Two days ago, the instrument had arrived anonymously inside a weathered leather traveling case, accompanied only by a wax-sealed envelope containing ten thousand euros and an unsigned note demanding the extraction of a foreign rattle within the lower bout.

Chiara adjusted her magnifying visor, her breath catching in her throat. Carefully sliding a fiber-optic inspection prism through the treble F-hole, she peered into the resonant chamber.
