Chapter 1

The Solstice Toll

The sub-zero wind howling down from the glacier peaks of the Ironwood Taiga tasted of frozen needle-pine, crushed granite, and ancient death. In the isolated northern border settlement of Oakhaven, the snowdrifts had piled eight feet high against the timber stockade, burying the sheep pens and turning the narrow mud streets into trenches of packed white ice.

Inside the village longhouse, the air was choked with the acrid smoke of burning birch logs and the bitter stench of human terror.

Sixty villagers huddled together in the gloom, their emaciated faces hollow with three months of relentless famine. Outside the wooden gates, the marauding rogue wolves of Borek Bloodfang had already burned three neighboring hamlets to the ground, butchering cattle and dragging farmers into the frozen ravines. Oakhaven had only survived the merciless winter because of an ancient, sacred covenant carved into the black granite boundary stones three hundred years ago: the Blood Moon Treaty.

Every fifty winters, when the winter solstice coincided with the rise of the crimson lunar eclipse, the sovereign Lycan dynasty of Mount Fenrir demanded their toll—the Blood Moon Tithe. A maiden of pure blood, sent beyond the Mist Boundary into the forbidden heart of the wolves' territory, never to return.

In the center of the hall, kneeling in the dirt beside a weeping mother, was seventeen-year-old Kira Vance. The village council had drawn lots at dawn, and the blackened carved rune stone had fallen at the girl's trembling feet. Her mother’s desperate wailing echoed against the rough cedar rafters, a sound of hopeless, agonizing grief that scraped like a dull blade against Astrid Elowen’s soul.

Astrid stood near the entrance of the longhouse, leaning against a rough pine pillar. At twenty-four, she was not like the other women of Oakhaven. Where they wore wool shawls and spent the winter spinning flax by the fire, Astrid wore cured deer hide lined with Arctic fox fur, knee-high snow boots bound with rawhide sinew, and a long bone-handled hunting dagger strapped to her thigh. Her chestnut-copper hair was woven into intricate warrior braids down her back, and her striking amber-violet eyes missed nothing.
