Chapter 2
A Devil's Bargain

The silk tie was wrapped tight around Elena's wrists, securing her hands behind the heavy mahogany armchair in Alessandro's private study.
The vault door was sealed shut. Outside, the rain continued to lash against the glass, but inside the soundproofed room, the only noise was the steady, rhythmic ticking of an antique grandfather clock and the sound of Alessandro pouring amber liquid into a crystal tumbler.
Elena pulled against the silk restraints. It was a black Italian silk tie, surprisingly soft against her skin, but tied with meticulous nautical knots that didn't budge an inch.
"Struggling will only chafe your delicate wrists, cara," Alessandro said without turning around.
He took a slow sip of the scotch, then walked around the desk. He had discarded his tuxedo jacket, wearing only his crisp white dress shirt with the top two buttons undone and the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing corded muscle and a sleeve of dark, intricate tattoos that crept from his wrist up under his collar.
He stopped directly in front of her, leaning against the edge of his mahogany desk. His dark eyes bore into hers with hypnotic intensity.
"You have twenty-four hours of security footage showing you studying my penthouse layout," Alessandro said calmly. "You bypassed a biometric lock designed by former Mossad engineers. Who trained you, Elena?"
"No one," Elena spat, glaring at him with defiance. "My father was an antique clockmaker and locksmith. I spent my childhood opening mechanisms far more complex than your toys."
Alessandro tilted his head, his gaze flickering with genuine intrigue. "A clockmaker's daughter who cleans Renaissance oil paintings by day and burglarizes mafia bosses by night. Fascinating."
"Are you going to shoot me or gloat all night?" Elena demanded, refusing to let him see the terror clawing at her throat. "Your guards are downstairs. Call them up. Have them toss me into the East River like you did Maya."
At the mention of Maya, a flicker of cold darkness crossed Alessandro's sculpted features. The amusement vanished, replaced by an aura so lethal the room's temperature seemed to drop ten degrees.
He leaned forward, placing both hands on the armrests of her chair, trapping her within inches of his face. His scent—smoky wood, leather, and untamed masculinity—filled her senses, making her head spin.
"If I wanted Maya dead, her body would never have been found," Alessandro said, his voice dropping into a dangerous whisper. "I don't leave bodies in rivers for cops to dissect, Elena. When I eliminate someone, they vanish into ash."
Elena stared at him, her chest heaving beneath the emerald silk. "You expect me to believe you had nothing to do with it? Her notes named the Moretti family!"
"Her notes named a shipment arriving at Pier 42," Alessandro countered smoothly, his gaze dropping to her throat, where her pulse was fluttering wildly against her pale skin. "A shipment that was intercepted by the Vance cartel—the same cartel that is currently trying to start a war on my streets."
He reached out, his warm, calloused knuckles brushing lightly along the contour of her jawline. Elena gasped at the unexpected contact, trying to pull away, but his touch was magnetic, commanding, sending tiny sparks dancing across her nerve endings.
"Don't touch me," she hissed, though her voice lacked the venom she intended.
"You came into my home uninvited, Elena," Alessandro whispered, his thumb resting gently on her lower lip, pressing down slightly to feel the softness of her mouth. "You don't get to dictate where I put my hands."
Elena bit her lip, trembling with a mixture of rage and a traitorous, uninvited heat pooling deep in her stomach. His proximity was intoxicating, an overwhelming wave of pure, unfiltered dominance.
"So what now?" she whispered, holding his gaze. "A bullet to the back of my head?"
"No," Alessandro stood upright, looking down at her like a king surveying a prize. "I don't waste talent. And I certainly don't discard beauty that has the courage to look me in the eye."
He turned, walking behind her chair. His hands rested lightly on her bare shoulders, his thumbs tracing the delicate curves of her collarbones. Elena's breath hitched.
"Here is my proposition, Elena," Alessandro murmured into her ear, his breath hot against her skin. "Thirty nights."
Elena stiffened. "What?"
"Thirty nights in this penthouse. By my side. As my companion, my guest... and in my bed."
"You're insane," Elena gasped, disgust and shock warring in her chest. "I would rather die."
"Would you?" Alessandro's hands slid slowly down the sleeves of her dress, pausing at her bound wrists. "Thirty nights, Elena. In exchange, I will give you full access to my syndicate's intelligence archives. You will see every surveillance file on the Vance cartel. You will find your sister's real killer. And when the thirty nights are over, you walk out of here a free woman, with enough money to disappear anywhere in the world."
Elena's mind spun. "And if I refuse?"
Alessandro leaned down, his lips brushing the sensitive hollow beneath her earlobe, sending a violent shiver down her spine.
"If you refuse, my men take you to an interrogation room in Brooklyn. They won't be as gentle as I am. And you will die never knowing who truly took your sister's life."
He pulled back, watching her face with ruthless calculation.
"Thirty nights, Elena. Submit to my protection, my rules... and my touch. Do we have a deal?
