Chapter 3

The Gilded Cage

30 Nights in the Don's Vault · Elena Vance & Dante King · 4 min read

The silk restraints fell away as Alessandro sliced through them with a pocket blade of Damascus steel.

Elena rubbed her wrists, where faint red bands marked her pale skin. She stood up quickly, putting distance between them, her chest rising and falling beneath the emerald gown.

"Smart girl," Alessandro murmured, sheathing the knife and tucking it into his pocket. "A contract with the devil is always better than an unmarked grave."

"Don't flatter yourself, Moretti," Elena snapped, her chin held high despite the tremor in her knees. "This is an alliance of convenience. The moment I get the names of Maya's killers, your thirty nights mean nothing."

A dark, mocking chuckle rumbled in his chest. "We will see how brave you are after a week in my house, Elena."

He walked to the double mahogany doors and opened them. Two burly men in tailored charcoal suits with earpieces stood at attention in the hallway.

"Dante, Leo," Alessandro commanded without looking at them. "Escort Miss Petrova to the east wing master suite. She is our guest. She is not to leave the penthouse under any circumstances, and if she approaches a terrace door or window without my explicit permission, you lock down the entire floor."

"Understood, Don Alessandro," the older guard, Dante, responded with a crisp nod.

Elena cast one last look at Alessandro. He was already pouring another finger of scotch, his profile silhouetted against the rainy city skyline—impenetrable, arrogant, and terrifyingly captivating.

Ten minutes later, Elena stood in the center of the east wing master suite.

If it was a prison, it was the most decadent prison in the Western Hemisphere. The room was massive, dominated by a king-sized four-poster bed draped in charcoal silk sheets and ivory cashmere throws. A floor-to-ceiling glass wall looked out over the glowing lights of Central Park. To the right, double frosted doors opened into a private bathroom finished in black marble, featuring a jacuzzi tub large enough for four and a dual rainfall shower.

On the bed lay three garment boxes from Milan: silk nightgowns, tailored day dresses, and cashmere robes, all in shades of midnight blue, ivory, and emerald.

"He bought these in advance," Elena muttered to herself, horror and realization dawning on her. The dress sizes were exactly hers: 34B, small waist, long hem. He hadn't just caught her tonight by accident—he had been tracking her for weeks.

Elena walked to the floor-to-ceiling glass. She examined the locking mechanism. Heavy reinforced laminate with magnetic sensors. If she tried to break the glass, silent alarms would trigger before she could even rappel down.

A knock sounded on the bedroom door.

Before she could speak, the door swung open. A middle-aged woman with silver-streaked hair, wearing a neat black uniform, entered pushing a silver room-service cart.

"Good evening, signorina," the woman said in a warm, accented voice. "I am Rosa, the head housekeeper. Don Alessandro requested that I bring you a warm bath and supper."

On the cart was a plate of freshly prepared lobster risotto, a bowl of fresh figs, and a carafe of chilled mineral water.

"Thank you, Rosa," Elena said softly, her stomach betraying her with a quiet growl. She hadn't eaten since noon.

Rosa set the dishes on the glass table near the balcony. She looked at Elena with soft, knowing eyes. "Eat, child. You will need your strength. The Don... he is not an easy man, but he is a man of his word. In twenty years in this house, I have never seen him give a guest his silk ties."

Elena felt heat rush to her cheeks. "It was an interrogation, Rosa, not a romantic gesture."

Rosa gave a subtle, enigmatic smile. "In this house, signorina, the difference is often very thin."

With a polite bow, Rosa retreated, closing the heavy doors behind her with a soft latch.

Elena ate the risotto slowly, the rich, buttery flavor melting on her tongue. Her mind worked furiously. Thirty nights. She had thirty nights to navigate the labyrinth of Alessandro Moretti's empire, extract the encrypted files from his personal server, find the men who murdered Maya, and get out alive.

And she had to do it while sharing a roof—and a bed—with a man whose mere gaze made her pulse race dangerously out of control.

She set down her fork, walked into the marble bathroom, and turned on the rainfall shower. The steaming water filled the space with mist and the faint aroma of eucalyptus and lavender oils.

Stripping away the torn emerald silk dress, Elena looked at herself in the full-length mirror. A bruise was already blooming on her hip from when Alessandro had pinned her in the vault.

She touched the bruise with trembling fingertips. Her heart was beating fast, not just from adrenaline, but from an undeniable, forbidden electricity that had sparked between them the second his fingers touched her neck.

"You're a monster, Alessandro Moretti," she whispered into the steam. "And I'm going to make you pay."

Behind her, the click of the bedroom door unlocking made her freeze.

Through the frosted glass of the shower door, the silhouette of a tall, broad-shouldered man appeared, stepping into the suite with quiet, absolute dominance.
