The Restorer of Emerald Hill

The late afternoon tropical rain drummed against the glazed Peranakan ceramic roof tiles of Emerald Hill, filling the narrow heritage conservation street with the scent of wet terracotta, frangipani blossoms, and humid sea air. Inside the two-story nineteenth-century shophouse, twenty-five-year-old Alana Mercer adjusted her protective safety glasses, her delicate hands holding a diamond-tipped micro-vibrational chisel.

For four generations, Mercer Architectural Conservation had been Singapore's premier authority on restoring British colonial and Straits Chinese heritage landmarks. But since her father, Arthur Mercer, was framed and imprisoned seven months ago for supposed structural tampering at the autonomous Tuas Mega Port, the firm was on the brink of liquidation. Alana was working twelve-hour days alone in the dust-filled salon, fighting to finish the restoration of the historic Stamford trading house before court-appointed creditors seized the property.

She leaned into the exposed upper crossbeam of Burmese teak. The century-old timber, seasoned by decades of tropical monsoons, had developed a hairline fracture along the central mortise. But as Alana cleared away the calcified lime plaster and old dammar resin, her chisel struck something unexpectedly dense.

Not wood. Metal.

Her breath hitched. Carefully using a soft brass wire brush and a fiber-optic dental probe, she exposed a recessed void drilled horizontally into the heartwood. Inside sat a machined cylinder of marine-grade phosphor bronze, sealed with an antique wax impression bearing the crest of the Straits Settlements Maritime Guild.

"What were they hiding in the structural beams?" Alana whispered to herself.
