Chapter 2

The King's Decree

Mated to the Lycan King · Seraphina Black · 5 min read

The Great Banqueting Hall was plunged into a deafening, suffocating silence.

Five hundred highborn Lycan lords, noble ladies, and hardened war captains sat frozen in their seats, their faces pale with disbelieving shock. For three centuries, their immortal King had looked upon the most glamorous princesses of Europe and the Americas with utter boredom. Yet now, the sovereign of Drakonspire was kneeling on the wine-stained stones before a scullery slave girl, looking at her as if she were a fallen goddess.

Lord Malakor remained on his knees, clutching his fractured wrist, his eyes bulging with humiliation and rage.

"My King..." Malakor hissed through gritted teeth. "She is a slave! A nameless hybrid captured on the border! She wears the iron collar of property!"

Valerius’s ice-blue eyes shifted to Malakor for a fraction of a second. The look was so cold, so devoid of mercy, that the seasoned general shrank backward, terrified for his life.

"She wears it no longer," Valerius rumbled, his voice carrying the finality of an executioner's blade.

Valerius turned back to Clara. Moving with exquisite, agonizing slowness, giving her time to understand that he meant no harm, he reached out. His large, calloused hands—hands that had snapped the necks of rival warlords—closed around the thick iron slave collar bolted around her throat.

With a simple, fluid flex of his raw Lycan strength, Valerius shattered the hardened iron.

*SNAP!*

The heavy metal band broke in two, clattering harmlessly to the marble flagstones.

Clara gasped, her trembling fingers rising to touch the tender, bruised skin of her neck where the collar had bitten into her flesh for twelve years. For the first time since childhood, she was free of the iron.

Before she could process the shock, Valerius slid his powerful arms beneath her trembling knees and back, lifting her into his arms as if she were made of spun glass. He gathered her against his massive chest, wrapping his heavy midnight-velvet mantle around her frail, soot-stained body, tucking her head against the hollow of his neck.

The scent of him enveloped her like a fortress: crisp mountain snow, crushed winter juniper, dark leather, and the intoxicating, furnace-hot musk of an ancient Alpha King.

Clara’s heart hammered against her ribs, but beneath the fear, that celestial bond pulsed with a warmth so deep, so profound, it melted away twelve years of starvation and misery.

"Alpha Valerius, this is madness!" Council Elder Thorne shouted from the front row, rising to his feet. "Under the ancient Charter of Drakonspire, a slave cannot set foot in the royal quarters! The bloodline of the Frost Kings must remain pure!"

Valerius stopped at the foot of the throne dais, turning slowly to face his council.

The kinetic force of his royal aura expanded across the room like a physical avalanche. Benches rattled, glass shattered, and forty highborn elders slammed their faces onto the tables, groaning under the suffocating pressure of his will.

"Hear my decree, lords of the North," Valerius announced, his baritone booming through the obsidian hall like rolling thunder. "The Charter was written by my ancestors to protect this realm. But the Moon Goddess herself has chosen this woman to sit upon the White Bone Throne beside me. Clara Rivers is my fated mate. The Supreme Empress of Drakonspire."

He swept his ice-blue gaze across the trembling room, lingering on Malakor.

"From this moment forward, Clara Rivers is under the sovereign protection of the crown," Valerius declared. "Anyone who speaks her name with insolence will be flayed alive. Anyone who attempts to lay a hand upon her flesh will have their entire bloodline erased from the history of this realm."

Without waiting for another word, Valerius turned and carried his bride through the double obsidian doors, ascending the private winding marble staircase toward the highest tower of the palace, leaving the empire reeling in the wake of his decree.

The ascent to the High Tower suite was an agonizing, breathless blur of speed and disbelief. Valerius carried Clara up the private spiral staircase of polished black granite, taking the steps three at a time with effortless stamina, his arms cradling her as if she were made of delicate ice crystals. Behind them, the stunned murmur of five hundred nobles echoed through the corridors, but Valerius never glanced back.

Whenever Clara’s trembling hands brushed against his muscular throat, a visible shiver rippled through the King’s massive frame. He looked down at her with an intensity so fierce, so protective, it brought tears to her violet eyes.

"You're shaking, Clara," Valerius murmured softly, his baritone rumbling through his broad chest into hers.

"I am terrified, Your Majesty," she whispered, her voice barely louder than the winter wind outside. "The lords in that hall... they will kill you for this. They will never accept a slave as their Queen."

Valerius stopped on the marble landing outside the royal suite, turning to face her fully. He looked down at the pale, beautiful face of the woman nestled against his heart, his thumb gently smoothing back a soot-stained lock of her silver-blonde hair.

"Let them try, Clara," Valerius growled softly, his ice-blue eyes flashing with lethal, unshakeable certainty. "For three hundred years, I have bled on every battlefield in this continent to keep those spoiled lords safe in their silk. My throne was built on blood, and I rule by divine right of the Moon Goddess. If Malakor or any elder in this palace dares question my choice, I will tear their tongues from their throats and hang their bodies from the glacier walls. You are not a slave anymore. You are my Queen. And the entire world will bow to you."

He pushed open the heavy double oak doors, carrying his bride into the luxurious sanctuary of the High Tower, leaving the whispers of treason behind in the cold.

Carried in the King’s arms through the vaulted stone halls of Drakonspire, Clara looked up at the towering stained-glass windows depicting the ancient victories of the Frost dynasty. Every guard along the corridor dropped their halberds to the stone, bowing their heads in stunned deference as their sovereign passed. The terrified kitchen slave who had cleaned soot from cauldrons was being carried to the highest tower in the realm by the man who owned the continent. She buried her face in the thick velvet of his mantle, feeling the deep, reassuring vibration of his voice whispering that she was safe, that she was cherished, and that no hand would ever strike her again.

As the heavy doors of the tower closed, locking the noise of the world outside, Clara took a deep breath of the mountain cedar air. The King of the North had given her back her freedom, and she would stand beside him as his equal through whatever storm lay ahead.

Every shadow of doubt was banished by the steady, protective warmth radiating from his chest. She had entered Drakonspire as a slave condemned to the ovens; she was ascending to the heavens as the bride of an immortal sovereign. Looking up at the obsidian stars, Clara knew her life had found its true purpose. Valerius had torn down her chains, and she would stand beside him to reign over the empire.
