Chapter 1

The Vault of Sins

30 Nights in the Don's Vault · Elena Vance & Dante King · 4 min read

The rain slashed against the floor-to-ceiling panoramic glass of the penthouse, mirroring the cold fury running through Elena Petrova's veins. Sixty stories below, Manhattan was a blurred constellation of yellow cabs and neon glare, indifferent to the shadow slipping through the penthouse terrace doors.

Elena pressed her back against the cool Italian marble column, holding her breath. The bass from the ballroom downstairs reverberated faintly through the floorboards—a charity masquerade gala hosted by Moretti Enterprises. Hundreds of high-society elites in velvet masks sipping champagne, completely blind to the monster who owned the building.

Don Alessandro Moretti.

The name alone made hardened syndicate capos lower their voices in terror. He was the undisputed king of New York's underworld, a billionaire shipping magnate in public and a ruthless killer behind iron doors. And according to the encrypted journal Elena had spent eighteen months deciphering, he was the man who had ordered the murder of her older sister, Maya.

Maya had been an investigative journalist who dug too deep into the Moretti syndicate's international accounts. Three months ago, her car had been fished out of the East River. The police ruled it a tragic accident. Elena knew better. She had seen the bruises on Maya's wrists in the morgue photos.

'I promised you justice, Maya,' Elena whispered, her fingers steady as she pulled a sleek electronic decoder from her evening clutch.

She wore a backless emerald silk gown slit to the upper thigh—a stunning disguise that had allowed her to slip past the security detail downstairs. But beneath the silk, strapped to her garter belt, rested a titanium lockpick kit and a miniature thermal scanner.

She approached the heavy oak bookcase on the north wall of Alessandro's private study. Behind the third shelf, her thermal scanner revealed the outline of a biometric keypad.

Elena's pulse spiked. She attached the decoder to the interface. The LED flashed amber: *Bypassing 256-bit cypher... 42%... 78%... Granted.*

A soft click echoed in the silent study. The bookcase swung inward with hydraulic smoothness, revealing a walk-in vault lined with velvet cases of bearer bonds, rare antiquities, and a central titanium console holding a black ledger.

Elena stepped inside, her emerald heels making no sound on the thick Persian rug. Her fingers trembled with adrenaline as she reached for the ledger. This was the proof she needed. The ledger containing offshore accounts, bribe logs, and the syndicate hit list.

She opened the cover. The first page bore the Moretti crest—a coiled viper beneath a crowned dagger.

"Admiring my collection, little thief?"

The voice was low, gravelly, and sent a shiver straight down Elena's spine. It was a voice of absolute authority, soaked in velvet and razor blades.

Elena froze. The distinct, metallic *clack* of a Beretta 9mm being cocked sounded barely two inches behind her left ear.

The scent of cedarwood, expensive bourbon, and ozone filled the confined air of the vault. A tall shadow fell over her, engulfing her completely.

"Hands where I can see them," the voice commanded, silky yet lethal. "Slowly. If your fingers twitch toward your garter, your pretty head will decorate my vault walls before you take another breath."

Elena swallowed hard, her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird. She raised her hands slowly, stepping away from the pedestal, and turned around.

Standing before her was Alessandro Moretti.

Even in the dim amber lighting of the vault, he was breathtaking in the most terrifying way. Well over six feet tall, broad-shouldered in a bespoke three-piece charcoal tuxedo that fit his muscular frame like armor. His dark hair was brushed back, revealing sharp, aristocratic cheekbones, a strong jaw shadow with stubble, and eyes so dark and piercing they looked like polished obsidian. A faint white scar ran across his left temple down to his jawline—a violent reminder of the battles he had survived.

His dark eyes raked over her, from the curve of her throat down the plunging neckline of her emerald dress, down to the slit revealing her long, slender leg. There was no panic in his gaze; only cold, predatory amusement.

"Elena Petrova," he murmured, his thumb stroking the hammer of the gun.

Elena felt the breath leave her lungs. "You know who I am?"

"I know every breath taken inside this tower," Alessandro stepped closer, his towering frame invading her personal space until she could feel the heat radiating from his chest. "I know you're an art conservator at the Met. I know you spent the last six months monitoring my shipping manifests. And I know you think you're going to avenge your little sister."

Elena's chin lifted with defiant pride, refusing to cower. "If you know why I'm here, then pull the trigger, Moretti. Because if you don't, I will tear your empire down piece by piece until you burn."

A slow, wicked smile curled the corner of Alessandro's lips. He lowered the gun, his gaze dropping to her trembling, parted lips.

"Kill you?" Alessandro chuckled, a sound deep and resonant in his chest. "Death is far too quick for a woman with fire like yours. You broke into my sanctum, Elena. Now you belong to me."

Before she could react, his free hand shot out, his long fingers wrapping around her throat—not cutting off her air, but pinning her firmly against the titanium vault wall. The sudden, electrifying contact sent a violent shockwave through Elena's body, shocking her with its primal heat.
