Chapter 3
In the High Tower

Warmth. Unbelievable, fragrant, luxurious warmth enveloped Clara when she opened her eyes.
She was resting in the center of a massive four-poster bed carved of white birch and silver filigree, draped in curtains of sheer ivory silk and heavy blankets of Arctic fox fur. The bed was softer than a summer cloud, smelling of dried lavender, clean snow, and mountain cedar.
Clara sat up slowly, clutching the silk sheet to her chest.
She was in the High Tower suite—a palatial circular chamber perched on the highest spire of Drakonspire, accessible only by a private elevator and the King’s personal stairway. Towering arched windows of reinforced crystal framed a breathtaking panorama of snow-capped volcanic peaks, glaciers glowing blue in the morning sun, and the dancing violet ribbons of the northern lights.
She looked down at herself. The filthy, soot-stained scullery tunic was gone. Someone had bathed her in warm rosewater and dressed her in a floor-length gown of midnight-blue velvet embroidered with silver snowflakes along the cuffs.
On the cedar table before the crackling fireplace sat a silver tray with warm blackberry pastries, sliced venison, and a crystal pitcher of mountain spring water.
A soft knock sounded at the double oak doors.
The door swung open, and King Valerius stepped inside.
He had shed his ceremonial armor. He wore dark tailored trousers and a fitted charcoal wool tunic unbuttoned at the throat, revealing the corded muscle of his neck and a glimpse of an ancient silver torque collar resting against his collarbone. He carried a velvet jewelry box in his large, scarred hand.
The moment his crystalline ice-blue eyes locked onto hers, that golden-violet cord in Clara’s chest tightened, pulling her toward him with hypnotic intensity.
Valerius closed the door quietly behind him. He walked across the fur rug with slow, measured strides, his predatory posture gentling as he approached the bed.
"You're awake," he said softly, his deep baritone rolling through the quiet room like warm velvet. "Did you sleep well, Clara?"
"I... I have never slept in a bed before, Your Majesty," Clara whispered, her voice trembling. "I always slept on straw near the ovens."
Valerius’s jaw tightened, a flash of murderous fury darkening his ice-blue eyes before he forced himself to calm his wolf. He stopped beside the bed, looking down at her with an intensity that burned hotter than the fireplace.
"You will never sleep on straw again, Clara," he murmured, his voice dropping into a low, husky register that made her toes curl. "And you will call me Valerius. To the world, I am the King. To you, I am only yours."
He reached out, his large, warm hand hesitating for a fraction of a second before gently cupping the side of her face. His calloused thumb brushed the soft curve of her cheek, sending delicious, electric shivers cascading straight down her spine.
"Why are you so kind to me, Valerius?" Clara whispered, searching his striking, rugged features. "In the kitchens, the overseers told us you were a monster who bathed in the blood of rebels."
A faint, wry smile touched Valerius’s chiseled lips. "I have killed many men in war, Clara. But I am not a monster to the woman the Moon Goddess forged for my soul. For three hundred years, my inner beast has roamed these frozen peaks in total darkness, waiting for the one scent that could bring him peace."
He sat on the edge of the mattress, his weight dipping the bed slightly. He reached around her, his fingers gently brushing the silver-blonde hair from her back.
"Turn around, Clara," he urged softly. "Show me what you carry on your shoulder."
Clara hesitated, then turned her back to him, parting the midnight-blue velvet gown.
Rested between her shoulder blades, etched into her smooth, porcelain skin, was a faint, silvery-white birthmark in the shape of a blooming crescent moon surrounded by eight starlit thorns.
Valerius’s breath caught in his throat. His warm fingers traced the birthmark with heartbreaking reverence.
"It is real," he whispered, his voice trembling with awe. "The Crescent of the First Queen. You are not a hybrid slave, Clara. You are the direct descendant of the Silver Queen of the South, whose bloodline vanished during the Great Purge."
He turned her back to face him, his ice-blue eyes burning with fierce, unyielding devotion.
"Malakor and the council thought they were holding a stray dog in their scullery," Valerius growled softly, placing the velvet box in her lap. "They are going to learn that they were hosting their rightful Empress."
When Valerius clicked open the velvet jewelry box, Clara gasped in stunned, reverent awe.
Resting on the black silk cushion was an antique torque necklace of woven platinum and starlight diamonds, centered around an enormous, flawless teardrop moonstone that glowed with an ethereal violet luminescence.
"This belonged to Queen Danielle, the First Mother of the Lycan race," Valerius whispered, his voice thick with reverence as he lifted the heavy platinum torque from the box. "For two hundred years, it has sat locked in the royal vault, waiting for the woman whose blood could awaken the stone."
He leaned forward, his large, warm hands gently parting Clara’s silver-blonde hair, fastening the cool platinum collar around her throat.
The moment the moonstone touched the skin above her collarbone, a brilliant flash of violet light pulsed through the room. The stone warmed instantly against her flesh, humming in direct harmonic resonance with the birthmark between her shoulder blades. Clara felt a surge of ancient, divine energy rush through her veins, washing away the lingering exhaustion of her past, filling her soul with the regal dignity of an empress.
Valerius looked at her, his crystalline ice-blue eyes shining with tears of raw, overwhelming adoration. He knelt before the bed, taking her small hands in his, pressing his forehead against her knuckles with breathless humility.
"You have suffered for twelve years in the dark of my palace, Clara," the immortal King choked out, his baritone trembling with an emotion he had never shown to a living soul. "I cannot erase the scars of your past. But I swear on the honor of my bloodline that every day of my remaining immortal life will be dedicated to protecting your smile, worshipping your heart, and honoring your reign."
Tears spilled down Clara’s cheeks as she leaned down, framing his sculpted, rugged face with her hands. "You saved me, Valerius. You gave me back my soul."
Looking into the mirror above the dressing table, Clara touched the heavy platinum torque around her neck, marveling at the glowing violet moonstone. The reflection looking back at her was no longer a broken captive, but an empress crowned in starlight. With King Valerius standing tall and protective beside her, she knew she had the strength to face whatever trials awaited them.
Standing beside Valerius as the winter sun touched the glaciers, Clara felt the power of the First Queen thrumming through her veins, ready to claim her destiny.
The ancient moonstone pulsed softly against her collarbone, a sacred reminder that her destiny was written in the stars, forever intertwined with the King who had claimed her heart. She had found her home, her king, and her eternal love.
