Chapter 3

In the Alpha's Den

Rejected by My Alpha · Lyra Thorne · 5 min read

Warmth. Deep, fragrant, overwhelming warmth was the first sensation that returned to Serena’s consciousness.

She stirred slowly, sinking into the softest bed she had ever known. Beneath her was a thick mattress topped with plush goose-down pillows and heavy blankets of charcoal cashmere and Arctic fox fur. The soothing crackle of a massive stone fireplace filled the room, sending the fragrant scents of burning cedar and pinon wood drifting through the air.

Serena opened her eyes, blinking against the warm, amber glow of firelight.

She was in a palatial master suite carved from dark obsidian stone and polished cedar timbers. Arched floor-to-ceiling windows framed a breathtaking view of snow-covered jagged peaks under a crisp sapphire sky. There were no iron cages. There were no damp cellars. On the low table beside the hearth sat a steaming bowl of venison broth, fresh blackberry bread, and a silver pitcher of mountain spring water.

She looked down at herself. Someone had washed the dirt and dried blood from her skin, dressed her in an oversized charcoal sweater of pure cashmere that fell to her mid-thigh, and wrapped her frostbitten feet in warm wool socks.

The heavy oak door clicked open.

Stepping into the room, carrying a fresh stack of split firewood, was Alpha Kaelen Blackwood.

He had shed his fur mantle and battle armor. He wore only dark tactical trousers and a fitted black thermal shirt that hugged the corded muscle of his broad chest and narrow waist. His dark raven hair was damp from a recent shower, falling in careless waves across his forehead, and his silver eyes immediately found hers.

The moment their gazes locked, that celestial silver thread in Serena’s chest tightened, pulling her toward him with hypnotic, magnetic force.

Kaelen set the logs beside the hearth with practiced, fluid grace. He wiped his hands on a clean linen cloth, then turned to face her, moving with the quiet, predatory authority of a lion in his own den.

"You're awake," he said softly, his deep baritone rolling through the quiet room like warm velvet. "How does your chest feel?"

Serena touched her collarbone. The jagged, blackened scar where Tyler Cole’s rejection mark had seared her flesh was gone. In its place was smooth, pale skin, glowing with a faint, iridescent silver sheen.

"It... it doesn't hurt anymore," Serena whispered, her voice hoarse. She looked up at him, her violet-blue eyes wide with wary confusion. "Why did you save me, Alpha Blackwood? In the Blood Moon Pack, omegas who are rejected are left to die. I have no wealth. I have no pack army to offer you."

Kaelen took two slow, measured strides toward the bed. The sheer size of him was overwhelming, yet there was no cruelty in his posture, only an unyielding, focused reverence that made her pulse flutter wildly. He stopped beside the mattress, towering over her, his silver eyes searching her face with an intensity that burned hotter than the fireplace.

"First of all, you will call me Kaelen," he murmured, his voice dropping into a low, husky register that made her toes curl beneath the blankets. "And second... you are not an omega, Serena."

Serena blinked, startled. "What? Of course I am. My wolf has always been weak and silent. I couldn't even shift during the full moon—"

"Your wolf wasn't weak, little bird," Kaelen interrupted gently, reaching out with agonizing slowness, giving her plenty of time to pull away. When she didn't, his large, warm hand cupped the side of her face. His calloused thumb brushed softly against her cheekbone, sending delicious, electric shivers cascading down her spine. "Your wolf was suppressed. The Blood Moon Pack put wolfsbane in the omega rations for twelve years to keep you docile. They knew what you were, and they were terrified of you."

Serena’s breath caught in her throat. "Terrified of me? Why?"

Kaelen leaned down until his face was barely inches from hers, his intoxicating scent of pine, frost, and dark masculine musk enveloping her completely.

"Because you carry the blood of the First Wolves, Serena," Kaelen growled softly, his silver eyes glowing with unbridled worship. "You are a Silver Moon Lycan. An ancient royal bloodline that predates every Alpha lineage in North America. When Tyler Cole rejected you, he didn't just throw away a mate; he committed treason against the Moon Goddess herself."

Serena stared at him in stunned silence. Tears pricked the corners of her eyes as twelve years of humiliation, starvation, and self-hatred flashed through her mind. All this time, she had believed she was broken, worthless, an accident of nature.

"He called me garbage," she whispered, a stray tear escaping her eyelashes. "He made the whole pack laugh at me."

Kaelen’s jaw hardened into lethal granite, his eyes darkening to the color of stormy steel. He wiped the tear from her cheek with heartbreaking tenderness, his thumb lingering over her lips.

"Tyler Cole is a dead man walking," Kaelen swore fiercely, his voice vibrating with absolute, demonic certainty. "He will kneel in the dirt and beg for your mercy before this winter is over. But until then... you are safe here. In this fortress, you are under my personal protection. No one touches you. No one questions you. And whatever you desire is yours."

He stepped back slightly, reaching for the bowl of venison broth and handing it to her with gentle care.

"Eat, Serena," he urged softly. "Regain your strength. Because tomorrow, we begin your training. And the entire world is going to witness the rise of the Silver Queen."

Later that afternoon, after finishing the venison broth, Serena walked over to the tall arched windows of the master suite. The view took her breath away. Below the obsidian cliffs, the Shadow Ridge village was a flourishing mountain settlement of stone lodges, warm smoke drifting from stone chimneys, and children playing safely in the snow under the watchful eyes of warrior patrols. There was no fear here. There was no desperate scavenging for scraps like the omegas endured in Blood Moon.

Kaelen walked up behind her, having changed into clean training gear. He didn't crowd her, keeping a respectful distance, yet his intoxicating scent of mountain pine and winter frost seemed to wrap around her like a protective shield.

"My pack was founded two hundred years ago by survivors of rogue purges, Serena," Kaelen explained softly, looking out over the valley. "We don't believe in treating any wolf like cattle. In Shadow Ridge, every soul contributes, and every soul is defended. But for twelve years, my inner beast has paced this balcony, refusing every political match, waiting for the one scent that could tame his rage."

He turned to look at her, his silver eyes softening with raw, unshielded emotion. "You are that scent, Serena. You are the piece of my soul that was missing."

Serena looked down at her hands, feeling a deep, profound healing spread through her heart. For the first time in her life, someone saw her not as a burden, but as a blessing.

With Kaelen by her side, Serena knew she would never have to bow her head in shame again. The Alpha had given her back her pride, and she would stand beside him as his equal.
