Chapter 1

The Blood Moon Rejection

Rejected by My Alpha · Lyra Thorne · 5 min read

The night of the Blood Moon Solstice was supposed to be the moment Serena Vance’s life finally began.

High in the frozen pine forests of the Montana Rockies, the Blood Moon Pack’s sacred stone amphitheater was illuminated by towering bonfires of white cedar and pitch pine. The crimson full moon hung heavy in the midnight sky, casting a bloody, supernatural luminescence across five hundred gathered werewolves. For an unmated wolf turning twenty, the solstice was sacred. It was the night the Moon Goddess Selene revealed the invisible, celestial threads of the mate bond.

Serena stood at the foot of the raised stone dais, her fingers clutching the hem of her simple, faded cotton dress.

At twenty, Serena was the lowest-ranked member of the Blood Moon Pack. After her parents—humble border scouts—had died in a rogue border raid twelve years ago, the pack council had stripped her of her family's land and relegated her to the status of a kitchen omega. She spent her days scrubbing flagstones, gutting elk, and enduring the cruel taunts of the pack's highborn wolves. Yet she was stunningly beautiful in a way that provoked the envy of the council's daughters: silken platinum-blonde hair that cascaded in waves to her waist, luminous violet-blue eyes fringed with thick dark lashes, and skin as smooth and pale as freshly fallen snow.

A sudden, violent vibration struck Serena’s chest like a silver spear.

Her inner wolf, normally quiet and timid, threw back her head and howled. The air in the amphitheater suddenly exploded with the intoxicating scents of crushed pine needles, dark leather, and woodsmoke. A golden, electric cord materialized in her soul, pulling her gaze toward the top of the dais.

Standing beside the pack Alpha was Tyler Cole—the twenty-four-year-old Alpha heir of the Blood Moon Pack.

Tyler was tall, broad-shouldered, with golden-brown hair, arrogant amber eyes, and a cruel, handsome smirk that made pack maidens swoon. The moment their eyes met across the torchlit amphitheater, the mate bond snapped into place with the force of a thunderclap.

The crowd fell dead silent. Whispers of shock rippled through the gathered wolves.

"An omega?" someone hissed from the front row. "The future Alpha is mated to a kitchen servant?"

Serena’s heart pounded with a fragile, desperate hope. The Moon Goddess didn't make mistakes. Perhaps the years of starvation and beatings were finally over. Perhaps she was finally going to be cherished.

She took three trembling steps toward the dais. "Tyler..." she whispered softly.

Tyler didn't smile. His amber eyes hardened into shards of pure, venomous disgust. He looked at her simple dress, her calloused hands, and the faded bruises along her collarbone as if she were a diseased stray dog that had wandered into his temple.

Standing beside Tyler was Camille Dubois—the spoiled, glamorous daughter of the pack's wealthiest council elder, dressed in custom scarlet silk and diamond ear cuffs. Camille slipped her manicured hand into the crook of Tyler's arm, sneering down at Serena.

"Did you really think the Moon Goddess would give our pack an omega Luna, Tyler?" Camille whispered loudly enough for the entire council to hear. "She has no dowry. No political bloodline. She's a useless weakling who can't even shift into a warrior."

Tyler stepped to the edge of the stone platform, towering over Serena, his voice magnified by Alpha aura as it boomed across the amphitheater.

"I am the heir to the strongest pack in the Rockies," Tyler announced, his voice cold, merciless, and absolute. "My Luna must be a highborn warrior who commands respect and brings armies to our borders. I will not taint my bloodline or embarrass my father's council with a filthy kitchen omega."

He raised his right hand toward the blood moon, his claws extending, his eyes flashing yellow with cruel finality.

"I, Alpha Heir Tyler Cole of the Blood Moon Pack, formally reject you, Serena Vance, as my mate and future Luna. You are nothing to me. You will never be anything to me."

The words struck Serena with the physical force of a sledgehammer.

A tearing, agonizing pain ripped through the center of her chest as the mate bond was violently severed. Her inner wolf shrieked in agony, curling into a whimpering ball as spiritual frostbite tore through her soul. Blood bubbled at the corners of Serena’s lips, and she collapsed onto her knees against the freezing stone flagstones, gasping for air that felt like broken glass in her lungs.

Around her, the pack burst into cruel, mocking laughter.

"Get up, omega!" Camille taunted from the dais, pressing a possessive, gloved hand against Tyler's chest. "Take your rags and clear out of our sight before the Alpha has you whipped!"

Tyler looked down at Serena’s crumpled body with utter indifference. "Under pack law, a rejected omega without family has no standing in our territory. Pack Enforcers, strip her of her pack crest and throw her beyond the northern border. If she sets foot in Blood Moon territory again, execute her on sight."

Two massive, armored enforcers grabbed Serena by her hair and arms, dragging her across the sharp gravel as she wept, her spirit broken, her soul bleeding.

As the two enforcers dragged Serena down the winding mountain trail away from the warmth of the fires, she looked back over her bruised shoulder one last time. Tyler stood at the center of the dais, laughing with Camille as servants poured goblets of spiced wine, entirely indifferent to the life he had just discarded into the cold. Twelve years of loyalty, twelve years of quietly bearing every insult and blow, meant nothing to him. A spark of cold, incandescent fury ignited deep beneath the pain in Serena's shattered chest: she had survived the death of her parents, she had survived twelve years of cruelty, and she would survive this. If the Moon Goddess allowed her to live through this night, Tyler Cole would regret the breath he drew to speak her rejection.

They hauled her four miles through the freezing blizzard to the jagged mountain ridge marking the northern border—the boundary separating Blood Moon land from the terrifying, uncharted territory of the Shadow Ridge Pack. They hurled her off the dirt embankment into a six-foot snowdrift, spitting on her face before turning their backs and returning to the warmth of their fires.

Serena lay face-down in the freezing snow, the crimson moonlight filtering through the frosted pine branches above. The cold seeped into her bones, numbing her bruised limbs, slowing her heartbeat to a sluggish thud.

Her vision blurred. The pain of the broken bond was so unbearable she wanted nothing more than to close her eyes and let the winter freeze swallow her soul.

"I'm sorry," she whispered into the empty snow, a single crystalline tear freezing on her cheek. "I'm so sorry..."

Suddenly, the deep, primeval silence of the winter forest was shattered by a sound that made the frozen earth tremble.

A howl.

It was not the high-pitched yip of a Blood Moon scout. It was a deep, guttural, earth-shattering roar that shook the snow from the pine needles—a roar of pure, untamed Alpha power that echoed from the obsidian peaks of Shadow Ridge.

And coming through the swirling blizzard, moving with the terrifying, silent speed of a phantom predator, was a massive shadow whose glowing molten-silver eyes burned brighter than the blood moon above.
