Chapter 3

The Hunt through Midtown

The Mafia King's Stolen Bride · Lovelle Originals · 5 min read

Beneath the heavy oak partner's desk, Sofia drew the compact tactical smoke canister from her emergency purse kit. With trembling fingers, she ripped the safety pin with her teeth and rolled the canister out across the terrazzo floor.

A concussive pop was followed instantly by a dense, blinding cloud of chemical white smoke that filled the penthouse study.

"Smoke! Infrared is blind!" one of the assassins shouted in German.

Gunfire erupted, suppressed submachine gun rounds chewing into the mahogany bookshelves and shattering antique glass cases in showers of splinters.

Sofia didn't look back. She scrambled out from beneath the desk, using the impenetrable smoke screen to dart through the private service door behind the wet bar. She threw her shoulder against the fire stairwell door, tumbling into the concrete emergency shaft.

She ran down the stairs four steps at a time, her heart hammering against her throat, the rhythmic *thud-thud-thud* of heavy combat boots echoing fifty feet above her.

She burst through the ground-floor service exit onto the rain-swept concrete of the building's commercial loading dock on 56th Street.

A gray Honda Civic stenciled with the Sterling Atlantic Foundation's discreet logo sat at the end of the alley, its engine idling, the night porter's coffee still steaming on the dashboard. It was not much of a getaway car. It was the only one she had.

Sofia threw herself into the driver's seat. The key was still in the ignition. The engine roared to life just as three men in tactical gear emerged from the stairwell door, raising their automatic rifles.

Bullets hammered against the car's rear windshield, the tempered safety glass shattering into a thousand spiderwebs.

Glass pebbled across the back seat and the wind came roaring through the ruined window, carrying the smell of rain and burned powder. Sofia ducked low over the wheel, peering between the frantic arcs of the wipers, and understood with perfect clarity that the men behind her were not trying to scare her into stopping. They were trying to finish a job that had been interrupted on the thirty-fourth floor of Apex and the eighty-sixth of Park Avenue in the same night.

Sofia slammed the transmission into reverse, flooring the accelerator. The rear bumper smashed into a metal dumpster, spinning the car around into the narrow alley before she threw it into drive, tires screeching against wet asphalt as the Honda rocketed out onto Lexington Avenue.

The downpour was blinding. Wipers slapped frantically against the windshield as Sofia wove through midnight traffic at sixty miles per hour.

In her rearview mirror, the headlights of two matte-black Cadillac Escalades appeared three blocks behind her, surging through red lights with aggressive, predatory speed.

"They're tracking the car's transponder," Sofia realized, panic clawing at her throat. "The foundation leased this vehicle. Sterling's firm installed the GPS."

She was still deep in Midtown. If she stayed on the open avenues, the heavy Escalades would ram her into a concrete divider within two minutes.

Sofia took a hard left onto 48th Street, tires sliding on the wet cobblestones, cutting toward the labyrinth of Lower Manhattan.

The Honda's tail swung wide as she cut through a delivery van's blind spot, clipping a stack of flattened produce crates that exploded across the street in a shower of wet cardboard. Behind her one of the Escalades braked hard and slewed sideways across two lanes; a taxi leaned on its horn and a second SUV vaulted the curb to avoid it. For ten seconds the whole street was pure noise. Then she was through the light at Third Avenue with a clear block ahead, her breath sawing in her ears and her knuckles white around the wheel.

She did not allow herself to think about Sterling's face as the round took him, or the way his fingers had curled once against the terrazzo as if still reaching for the tumbler. If she thought about that, she would have to think about the next thing, and the next, and there was no room for any of them. There was only the road, and the rule she had built her entire profession on: follow the money, follow the evidence, and never, ever stop to feel the weight of what it cost.

There was only one territory in the city where private military contractors feared to tread without an army: Little Italy and the lower Manhattan perimeter controlled by House Moretti.

Leo had told her once, during a rare Sunday dinner before his disappearance: 'The police answer to City Hall, and City Hall answers to the highest corporate donor. But the Morettis answer to no one. If the world ever collapses around you, little sister, find the lion crest. Luca Moretti is a monster, but he keeps his borders clean.'

It was madness. To run from assassins straight into the arms of the most feared crime boss on the eastern seaboard was trading the noose for the guillotine. But as a second SUV turned down the cross street, Sofia knew her choices had run out. Survival was no longer about safety; it was about choosing which predator would give her a chance to speak before pulling the trigger.

Her hands were shaking so badly on the wheel that the Honda wandered across the center line, and she dragged it back with a curse. The phone in her coat pocket had gone dead somewhere on the fire stairs; the only voice left to her was the one in her head, and it sounded a great deal like her brother's. Do not look at the beneficiaries. Do not trace the origin. Close the laptop and run.

She remembered the nights Leo would come home to their modest apartment in Bay Ridge, smelling of stale cigar smoke and salt water from the Brooklyn waterfront. He had always been the protective older brother, shielding her from the harsh realities of a cop's salary and the predatory loan sharks who hovered like vultures over their neighborhood. 'You're the brains of this family, Sofie,' he would say with that crooked, reckless smile of his, sliding a stack of books on advanced accounting across the kitchen table. 'You get your degree, you wear the tailored suits, and you leave the gutter to me.'

Now Leo was gone, swallowed by the very shadow he had sworn to keep her away from. And here she was, racing through the same gutter, hunted by killers whose reach eclipsed even the highest offices of the government.

Sofia crossed Houston with the temperature needle climbing and a thin ribbon of steam curling from under the hood where a stray round had found the radiator. The Escalades were gone from her mirror for the moment, but she knew better than to believe it. Men who owned the sky over Park Avenue did not lose a woman in a gray sedan for long. She needed to ditch the car before its transponder led them to her, and she needed to do it before the engine died and made the decision for her.

Ahead, the cast-iron facades of SoHo rose out of the rain, and somewhere beyond them lay Mercer Street, the lion crest Leo had told her about, and the one man in the city whose borders no contractor dared to cross. It was madness. It was also the only door left.
