Chapter 2

The Banquet of Shadows

The Alpha's Wife Was Never His · Elena Vance · 6 min read

The Great Hall of Blackwood Keep was a cavernous expanse of black granite and ancient oak beams, hung with the battle-torn banners of fifty territorial conquests. Roaring bonfires blazed in four massive hearths carved into the shape of howling wolf maws, casting long, dancing shadows across tables groaning beneath roasted stags, platters of smoked river trout, and barrels of dark northern mead.

Four hundred wolves—commanders of the vanguard, council elders, pack matrons, and allied emissaries—filled the long benches, their voices rising in a boisterous din of laughter and boastful war stories. The scent of spilled ale, spiced venison, and wolf musk hung thick in the warm air.

At the center of the raised dais stood the high table, draped in heavy black velvet embroidered with the silver wolf of House Blackwood.

Alpha Rowan Blackwood sat upon the central throne of carved black ash. His broad shoulders were draped in an obsidian mantle of northern dire-bear fur, his obsidian breastplate polished until it mirrored the torchlight. Across his right cheek ran the three parallel scars earned at Broken Ridge—a mark that only added to the lethal, brooding magnetism that made women across the territories sigh and rival warlords tread with caution.

To his right sat Lady Vivianne Vance.

She wore an off-the-shoulder gown of midnight-blue silk that hugged every curve of her voluptuous frame, the fabric so sheer and delicate it mocked the winter cold outside. The sapphire-encrusted platinum collar of the Blackwood Luna glittered at her throat, sending brilliant blue sparks across the polished table as she leaned toward Rowan, whispering into his ear with a soft, breathy laugh that caused Rowan’s lips to curve in a rare, indulgent smirk.

A murmur of uneasy intrigue rippled through the front tables of the elders.

"Where is Luna Mira?" Elder Corin, the white-bearded master of pack law, murmured to his neighbor, his bushy brows knitted in deep displeasure. "The Solstice invocation must be sung by the Luna. It has been the law of Blackwood for two centuries."

"Times change, Elder," muttered Lord Cassian Vance, Vivianne’s sleek, fox-faced uncle who sat opposite him, sipping honeyed wine from a gold goblet. "Ironridge brings two thousand battle-trained archers and fifty wagon loads of winter grain to this alliance. An alliance sealed by true blood and passionate devotion, rather than a moldering paper contract from an extinct line."

Before Corin could retort, the heavy oak doors at the base of the hall swung open with a resounding thud.

The boisterous laughter died in dozens of throats. Conversations faltered, then vanished into a breathless, electric silence.

Luna Mira Valerius walked into the hall.

She wore no furs, no jewels of state, and no colors of the Blackwood Pack. She was dressed in an exquisite gown of simple ivory silk that fell around her slender form like sculpted frost. Her long black hair was unbound, tumbling over her shoulders in a cascade of raven waves held back only by a delicate silver comb.

She walked without haste, her leather slippers making no sound upon the rush-strewn stones. Her chin was held high, her spine straight as a poised javelin, her amethyst eyes sweeping across the crowded benches with an icy, tranquil sovereignty that made hardened vanguard captains instinctively sit straighter and avert their eyes.

Rowan stiffened on the throne. His stormy gray eyes narrowed, tracking her progress up the central aisle. The casual smirk vanished from his lips, replaced by a dark, defensive scowl that caused Vivianne to frown and lay a manicured hand upon his forearm.

Mira ascended the stone steps of the dais. She did not look at Vivianne. She did not cast an accusatory glance at the sapphire collar gleaming against the mistress’s throat. She looked directly into Rowan’s eyes, her expression as serene and impenetrable as a frozen mountain lake.

"You are late, Mira," Rowan said, his voice dropping into the resonant, gravelly baritone of Alpha command that vibrated in the chests of every wolf in the first five rows. "The feast has commenced."

"The ledger of the pack has been balanced to the last coin, Alpha," Mira replied, her clear voice carrying effortlessly through the quiet hall. "The winter stores are cataloged, and the watch rotations for the outer perimeter are signed. Duty comes before dining."

A low murmur of approval ran through the elder matrons. For five years, none could fault Mira’s tireless devotion to the survival of the pack.

Rowan’s jaw clenched. He felt the subtle rebuke beneath her courteous words, and his pride bristle like raised fur. He cleared his throat, rising to his feet to his full six-foot-four height, commanding the entire room with his towering physical presence.

"Pack brothers and elders of Blackwood!" Rowan bellowed, his voice ringing against the vaulted roofbeams. "Tonight we celebrate not merely the turning of the sun, but the dawn of an empire! The southern territories of Ironridge have formally united with our banners. Together, we shall drive the feral Silverfang rogues from our borders and establish an unshakeable dominion across the Great Valley!"

Rousing cheers erupted from the younger warriors, banging their iron tankards against the oak tables until the hall shook with thunder.

Rowan raised his hand for silence. When the roar subsided, he turned slightly, gesturing toward Vivianne, who stood beside him with downcast eyes and a feigned, modest blush that failed to hide the predatory triumph gleaming in her hazel gaze.

"An alliance of this magnitude requires more than treaties," Rowan announced, his voice steady, though his eyes darted momentarily to Mira before hardening into iron certainty. "It requires a bond of blood and heart. Lady Vivianne Vance has agreed to join House Blackwood as my Consort of Honor. From this night forward, her word carries the authority of this throne. She shall share my table, my councils, and my command."

The silence that followed was suffocating.

Even the drunken warriors at the back benches fell mute. Consort of Honor was an archaic, almost forgotten title—a polite euphemism historically used when an Alpha intended to elevate a mistress to de facto Luna while relegating his wedded wife to the shadows of an unacknowledged administrative servant.

Vivianne smiled—a slow, venomous smirk directed straight at Mira. She stepped forward, letting her silk shoulder brush against Rowan’s breastplate, resting her palm flat against his heart in a brazen, public display of possession.

"I pledge my devotion to Blackwood," Vivianne purred, her voice dripping with sweet poison. "And I pray Luna Mira will accept me not as a rival, but as a sister in service to our great Alpha. There is room enough in this castle for both of us—one to tend the ledgers, and one to warm the Alpha’s bed and inspire his blade."

A choked gasp escaped one of the elder matrons.

Several vanguard captains looked down at their plates in profound embarrassment. To insult a wedded Luna so openly before four hundred witnesses was an egregious violation of sacred pack hospitality.

Rowan did not correct Vivianne. He looked at Mira, his eyes daring her to challenge him, daring her to create a scene so he could use his Alpha aura to subdue her and demonstrate his absolute supremacy before the allied Ironridge delegates.

*'Make your scene, Mira,'* his arrogant posture seemed to say. *'Weep, shout, demand your rights. You have no powerful family to back you. You have nowhere else to go. You will accept what I give you and be grateful for the roof over your head.'*

Mira looked at Rowan. Then she looked at Vivianne.

She did not flinch. She did not shed a single tear.

Instead, a faint, crystalline smile touched the corners of Mira’s lips—a smile so cold, so distant, and so filled with pity that Rowan felt an unexpected, inexplicable chill crawl down the back of his neck.

"A sister in service?" Mira repeated softly, her voice slicing through the heavy silence like a razor through silk. "How generous of you, Lady Vivianne. But you mistake the nature of this throne."

Mira took two deliberate steps toward the center of the dais, stopping before the grand council table where the ceremonial goblets and treaty scrolls lay displayed beneath the torchlight.
