Chapter 5

The Recognition

The Mafia King's Stolen Bride · Lovelle Originals · 5 min read

Luca Moretti was thirty-one years old, but his presence carried the immense, terrifying gravity of a warlord who had ruled an empire for decades. He was tall, broad-shouldered, and dressed in an immaculate bespoke charcoal three-piece suit that accentuated his athletic, lethal frame. His dark hair was cut sharp, his cheekbones high and aristocratic, but it was his eyes that froze the breath in Sofia's chest: piercing, dark obsidian eyes that assessed her with chilling, razor-sharp intelligence.

Luca walked toward her with slow, measured strides, his polished leather shoes making no sound against the parquet floor. He stopped three feet from her, his gaze taking in her soaked hair, the torn left sleeve of her coat, and the heavy leather briefcase clutched against her ribs.

"You smell of cordite, rain, and fresh blood," Luca spoke, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that vibrated through the small vestibule. "Senator Sterling was assassinated twenty-eight minutes ago in his Park Avenue penthouse. The NYPD has locked down Midtown, and two armored Cadillac Escalades carrying European mercenaries are currently scouring Mercer Street."

He turned to his lead guard, who held her briefcase. "Scan the drive for transponders and clone the partition."

Luca held out his hand, and the second guard laid her leather wallet in it. He flipped it open, looking at her New York State driver's license and her forensic accounting credentials.

Suddenly, Luca stilled.

Sofia stood her ground, forcing her spine straight despite the exhaustion trembling through her limbs. She refused to cower. She had survived high-level corporate audits where billionaires had tried to intimidate her into silence; she would not let this mob king see her break.

'My name is Sofia De Marco,' she said clearly, her chin lifting. 'I am a senior forensic fraud investigator with Apex Advisory. Tonight I extracted the unredacted transactional records of Cerberus Holdings from the Apex servers, and then I watched Senator Donald Sterling die for them.'

At the surname De Marco, Luca's eyes narrowed imperceptibly. A flicker of recognition—sharp and dangerous—flashed across his dark features.

'De Marco,' Luca murmured, stepping slowly down the marble stairs. His leather shoes clicked with measured rhythm. 'Leo De Marco had a sister. A brilliant numbers girl who stayed far away from the docks and the backroom poker games.'

'You knew Leo?' Sofia's breath hitched. 'Where is he? Your people told me he skipped town three years ago, but Sterling told me he was dead.'

Luca stopped three paces from her. Up close, the sheer physical intensity of the man was overwhelming. A subtle scar cut across his left temple, disappearing into his dark hair, a silent testament to battles fought and won.

'Your brother didn't skip town, Miss De Marco,' Luca said, his gaze unwavering. 'He was taken. Three years ago, he was auditing an off-the-books logistics company that my late father Cesare maintained in New Jersey. Leo discovered a leak—a thirty-million-dollar phantom siphon that led straight into a political black-budget consortium.'

The ambient hum of the club seemed to die away. Sofia watched the subtle, microscopic shift in Luca's posture: the sudden tightening of his jaw, the flare of his nostrils, and the dangerous, predatory focus that ignited in his amber eyes.

He looked up from the license, his gaze boring straight into her soul.

"Sofia De Marco," Luca murmured, the name rolling off his tongue like an ancient curse. "Born in Brooklyn. Master of Science in Forensic Accounting from Columbia University."

He stepped closer, towering over her, his presence suffocating every inch of air in the room.

"Tell me, Sofia," Luca whispered, his voice dropping into an icy register that made the hair on the back of her neck stand on end. "What is your relation to Leonardo De Marco?"

Sofia's heart stopped. "Leo... Leo is my older brother. He... he went missing three years ago."

Luca stared at her for five long, terrifying seconds. A dark, bitter smile touched the corner of his lips.

"Your brother didn't go missing, Sofia," Luca revealed, his eyes burning with a decade of suppressed vengeance. "Ten years ago, Leonardo De Marco was the accountant who certified the books for the meeting where my father, Don Cesare Moretti, was ambushed and murdered. And his signature is on the final murder file sitting in my safe."

Sofia felt the room sway beneath her feet. 'The Covenant,' she whispered, remembering the code tag on the ledger. 'The 099-COV prefix.'

Luca's expression hardened into terrifying stillness. He turned to his lieutenant, a grizzled man with graying hair who stood by the study doors. 'Matteo, lock down the entire perimeter. Double the gate details. If a sparrow flies within five hundred yards of this estate without a transponder, shoot it out of the sky.'

'Yes, Don Luca,' the lieutenant answered, nodding grimly before hurrying down the hall.

Luca turned back to Sofia. His eyes drifted over her soaked trench coat, taking in the dried blood on her cuff, and the fierce defiance still burning in her dark brown eyes.

'You witnessed Donald Sterling's assassination tonight, didn't you?' Luca asked, his tone dropping into a quieter, more intimate register.

'I was in the room when the sniper round took him through the chest,' Sofia replied, shivering as the memory flashed across her mind. 'Three tactical operators breached the penthouse terrace within ninety seconds. They had night vision, suppressed carbines, and zero fear of local law enforcement. They weren't mobsters, Don Moretti. They were an execution squad.'

The silence in the grand foyer was so profound that Sofia could hear the slow, rhythmic drip of water falling from the hem of her trench coat onto the pristine white Carrara marble floor. Each droplet made a soft, resonant tap that seemed to amplify the unbearable gravity of the room.

Don Luca Moretti did not take his eyes off her for a single heartbeat. His gaze was an interrogation in itself—calm, assessing, dissecting every micro-expression on her face with the ruthless efficiency of a general inspecting the enemy's vanguard.

'Leo spoke of you often,' Luca said, his voice dropping an octave, carrying the dark resonance of church bells at dusk. 'He told me his sister had a mind like an analytical engine, that you could spot a fraudulent entry across ten thousand pages of ledgers without looking up from your coffee. But he also swore that you were pure, that you had no stomach for our world.'

'I don't have a stomach for murder, Don Moretti,' Sofia replied, meeting his obsidian gaze without flinching, though her internal pulse was racing like a trapped bird. 'I have a stomach for truth. And right now, the truth is that your family and my brother were set up by the same puppet masters.'

A slight, almost imperceptible tilt of Luca's head acknowledged her strike. He walked a slow half-circle around her, his movements silent and measured, exuding the calm confidence of a predator who owned every square inch of the jungle he inhabited.

'The Covenant doesn't use street muscle,' Luca said, reaching out with an unexpected gentleness to take her drenched coat. 'They use ghosts. And right now, Sofia, those ghosts have marked you as the sole surviving witness to their treason.'
