Chapter 3
The Scent of Two Predators
The Alpha Twins' Mate · Scarlett Reed · 6 min read
Perched high upon the highest granite crag overlooking the snow-capped expanse of the Silverpeak valley stood the High Peak Manor.
Constructed during the First Dynasty from ancient ironwood timbers, black river basalt, and reinforced plate glass, the fortress-manor was an impenetrable mountain citadel reserved exclusively for the sovereign rulers of the territory. Inside, the grand master suite occupied the entire third floor—a colossal sanctuary of masculine luxury featuring a soaring timber-vaulted ceiling, a massive walk-in stone fireplace crackling with fragrant cedar logs, and an enormous custom-built bed crafted from dark carved walnut, draped in plush down comforters and heavy black wolf furs.
Jax carried Freya through the carved double doors of the suite, kicking them shut with the heel of his heavy combat boot before crossing the expansive room to lower her gently onto the edge of the vast bed.
Freya sank into the plush comforters, clutching Jaden’s wool cloak tightly around her shoulders. Her violet-gray eyes darted across the chamber, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.
The two Alphas immediately filled the room with their overwhelming, predatory presence. Jax unbuckled his heavy broadsword and scabbard, letting the five-foot steel weapon clatter onto the stone hearth before peeling off his bear-fur vest and tossing it onto a leather armchair. He stretched, his massive shoulders and bronze chest corded with muscle, radiating a furnace-like heat that chased away the mountain chill.
Jaden moved with quiet, aristocratic grace to the cedar sideboard, pouring three crystal goblets of warm, spiced mulled wine infused with orange peel and star anise.
"Drink this, Freya," Jaden said softly, walking over and kneeling on one knee before the bed. He offered the crystal goblet to her, his storm-blue eyes searching hers with deep, comforting tenderness. "It contains cinnamon, clove, and sweet mountain honey. It will warm your blood and calm the racing in your chest."
Freya looked down into his handsome face, noting the fine silver threads running through his dark hair and the mesmerizing depth of his gaze. She took the goblet with trembling fingers, taking a slow sip. The spiced wine washed over her tongue with rich, soothing heat, sending a wave of comforting warmth rippling through her frozen veins.
"Thank you," she whispered, her voice barely a thread of sound in the spacious room.
Jax walked over, stepping up to the other side of the bed. He had unbuttoned his black tunic down to his mid-chest, revealing a bronze expanse of corded muscle and a jagged silver scar cutting across his collarbone—the mark of an enemy blade taken during the border wars. He sat on the edge of the mattress beside her, the heavy bed dipping beneath his massive weight, his amber eyes burning hot in the firelight.
"You're still frightened of us, sweet girl," Jax rumbled softly, his gravelly baritone rough with self-reproach. He reached out, his large, calloused hand hovering hesitatingly before resting gently on her knee over the wool blanket. "We came at you like a pack of starving wolves on a hunt tonight. That was my fault. My inner beast lost all discipline the second your jasmine scent hit the air."
"It was not your fault alone, Jax," Jaden said, setting his own goblet on the nightstand and resting his large, warm hand over Freya's cold fingers where they clutched her glass. "The triad bond is an ancient, overwhelming force. For seven years, our wolves have rejected every unmated female in the northern territories because our souls were waiting for you. Can you blame us for losing our minds when the goddess finally brought you into our sight?"
Freya looked between the two brothers, feeling the contrasting textures of their touch—Jax’s rough, battle-hardened grip on her knee, and Jaden’s smooth, elegant warmth covering her fingers.
"I am just an apothecary apprentice," she said softly, looking down at the dark wine in her glass. "I grew up an orphan in the lower quarter after my parents died of winter fever. I spend my days gathering leaves in the dirt, tending to cuts and sprains. I don't know pack politics. I don't know how to command warrior battalions. How can I possibly be the Luna to two Alphas?"
Jax let out a low, rumbling chuckle that sounded like a purring lion, the vibration buzzing right through the mattress. He reached out, his large thumb gently lifting her chin until her violet-gray eyes were locked with his burning amber gaze.
"We don't need a politician, sweet girl," Jax murmured, his thumb tracing the soft curve of her lower lip with agonizing tenderness. "We don't need another general. Silverpeak has enough swords, shields, and spilled blood to drown the continent. What we need... what my brother and I have starved for... is a heart. A queen who looks at us not as ruthless war machines, but as men."
Jaden leaned forward, his lips brushing against the soft skin of her temple, inhaling the intoxicating perfume of wild jasmine rising from her hair. "You are everything the goddess intended for us, Freya. Gentle where we are harsh. Healing where we are wounded. For seven years, Jax and I have carried the brutal weight of ruling this territory alone. You will never have to pick herbs in fear or hunger again. From this night forward, every warrior in Silverpeak answers to your voice."
A delicious shiver rippled through Freya's body at Jaden's words. The phantom heat of the mate bond began to hum in her blood, pulsing in sync with the twin heartbeats surrounding her. Her inner wolf stretched and purred in deep, uninhibited contentment, completely surrendering to the protective warmth of the two predators flanking her.
Jax leaned down, his rugged face bare inches from hers, his ragged breath fanning across her parted lips with the intoxicating scent of cedar and cinnamon. "May I kiss you, Freya? No commands. No Alpha pressure. Only if you want it."
Freya looked into his burning amber eyes, seeing the fierce, desperate reverence shining through the predator's gaze. Slowly, with trembling courage, she tilted her head upward.
"Yes," she whispered.
Jax groaned—a deep, guttural sound torn from the depths of his soul.
He leaned in, capturing her parted lips in a slow, deep, devastating kiss. His mouth was hot, tasting of spiced wine and sweet cedar smoke, his tongue sweeping past her teeth with practiced, possessive hunger that made Freya's toes curl. A wave of liquid electricity detonated in her belly, racing straight down between her thighs. She whimpered softly into the kiss, her hands rising to grip the front of Jax’s open tunic, her fingers sinking into the hard, sculpted muscle of his chest.
When Jax finally broke the kiss to let her breathe, his forehead rested against hers, his eyes glazed with untamed passion.
Before Freya could catch her breath, Jaden's hands cupped her face from the side.
"My turn, little queen," Jaden whispered huskily.
He brought his mouth down upon hers, but where Jax’s kiss had been a raging forest fire, Jaden’s was a slow, intoxicating flood of liquid silk. He kissed her with deep, seductive mastery, his tongue coaxing hers into a slow, sensual dance that stole the remaining strength from her limbs. Freya melted into the mattress, whimpering against his lips, completely overwhelmed by the contrasting, intoxicating flavors of the two men who held her soul in their hands.
When Jaden finally released her swollen lips, both Alphas were breathing heavily, their eyes blazing with dark, possessive triumph as they looked upon their dazed, beautiful mate.
"Tonight, you sleep between us, Freya," Jaden murmured, helping her slip out of her heavy traveling slippers and easing her down beneath the down comforter. "No claiming. No demands. Just rest in the sanctuary of your mates."
Jax climbed into the bed on her right, pulling her back against his broad chest, his massive arm locking securely around her waist. Jaden climbed in on her left, his chest pressed against her front, tucking her head under his chin.
Sandwiched between the furnace-hot bodies of the two most dangerous Alphas in the mountains, Freya closed her eyes and let out a long, contented sigh, falling asleep to the twin rhythms of their steady heartbeats.
