Chapter 3
An Ultimatum in Steel
The Straits Cipher: In the Tycoon's Bed · Kenneth Chen & Alana Mercer · 7 min read
The penthouse atop the Marina Bay Financial Centre occupied the sixty-fifth and sixty-sixth floors, offering an awe-inspiring, 360-degree panorama of Singapore's illuminated skyline. Through floor-to-ceiling glass walls, the futuristic supertrees of Gardens by the Bay glowed in electric blue and violet, while the black expanse of the Singapore Strait was dotted with the twinkling lights of hundreds of anchored cargo vessels waiting for berth.
Inside the sprawling minimalist salon of black marble, brushed titanium, and warm cedar, Kenneth poured two crystal tumblers of aged Japanese whiskey. He slid one across the granite bar toward Alana, who stood near the glass perimeter with her arms crossed tightly over her chest.
"Drink, Alana," Kenneth said quietly. "It will calm your nerves."
"I don't need alcohol, Mr. Chen. I need to know what you want from me."
Kenneth took a slow sip of his whiskey, his obsidian eyes never leaving her face. He picked up a leather-bound folder resting on the conference table and opened it, revealing a typed document bearing the official seal of the Singapore High Court and the corporate signature of Chen-Apex Maritime.
"This is an executive motion for retrial and immediate provisional release for Arthur Mercer," Kenneth stated, his voice calm and matter-of-fact. "It includes newly declassified telemetry logs proving that the sabotage at Tuas Port was executed remotely via an offshore server in Macau, completely exonerating your father of all criminal negligence."
Alana felt the breath rush out of her lungs. Tears pricked at the corners of her eyes as she stared at the official judicial seal. "You had this evidence? You had proof my father was innocent, and you kept it hidden?"
"I acquired it twenty-four hours ago," Kenneth countered without apology. "In my world, timing is the difference between victory and bankruptcy. But this motion requires a judicial sponsor with sovereign standing. A sponsor willing to post fifty million dollars in collateral for Arthur Mercer's bail."
Alana looked up at him, suspicion hardening her gaze. "And what is the price of your sponsorship?"
Kenneth walked to the glass window, standing beside her as the city lights reflected against the sharp contours of his face.
"Six months, Alana," Kenneth said softly. "You sign an arranged betrothal contract. You move into my estate at Sentosa Cove. You wear my family's diamond ring and appear at my side at every diplomatic and maritime summit in Asia."
Alana stared at him in stunned disbelief. "A fake engagement? Why on earth would you need me to play your fiancé?"
Kenneth turned to face her, his gaze dropping to her parted lips before rising to pin her dark eyes. "Because the Board of Directors of Chen-Apex is voting on a sixty-billion-dollar port expansion next month. Liang Consortium holds twenty percent of the voting shares and is attempting a hostile takeover, claiming I am an unhinged, solitary bachelor with no family stability. An engagement to a respected Singaporean heritage conservator whose lineage stretches back to the Straits Settlements establishes legitimacy, community trust, and locks down the institutional swing votes."
"And what happens to the cipher?"
"You decode it," Kenneth murmured, leaning down until his lips were inches from her ear. "The microdot crystal contains the legacy algorithm for the autonomous port. You are the only conservator who understands the archaic cryptographic notation used by the colonial maritime guild. You give me the algorithm, you play my devoted bride for six months, and on the day after the board vote, your father is a free man and your family firm is endowed with a twenty-million-dollar preservation trust. Refuse... and your father spends the next fifteen years in Changi."
Alana's heart hammered against her ribs. The billionaire had laid a golden trap with surgical perfection. She looked at the retrial motion, then looked into Kenneth's unyielding eyes.
"Bring the pen, Mr. Chen," Alana whispered. "I accept your bargain."
The glass elevator shot upward through the spine of the Marina Bay Financial Centre with smooth, pressurized velocity. Outside the transparent cabin, the glittering jewel of Singapore unfurled beneath them: the luminous curves of Marina Bay Sands, the iconic lotus-shaped ArtScience Museum, and the dark ribbon of the Singapore River where bum-boats ferried tourists between colonial quays and futuristic skyscrapers.
Inside the two-story penthouse, the aesthetic was severe, immaculate, and undeniably masculine. There were no decorative flourishes, no sentimental clutter—only floor-to-ceiling glass, Italian slate, brushed titanium fixtures, and panoramic views that commanded the sea.
