosted glass panel.

"Österreichische Bundespolizei! Passkontrolle! Open the door!" a deep German voice barked.

Sienna’s hand instinctively dropped toward the suppressed Glock concealed beneath the leather berth. Her emerald eyes shot to Alexander, razor-sharp with tactical calculation.

"Two officers," Alexander whispered, his voice barely a breath. "If we shoot them on an Austrian train, our cover as British honeymooners dies before we reach Vienna."

"Then what's the play, Hunt?" she whispered back, her body coiled like a spring.

Alexander didn't answer with words. In one fluid, devastating motion, he reached out, grabbed Sienna by the waist, and hauled her off the leather berth, slamming her back against the wooden corridor wall right beside the frosted glass.

Before she could draw breath to protest, Alexander’s mouth crashed down over hers.

His hands tangled violently into her dark auburn hair, pulling her head back as his lips parted hers with raw, demanding hunger. His tongue swept deep into her mouth, tasting of winter mint, adrenaline, and pure masculine heat, while his broad, muscular chest pressed her firmly against the vibrating wall.

Sienna’s mind short-circuited. For a split second, shock paralyzed her limbs; then, the sheer, intoxicating inferno of his touch detonated through her veins. Her hands didn't push him away; they gripped his bare shoulders, her fingers digging into his muscled skin as a breathless, ragged whimper escaped her throat.

Alexander unlocked the door latch with one hand, letting the compartment door slide open two inches while continuing to devour her mouth with breathless, possessive fury.

The Austrian border patrol officer slid the door open, his flashlight beam cutting into the room—only to freeze in stunned embarrassment.

Alexander slowly broke the kiss, keeping Sienna pinned beneath him, his chest heaving, his amber eyes flashing with dark, annoyed irritation as he glared over his bare shoulder at the officer.

"Do you mind, officer?" Alexander growled in a perfect, arrogant upper-class British accent, his arm wrapped tightly around Sienna's waist. "My wife and I are on our honeymoon, and we paid for privacy. Is there an emergency, or do you always barge in on newlyweds?"

Beside him, Sienna played her part with breathtaking perfection. She buried her flushed face into the hollow of Alexander's neck, gasping softly, her hands clutching his bare ribs as if embarrassed by the intrusion.

The border guard’s face turned bright crimson. He quickly lowered his flashlight, fumbling with his belt. "Entschuldigung... apologies, sir. Routine security check following the Geneva incident. Enjoy your journey."

The guard pulled the door shut, locking the latch, his boots retreating quickly down the corridor.

Inside the compartment, the silence rushed back in—thick, heavy, and combustible.

Alexander didn't let her go. He remained pressed against her, his hips cradled against hers, his amber eyes burning into her soul with a dark, primal hunger that terrified her.

"Good performance, Locke," Alexander whispered, his voice trembling slightly with suppressed passion.

Sienna looked up at him, her lips swollen, her chest rising and falling violently against his. "That wasn't a performance, Alexander. And you know it."
