Chapter 2

The Black Cathedral

Married to the Mafia King · Camilla Vance · 5 min read

The morning dawned cold and grey over Chicago, but St. Jude’s Cathedral was ablaze with the light of three thousand white candles.

The gothic cathedral was an imposing monument of vaulted stone arches, stained-glass saints, and soaring buttresses. Today, however, it felt less like a house of God and more like the throne room of an emperor.

Over four hundred guests packed the mahogany pews—every capo, underboss, and made man from the five ruling syndicates of the Midwest, alongside corrupt politicians, federal judges, and high-society elites who danced on the mafia’s strings. Armed guards dressed in bespoke suits stood every ten feet along the stone aisles, their hands folded over their lapels, concealed weapons ready at the slightest sign of betrayal.

At the front of the altar stood Nikolai Rossi.

He was a terrifying vision of dark majesty. He wore a midnight-black tuxedo tailored to his massive athletic frame, a white silk cravat, and the diamond-encrusted Rossi signet ring gleaming on his hand. His emerald eyes were fixed on the heavy double oak doors at the back of the nave, waiting with predatory stillness.

Beside him, Marco checked his platinum watch and whispered, "Ten minutes late, brother. Do you think the little viper slit her wrists to avoid the vows?"

"She has too much fire to die quietly," Nikolai replied, his voice calm, steady, and certain. "She is coming."

As if summoned by his will, the heavy bronze bells in the cathedral tower began to toll with a deep, echoing resonance that rattled the stained-glass windows.

The double doors swung open.

A collective, stunned gasp rippled across the cathedral.

Francesca Moretti stood in the grand archway.

She had refused the traditional white bridal gown. She had thrown the lace veil onto the dressing room floor and stamped on it with her heels. Instead, she walked down the stone aisle wearing a show-stopping, custom corseted gown of blood-red silk.

The gown clung to her hourglass curves like a second skin, the neckline plunging daringly to reveal the creamy swell of her breasts, while the skirt flowed behind her in a dramatic, sweeping cascade of crimson. Her raven-black curls tumbled down her bare shoulders in wild, sensual waves, and her hazel eyes burned with defiant, unyielding flame.

She held no flowers. She wore no jewelry. She walked alone down the hundred-foot aisle, without an uncle or a brother to give her away, her spine straight as a lance, her chin held high as if she were marching to war rather than her wedding.

Nikolai’s breath caught in his throat.

His green eyes widened, flaring with an untamed, feral hunger that made the muscles in his jaw twitch. A slow, dangerous smile curved his sculpted lips.

*A queen of blood and fire.*

Francesca mounted the altar steps, stopping three feet from him. The scent of sweet jasmine and defiant adrenaline radiated from her skin, meeting his scent of cedar, tobacco, and rain.

"A red dress for your wedding, little viper?" Nikolai murmured, his deep baritone carrying softly over the hushed congregation.

"White is for innocents and victims, Don Rossi," Francesca replied, her voice loud, clear, and steady for all four hundred guests to hear. "I am neither. Red is the color of the blood your family spilled, and the blood you will pay if you ever try to break me."

A ripple of nervous murmurs passed through the made men in the front pews. Insulting the Don on his wedding altar was a death sentence.

Nikolai didn't strike her. Instead, a rich, dark laugh rumbled from his massive chest.

"God, you are magnificent," he rasped, stepping closer until his broad frame swallowed her view of the church. "I wouldn't have you any other way."

The aging Archbishop, sweating profusely beneath his gold vestments, began the ancient Latin liturgy with trembling hands. The words blurred past Francesca’s ears—a haze of holy incantations binding two ancient crime dynasties in the eyes of God and the law.

Then came the syndicate vows.

Marco stepped forward, carrying a silver tray holding a ceremonial stiletto with an obsidian blade and two heavy platinum wedding bands set with blood-red rubies.

Nikolai picked up the stiletto. Without hesitation, he drew the sharp tip across the fleshy palm of his left hand, a clean line of dark crimson blood welling immediately to the surface.

He held the blade out to Francesca, his emerald eyes boring into hers. "Give me your hand, Francesca."

Francesca met his stare. Without a single flicker of fear, she took the blade, pressing the cold steel into her own palm, slicing a thin crimson line across her skin. She dropped the knife onto the silver tray with a sharp clatter.

Nikolai reached out and took her bleeding hand in his. He pressed their open palms flush together, their blood mingling in warm, sticky permanence.

"With this blood, I claim you," Nikolai swore, his voice echoing off the vaulted stone ceilings like thunder. "My life for yours. My blade to defend you. My kingdom to share with you. You are the Queen of the Rossi Syndicate. Anyone who touches you will be fed to the dogs."

Francesca felt the searing heat of his skin, the thrum of his pulse mixing with hers.

"With this blood, I bind myself," she responded, her voice trembling slightly under the weight of the ancient oath. "I accept your kingdom, Nikolai Rossi. But cross me, and my blade will be the one in your heart."

"A fair contract," Nikolai smiled darkly.

He picked up the platinum ring and slid it onto her left ring finger. It was heavy, cold, and fit her with terrifying perfection. Francesca took his ring and pushed it onto his finger over his scarred knuckle.

"By the power vested in me," the Archbishop squeaked, his voice cracking, "I pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride."

Francesca braced herself, expecting a cold, formal brush of lips to conclude the transaction.

She was completely, devastatingly wrong.

Nikolai didn't hesitate. His large, blood-stained hand slid around the nape of her neck, his fingers tangling into her thick dark curls, angling her head back. His other arm locked around the small of her back, yanking her flush against his massive, muscular frame with ruthless strength.

Before she could draw a breath, his mouth crashed down on hers.

Francesca gasped into the kiss, and Nikolai seized the opening instantly. His tongue swept inside her mouth, hot, demanding, tasting of dark mint and iron, claiming her with a fierce, possessive hunger that stole every coherent thought from her mind.

It wasn't a wedding kiss; it was an act of absolute conquest.

He held her so tightly she could feel the hard, unyielding ridge of his desire pressing against her lower belly through the crimson silk. The heat of him, the intoxicating taste of him, sent a violent, shocking jolt of pure liquid fire straight through Francesca's veins. Her knees went weak. Despite herself, her hand came up to clutch at the lapels of his tuxedo to keep from falling.

When Nikolai finally broke the kiss, his breathing was ragged, his green eyes burning with triumphant, unholy fire.

He leaned down until his lips brushed her shell-pink ear, whispering in a low, gravelly rasp:

"Welcome to hell, my beautiful wife. Tonight, you belong to me."