Kenneth removed his bespoke suit jacket, draping it over the back of a leather lounge chair, revealing the crisp, athletic fit of his dress shirt. He loosened his silk tie with an effortless motion that seemed to release an aura of untamed power into the room.
"You speak of marriage as if it were an off-balance-sheet transaction, Mr. Chen," Alana said, her voice steady despite the adrenaline humming in her blood. "Do you truly expect the Singapore business community to believe that Kenneth Chen—the reclusive, cold-blooded chairman who destroyed three shipping conglomerates before breakfast—has suddenly fallen madly in love with an architectural conservator?"
Kenneth poured two measures of Yamazaki whiskey into heavy crystal tumblers, handing one to her. His fingers brushed hers as she took the glass, sending an involuntary shiver racing up her arm.
"The business community does not care about romance, Alana," Kenneth replied, his deep baritone carrying absolute certainty. "They care about stability. For three years, Liang has whispered to institutional investors that my solitary lifestyle is a liability—that without an heir and an established household, Chen-Apex is vulnerable to succession crisis. By introducing you as my fiancé, I eliminate that vulnerability overnight. You come from an impeccable heritage family whose roots in Singapore predate the republic. Your father's exoneration will be seen as a heroic crusade led by his future son-in-law. It is the perfect narrative."
"And if I refuse to play your dutiful little bride?"
Kenneth took a slow sip of his whiskey, looking directly down into her eyes with an unyielding intensity that made her knees feel weak. "Then tomorrow morning, the judicial receiver begins the court-ordered auction of your ancestral home. By noon, Arthur Mercer is transferred from Changi to a maximum-security medical ward in Tanah Merah, where Liang's operatives have already placed two contract killers among the orderly staff. You have until the ice in this glass melts to choose your father's survival, Miss Mercer."
The private penthouse at the Marina Bay Financial Centre was a sanctuary of silent, staggering wealth. Below the sixty-sixth-floor glass balcony, the city hummed with late-night energy. The illuminated cargo ships anchored in the eastern anchorage looked like a constellation of stars floating on the black expanse of the sea, each vessel carrying tens of millions of dollars of goods governed by Kenneth Chen's logistics networks.
Kenneth walked to the sleek, floating credenza and picked up a heavy, custom-molded platinum pen. He placed it beside the six-month contractual agreement on the glass coffee table.
"The terms are unequivocal, Alana," Kenneth said, leaning his hip against the table, his arms folded across his chest. "You will be provided with full diplomatic immunity through Chen-Apex's sovereign maritime concessions. Your personal accounts will be immediately unblocked, and an initial endowment of five million Singapore dollars will be deposited into Mercer Conservation's operating account tomorrow morning. In exchange, you wear my ring, reside at my Sentosa estate, and accompany me as my betrothed to every official engagement."
Alana picked up the contract, her eyes scanning the precise, elegant clauses drafted by Singapore's premier corporate attorneys. "Clause fourteen: *The parties shall present an unbroken public facade of genuine marital intent and romantic devotion.* What does that mean in private, Kenneth?"
Kenneth looked down at her, his lips curving into a slow, dangerous smirk that sent heat rushing straight to her cheeks. "In private, Alana, you have the master suite of the east wing with biometric locks to which only you possess the key. I do not force women into my bed. If you ever come to me, it will be because you choose to. But in public... in public, you will look at me as if I am the only man who exists on this earth. Because if Liang suspects for a fraction of a second that our engagement is a legal maneuver, he will use every media channel and regulatory contact he owns to invalidate our board voting bloc."
Alana took a deep breath, her fingers tightening around the heavy platinum pen. She thought of her father sitting in a sterile prison cell, his health deteriorating, his life's work reduced to ashes. She had no other choice. She set the pen to paper and signed her name with a steady, decisive stroke.
Before they signed the contractual agreement on the glass coffee table, Kenneth stood by the panoramic glass window, watching a massive container vessel glide silently toward the Tuas navigational channel. "My grandfather started Chen-Apex with a single wooden junk ferrying rubber and tin across the Malacca Strait in nineteen-forty-eight," he murmured, his voice rich with quiet reverence. "He built this company with sweat, discipline, and an iron code of honor. He used to tell me that a contract between honorable people is sacred, but an alliance between people who share a common purpose is unconquerable. You and I, Alana, are fighting for the same thing: the honor of the men who built our foundations. When you sign that paper, you are not surrendering to me. You are stepping into the arena as my partner." Alana looked down at the signature line, feeling the immense weight of his words. She took the platinum pen, pressing the nib to the smooth vellum, and signed her name with absolute conviction.
