Chapter 3
The Fortress on Lake Michigan
Married to the Mafia King · Camilla Vance · 6 min read
The Rossi estate stood on the bluffs overlooking Lake Michigan, twenty miles north of the city.
It wasn't merely a mansion; it was a modern fortress. High wrought-iron gates reinforced with steel armor, razor wire concealed behind manicured hedges, and surveillance towers monitoring every square foot of the twenty-acre grounds. Inside the gates, black-clad soldiers with tactical submachine guns patrolled the perimeter with trained German shepherds.
The black armored Maybach rolled to a stop beneath the grand stone portico.
A chauffeur opened the door, and Nikolai stepped out into the chilly lakeside wind. He turned, extending a broad, ringed hand to help Francesca down.
Francesca ignored his hand entirely. Gathering the heavy crimson silk train of her gown in one fist, she stepped out on her own, her chin lifted high, her hazel eyes scanning the imposing stone facade of her new prison.
Nikolai’s mouth twitched with dry amusement, his hand dropping back to his pocket. "Still determined to do everything the hard way, I see."
"I don't need your charity, Don Rossi, and I don't need your hand," she replied coldly, her stilettos clicking against the limestone steps.
"Inside these walls, Francesca, you will call me Nikolai," he rumbled, following her through the grand double oak doors that were opened by two silent, stone-faced guards.
The interior of the fortress was breathtaking—a seamless blend of brutalist concrete, dark walnut, and palatial Italian marble. A sweeping curved staircase led up to the private living quarters, while floor-to-ceiling glass walls on the main floor showcased the turbulent, dark waves of Lake Michigan crashing against the rocky bluffs below.
Standing in the grand foyer was an older woman with silver hair pulled into a severe bun, wearing an immaculate black wool dress.
"Welcome home, Don Nikolai," the woman said with a crisp, respectful nod. "Donna Francesca."
"This is Elena, the housekeeper," Nikolai said, shrugging off his heavy overcoat and handing it to a waiting guard. "She managed my father’s household, and she manages mine. If you need anything, tell her. If you wish to redesign the decor, you have an unlimited line of credit. The only rule in this house is that you do not step past the security perimeter without my personal escort."
Francesca turned to face him, crossing her arms over the corset of her gown. "And if I choose to take a walk along the beach?"
"Then my guards will shoot the locks off your shoes," Nikolai answered flatly, his green eyes devoid of humor. "You are the wife of the Rossi Don now, Francesca. Every rival syndicate from Detroit to New York would love nothing more than to put a bullet between your eyes to weaken my rule. You stay inside the wire."
Francesca’s jaw clenched. "So I am your prisoner."
"You are my queen," Nikolai corrected, stepping into her personal space, his towering height swallowing the light above them. "And queens do not wander unattended through war zones."
He turned to Elena. "Have Donna Francesca’s belongings moved into the master wing. We will dine at eight."
"Right away, Don Nikolai," Elena bowed slightly, gesturing toward the grand staircase. "Donna Francesca, if you will follow me."
Two hours later, Francesca had stripped out of the blood-red wedding gown, taking a scalding hot shower in the palatial marble bathroom of the master suite. The suite was vast, featuring a king-sized four-poster bed made of hand-carved ebony, a roaring stone fireplace, and panoramic views of the stormy lake.
She dressed in a tailored black silk pantsuit and high heels, styling her dark hair into a sleek, professional ponytail. She looked at her reflection in the gilded vanity mirror—her lips still swollen from Nikolai’s savage wedding kiss, the red ruby on her finger a glittering brand of her ownership.
She reached down, opening her vintage leather makeup case. Hidden beneath the velvet lining was a small, razor-sharp silver folding knife her father had given her on her eighteenth birthday. She slipped it into the inside pocket of her blazer, right over her ribs.
*If he thinks I will submit like a broken dog, he is going to bleed.*
At precisely eight o'clock, she descended to the formal dining room.
The room was lit only by tall black candles in silver candelabras and the dancing amber light of a massive fireplace. A twenty-foot mahogany dining table was laid with crystal, fine china, and silver cloches.
Nikolai was already seated at the head of the table.
He had changed into a dark charcoal dress shirt, unbuttoned at the collar, with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms to reveal the corded muscle and dark ink tattoos of crowned vipers coiling around his wrists. He was drinking a glass of deep ruby Amarone wine, reading a financial manifest.
When Francesca walked in, his emerald eyes lifted from the paper.
A slow, appreciative gleam flashed in his gaze as he took in her black silk suit. He set his wine glass down with a soft click.
"No dress tonight, wife?" he murmured, leaning back in his high-backed leather chair.
"Dresses are inconvenient when you're preparing for battle," Francesca said coldly, pulling out the chair at the opposite end of the long table, deliberately seating herself as far away from him as physically possible.
Nikolai didn't flinch. He raised one hand and snapped his fingers.
Two servers immediately entered from the kitchen, serving plates of handmade wild boar ragu and fresh crusty bread before disappearing back into the shadows.
"You sit twenty feet away from me like you expect me to lunge across the table," Nikolai said, slicing a piece of bread.
"I know what you are, Nikolai," Francesca replied, picking up her silver fork, keeping her eyes fixed on his. "You're a butcher who traded twenty lives for a piece of paper and a ring. You took my family's legacy."
Nikolai set his fork down. The casual, relaxed posture vanished in an instant, replaced by that terrifying, lethal predator who ruled the city.
He stood up from his chair.
Slowly, his boots thudding against the polished hardwood, he walked down the length of the twenty-foot table until he stopped directly beside her chair.
"Your uncle Alberto is a coward who gambled away your father's blood, Francesca," Nikolai said, his baritone dropping to a dangerous rumble. "Your father, Vito Moretti, was a man of honor. I respected him. When he was killed, Alberto took control and turned your syndicate into a drug-running, human-trafficking disgrace. I didn't steal your legacy. I cleansed it."
Francesca’s breath caught in her throat. "My father was murdered by your family!"
"Your father was betrayed by Alberto!" Nikolai snapped, leaning down, slamming both palms onto the table on either side of her, trapping her between his arms. His face was inches from hers, his green eyes blazing with raw, terrifying truth. "Alberto cut the brake lines on Vito’s car in Lake Forest four years ago so he could take the Don's seat! I have the mechanic's confession in my safe right now!"
Francesca froze, the room spinning around her. "You're lying..."
"I don't lie to my wife," Nikolai growled softly. He reached down, his large hand sliding inside her blazer with lightning speed. Before she could react, his fingers closed around the silver folding knife hidden in her pocket, slipping it free.
He flipped the blade open in front of her face, testing the edge with his thumb.
"A pretty little blade," he murmured, his breath hot and intoxicating against her cheek. "Were you planning on using this on me tonight, Francesca?"
Francesca swallowed hard, refusing to cower. "If you touch me without my consent, I will use whatever I can find."
Nikolai stared at her, his emerald eyes darkening until they were almost black with unyielding desire.
Slowly, deliberately, he turned the knife around, placing the wooden handle into her trembling palm, pressing the cold steel tip directly against his throat, right over his pulsing carotid artery.
"Then do it, little viper," Nikolai whispered, his voice a low, seductive dare that made her core clench. "Cut me. Spill my blood. But if you don't kill me with the first strike... I am going to bend you over this table and show you what it feels like to be completely claimed."
