Chapter 3
The Citadel of Fort Fenris
The Blood Moon Tithe · Freya Lindqvist · 6 min read
The touch of Gunnar Skoll’s bare hand against Astrid’s wrist felt like a branding iron of liquid fire. Despite the sub-zero blizzard swirling around them, heat radiated from his massive body like an open forge, melting the snow where his bare feet stood upon the frozen granite.
With effortless, terrifying strength, Gunnar twisted his fingers, disarming her with a single flick of his wrist. Her bone-handled dagger flipped into the air; Gunnar caught the blade cleanly by the hilt, sliding it into the leather sheath on his own belt.
Before Astrid could draw a breath to protest, his other arm swept around her waist.
He lifted her clean off the ground as if she weighed no more than a bundle of dry kindling. Astrid gasped, her hands instinctively coming up to push against his rock-hard chest, feeling the blistering heat of his skin and the rapid, thunderous hammering of his heart.
"Let me down!" she demanded, her voice sharp despite the cold that threatened to numb her lips. "I came as an ambassador of the treaty, not a sack of flour to be hauled through the woods!"
Gunnar looked down at her, a slow, predatory smirk curving his carved lips. The glacier-blue of his eyes darkened into a deep, possessive sapphire that made her stomach tighten with an electric, dangerous thrill. "You are the Tithe, Astrid Elowen. Which means your feet touch the ground only when I permit it."
A sharp whistle pierced the howling wind. From the shadows of the iron pines emerged two massive warhorses—colossal northern draft chargers draped in heavy boiled leather barding and wolf pelts, their nostrils snorting plumes of white steam.
Gunnar vaulted onto the back of the lead black stallion in a single, fluid motion, pulling Astrid onto the saddle before him. He wrapped his heavy bearskin cloak around her shivering shoulders, encasing her in thick fur and his own scorching body heat. His massive arm locked around her waist like an iron band, anchoring her firmly against his chest.
"Hold the pommel," Gunnar growled into her ear, his hot breath brushing her sensitive neck, sending a shiver cascading down her spine that had nothing to do with the winter cold.
He kicked the stallion into a thundering gallop.
For two hours, they rode through the blizzard, ascending the jagged western switchbacks of Mount Fenrir. Below them, the vast expanse of the Ironwood Taiga disappeared beneath a swirling sea of white clouds, while above them, the colossal volcanic fortress of Fort Fenris carved into the black granite peaks emerged from the storm like an ancient titan's fortress.
Colossal curtain walls of dressed black basalt rose eighty feet above the sheer cliff edges, punctuated by towering watchtowers where blue witchfire burned in massive iron braziers. As they crested the final causeway, a pair of ninety-foot iron gates forged in the likeness of snarling wolves groaned open on massive counterweighted chains.
They thundered into the outer bailey.
The courtyard was bustling with hundreds of Lycans. Massive warriors clad in boiled leather, iron mail, and wolfskins were sharpening broadswords and repairing siege ballistas; she-wolves with bows slung across their shoulders were unloading sleds of smoked elk meat; and children running with silver-furred pups paused in their tracks as the Alpha's stallion skidded to a halt on the packed snow.
A hush fell over the bailey.
Gunnar dismounted first, his long silver hair whipping in the wind. He turned and lifted Astrid down from the saddle, his hands lingering on her waist, holding her close against him for a heartbeat longer than necessary before releasing her.
Astrid stood her ground, pulling the bearskin cloak tight around her frame, her amber-violet eyes sweeping the courtyard with calm, defiant composure. She felt the heavy, scrutinizing weight of hundreds of predatory gazes upon her. To them, she was a frail human maiden from the lowlands; but the way she held her chin high and met their burning amber and golden eyes commanded instant, grudging respect.
Footsteps crunched heavily on the gravel behind them.
Approaching from the keep was a towering warrior with a scarred jaw and a heavy battle-axe slung across his back: Torvald Ironclaw, the Beta commander of the Frostfang Pack. Beside him walked a tall, lean she-wolf with long silver-blonde hair braided with hawk feathers and piercing blue eyes identical to Gunnar’s: Sigrid Skoll, Gunnar’s younger sister and lead huntress.
"You returned with the Tithe, brother," Torvald spoke in a deep, gravelly voice, his eyes narrowing as he caught the scent hanging in the air. His nostrils flared, his pupils dilating in sudden shock. "By the Moon... Gunnar, what is this smell?"
Sigrid stepped closer, sniffing the cold air, her gaze snapping toward Astrid with wide, disbelieving eyes. "It's impossible. That scent... it hasn't existed since the fall of the High Wardens. She is human, yet her blood—"
"Enough, Sigrid," Gunnar's voice cracked like thunder across the bailey, silencing his sister instantly. His posture expanded, the terrifying, sovereign aura of an apex Alpha rolling off his shoulders in waves of raw dominance that forced several younger pack members in the courtyard to drop their eyes and bare their necks in submission.
Gunnar turned to Torvald. "Double the perimeter patrols on the southern ridge. Borek Bloodfang’s raiders were spotted five leagues from the valley gate. If a single red wolf crosses our scent line, bring me their head on a spear."
"It will be done, Alpha," Torvald bowed with deep reverence.
Gunnar turned back to Astrid, his large hand taking her arm with firm, unyielding possession. "Come with me, Astrid. You and I have things to discuss that are not for the ears of the pack."
He led her through the massive bronze doors of the inner keep, stepping out of the freezing wind into the warm, torchlit halls of the mountain citadel, where the true trial of the Blood Moon was about to begin.
The winding ascent to the summit of Mount Fenrir revealed the breathtaking, barbaric majesty of the Lycan stronghold. High above the timberline, the road crossed narrow natural stone arches suspended over thousand-foot glacier chasms, where frozen waterfalls hung in the moonlight like monumental curtains of blue diamond. The black granite ramparts of Fort Fenris seemed to grow out of the mountain peak itself, ancient and indestructible. Within the colossal bailey, the sheer scale of the citadel took Astrid’s breath away. Massive timber lodges of dark cedar were carved with intricate totems of howling wolves, serpents, and celestial stars; colossal forge chimneys belched showers of orange sparks into the freezing night sky; and the rich, comforting smells of roasting meats, pine pitch, and dark malt hung thick in the air. Astrid noticed the discipline of the pack—there was no chaotic savagery here, only an ancient, structured society of warriors, artisans, and families bound by sacred ties of honor and blood. As Gunnar carried her toward the inner keep, the murmurs of the pack shifted from suspicion to hushed reverence, their keen senses catching the celestial fragrance that trailed in her wake.
Outside the grand archway of the central keep, two massive iron braziers burned with fragrant juniper logs, casting long dancing shadows across the ancient flagstones. Torvald and Sigrid escorted them to the heavy iron-reinforced oak doors, their heads bowed in silent pack respect. Astrid stepped through the threshold beside Gunnar, feeling the colossal weight of history and destiny closing around them. She was no longer just a wanderer of the snowdrifts; she had crossed the boundary of two worlds, stepping into the legendary heart of Mount Fenrir as an honored guest and a sovereign force in her own right.
