Chapter 1
The Blood Moon Awakening
The Alpha Twins' Mate · Scarlett Reed · 7 min read
The Blood Moon Solstice was the most sacred, charged night of the lunar cycle across the rugged crags of the Cascade Range.
High upon the plateau of Whispering Pines, a colossal bonfire of seasoned cedar and dry pine logs roared thirty feet into the starry midnight sky. Sparks spiraled upward like crimson fireflies, casting deep scarlet reflections across the faces of four hundred gathered wolves of the Silverpeak Pack. The heavy mountain air smelled of roasting venison, spiced mulled cider, melting pine resin, and the intoxicating, crackling pheromone hum of unmated wolves waiting for the goddess to reveal their destinies.
Freya Campbell stood at the outer perimeter of the celebration, deliberately tucked into the shadowy overhang of the apothecary pavilion.
At twenty-two, Freya was neither a fierce warrior sentinel nor a pampered daughter of the council elders. She was the pack's quiet herbalist and apothecary apprentice, spending her days in the misty mountain meadows gathering wild arnica, silver-moss, and winter wolfsbane to brew healing salves for wounded sentinels. With her soft waves of honey-blonde hair falling over her shoulders, slender curves hidden beneath a modest burgundy wool gown, and luminous violet-gray eyes, she had always preferred the peaceful quiet of dried herbs to the raucous politics of the central clearing.
Tonight, however, a strange, restless heat had been tingling beneath her skin since twilight. Her pulse beat in rapid, erratic rhythms against the hollow of her throat, and her inner wolf paced restlessly inside her mind, whining softly with an unbearable, aching anticipation.
Across the firelit clearing, standing upon the raised granite dais of the Alpha seat, were the twin rulers of the territory: Jaxson and Jaden Sterling.
At twenty-seven, the Sterling twins were legends of military power and territorial dominance throughout the northern territories. Born minutes apart, they ruled Silverpeak as co-Alphas—a formidable dual monarchy that had expanded pack territory across three mountain ranges and crushed five rogue rebellions. Yet while they shared an identical towering six-foot-four height, broad granite shoulders, and chiseled, predatory jawlines, they were as distinct as fire and ice.
Jaxson, the elder twin by three minutes, was a force of raw, unapologetic violence. He wore black tactical leather lined with bear fur, his jet-black hair shorn short at the sides, and his fierce amber eyes swept over the crowd with the restless, territorial hunger of a predator scenting prey. A broad bastard sword was strapped to his back, and his knuckles bore the hardened calluses of a warrior who settled disputes with his fists.
Beside him sat Jaden, the tactical mind of the pack. Clad in a dark charcoal tunic tailored over his broad muscular chest, Jaden possessed piercing storm-blue eyes that missed nothing. His dark hair was slightly longer, curling over the collar of his tunic, his aristocratic, handsome face an unreadable mask of calculated intelligence. Where Jax ruled by crushing frontal force, Jaden ruled by strategy, diplomacy, and lethal precision.
Between the brothers lay an unspoken, lifelong rivalry. They shared the throne, they shared command of the armies, but they competed fiercely in everything else—hunting, territory, and combat. For seven years, the pack elders had waited anxiously for the Moon Goddess to bestow mates upon them, terrified of the day when a female might choose one brother over the other and tear the pack in two.
Suddenly, the drums ceased.
High above the timberline, the full lunar disk slipped completely into the earth's shadow, turning a deep, luminous shade of celestial crimson. The Blood Moon had reached its zenith.
An ancient, sacred prayer rose from the gathered crowd. As the crimson light washed over the clearing, the northern wind abruptly shifted, howling down from the glacier peaks and sweeping directly through the apothecary pavilion before surging toward the Alpha dais.
The breeze caught the scent rising from Freya's heated skin.
It was not the ordinary scent of a mountain wolf. It was an ancient, intoxicating celestial bouquet of sweet night-blooming jasmine, crushed mountain heather, and warm, wild clover honey, laced with the electrifying, addictive pheromones of a female entering full lunar maturity.
The instant the scent struck the Alpha dais, the world fractured.
Both Jaxson and Jaden froze mid-breath.
Every muscle in their massive six-foot-four bodies locked into rigid, vibrating stone. Jax’s burning amber eyes dilated until they were nearly black, his nostrils flaring with predatory intensity. At his side, Jaden dropped the silver goblet in his hand; the chalice hit the flagstones with a hollow chime, spilling red wine across the granite steps.
Down in the shadows of the pavilion, an explosion of concussive golden fire detonated inside Freya’s chest.
Her inner wolf threw back its head and shrieked in primal, soul-shattering recognition. But the bond did not snap toward a single man. In a terrifying, miraculous burst of cosmic power, two separate, unbreakable golden cords of celestial fire lanced outward from her soul, crossing the courtyard in blinding arcs of light. One cord anchored into the wild, fiery chest of Jaxson; the second cord slammed with equal, bone-deep intensity into the cool, calculating heart of Jaden.
A triad mate bond.
It was a phenomenon of ancient myth—a sacred, three-way fated connection whispered of only in the oldest scrolls of the First Age, occurring once in ten thousand years when the Moon Goddess deemed a single female magnificent enough to command two sovereign Alphas simultaneously.
Jax was on his feet in a fraction of a second, his heavy combat boots slamming against the dais steps.
"Mine," Jax growled, his gravelly baritone vibrating across the clearing like rolling thunder, shaking the spruce boughs above.
"Ours," Jaden corrected in a deep, dangerously smooth rumble, already moving beside his brother, his storm-blue eyes locked onto the distant pavilion with an intensity that promised possession of body and soul.
The four hundred wolves in the clearing gasped, turning their heads as the two most feared warlords in the Cascades leaped from the ten-foot dais in unison, hitting the grass without breaking stride.
Panic surged through Freya. For years, she had watched these terrifying, god-like men from afar. The idea of one Alpha claiming her was overwhelming; the reality that both twin rulers were stalking toward her with eyes blazing with untamed mating hunger made her knees tremble violently.
Feral instinct overtook her. Freya turned on her heel and bolted into the dark hemlock forest behind the pavilion.
She ran with all the agility of a mountain nymph, her soft leather slippers flying over mossy roots and damp pine needles, her honey-blonde hair streaming behind her like a banner of gold. Her heart pounded frantically against her ribs, the twin golden cords inside her chest pulling taut, burning with a delicious, torturous heat that seemed to melt her bones.
Behind her, the forest exploded with terrifying power.
"Run as far as you want, little mate!" Jax’s roar ripped through the trees, heavy with primal amusement and fierce, predatory promise. "The hunt only makes the claiming sweeter!"
Two colossal Alpha presences crashed through the dense undergrowth on either side of her trail with terrifying, effortless speed. Branch limbs cracked, heavy combat boots thudded against the earth, and the dual scents of cedar smoke, winter pine, and dark masculine dominance surrounded her like an inescapable net.
Freya reached a secluded moonlit glade where a mountain stream spilled over granite stones. Before she could cross the water, a towering figure stepped out from the shadows of a weeping willow, blocking her path.
It was Jaden.
He had cut off her line of escape with silent, chilling tactical precision. He stood with his arms slightly spread, his tailored charcoal tunic straining across his massive chest, his storm-blue eyes gleaming with dark, sensual triumph.
"Nowhere left to run, sweet girl," Jaden murmured, his voice velvety and hypnotic, sending a wave of delicious shivers racing down her spine.
Freya spun around to dart back toward the woods, only to slam directly into an immovable wall of solid, furnace-hot muscle.
Jax’s large, calloused hands clamped around her waist like bands of forged steel, lifting her effortlessly off the ground. He spun her around and pinned her back against the broad trunk of an ancient hemlock, his towering six-foot-four frame trapping her completely between his muscular body and the rough bark.
"Caught you," Jax growled down into her face, his breath hot, ragged, and smelling of cinnamon and cedar smoke. His amber eyes burned with an unbridled, possessive fire that stole every breath from her lungs.
Before Freya could speak, Jaden closed the distance from behind Jax, stepping into their space. His large, warm hand reached past Jax's shoulder, his long fingers gently cupping the soft curve of Freya’s jawline, tilting her head back to expose the trembling hollow of her throat.
"Look at her, Jax," Jaden whispered, his voice thick with reverence and raw Alpha hunger. "She smells like wild jasmine and clover. The goddess gave us our queen... and we are never letting her go."
Trapped between two colossal, predatory Alphas whose combined heat felt like a roaring furnace, Freya let out a soft, trembling whimper as the dual cords of the mate bond flared into blinding crimson starlight.
