Chapter 3

The Spark Across the Chasm

Mated to the Enemy Alpha King · Seraphina Black · 8 min read

The Grand Hall of Parley inside the Obsidian Citadel was a monument to the cold, unforgiving majesty of the ancient world.

Carved directly from a single massive cavern of black volcanic glass beneath the citadel's central dome, the circular chamber featured three tiers of raised stone benches rising toward vaulted quartz arches. In the center of the polished floor sat the Great Tripartite Table—a colossal slab of triangular black granite, each side fifteen feet long, positioned directly over a circular grate of bronze through which the hot, mineral-scented steam of the abyss drifted in faint, shimmering currents.

At the northern vertex of the triangle sat the delegation of Moon-Crest: King Alden, wearing his heavy mantle of ermine and dark sapphire velvet, flanked by Elder Malachi and three senior council lords. Princess Nyra sat directly to her father's right, dressed in a tailored riding gown of midnight-blue silk bordered with silver chainmail thread, her hands resting quietly in her lap to conceal the uncontrollable trembling that had seized her fingers ever since crossing the bridge.

At the western vertex sat Alpha Garrick and the warlords of Ironspire, their iron-plated pauldrons clanking loudly every time they shifted in their seats, their expressions full of belligerent, posturing arrogance.

And at the southern vertex sat King Darius of Bloodthorn.

Darius sat with terrifying, motionless stillness. Flanked only by his foster brother and supreme commander, General Ronan, the Bloodthorn sovereign had removed his leather brigandine, wearing only a loose-fitting tunic of dark charcoal wool that hung open at the throat, revealing the jagged scar that ran from his collarbone to his ear. He had brought no scrolls, no legal advisors, and no mountain of ledgers. He sat with his elbows resting on the black granite, his large, calloused hands loosely clasped, his amber eyes fixed across the table in an unblinking, laser-focused stare that made every lord in the chamber break into a cold sweat.

And throughout the entire two hours of opening negotiations, Darius had not looked at King Alden once. He had not looked at Garrick.

His eyes had remained pinned entirely, relentlessly, upon Nyra.

Every time Nyra gathered the courage to lift her gaze, the sheer, suffocating intensity of his stare struck her like a physical blow. The air between them felt dense, superheated, crackling with an invisible static charge that made her skin tingle beneath her silk sleeves. She could smell him across the fifteen feet of stone—not the stench of blood that her tutors had told her shadow-wolves carried, but a rich, intoxicating scent of dark woodsmoke, crushed pine needles, and rain-soaked earth that made her wolf whine with desperate, clawing hunger.

*Look away, Nyra,* she commanded herself silently, her fingernails biting into her palms until she felt the sting of broken skin. *Do not look at him. If Garrick notices, if Malachi sees... they will call it treason. They will execute you on the spot.*

"Let the record reflect the formal complaints of the Northern League," Elder Malachi’s dry, raspy voice droned from the northern bench, breaking the heavy silence as he unrolled a three-foot scroll of parchment. "During the past three moons, fourteen agricultural storehouses along the Silver Run have been burned to the ground by raiders bearing southern iron brands. Over ten thousand bushels of grain intended for the Moon-Crest winter reserves were stolen or destroyed. Furthermore, forty-two miners from the Ironspire border quarries were abducted into the southern crags. We demand full restitution: three hundred bars of refined gold, the return of our captives, and a twenty-league demilitarized corridor along the river."

Alpha Garrick slammed his fist down onto the granite table with a concussive crack, his slate eyes flashing with theatrical fury.

"We demand more than gold, Malachi!" Garrick roared, rising halfway out of his seat and leaning toward Darius. "We demand blood! You sit there playing the stoic king, Darius, but we know your shadow-rats operate on your direct orders. You seek to bleed our borders dry before winter so that our people will be too weak to resist your southern hordes. Confess your crimes, or by the Moon Mother, this treaty dies today, and my legions will march across the River Avelon before the week is out!"

A tense, suffocating hush descended over the forty lords seated in the galleries. King Alden winced, while several Neutral Arbiters reached for their ceremonial staffs, ready to call for martial silence.

King Darius did not flinch. He did not blink. He slowly unfolded his hands, leaning back against his high stone chair with a slow, leisurely grace that made Garrick’s outburst look like the tantrum of a spoiled toddler.

"Sit down, Garrick," Darius said, his voice dropping into the chamber with the resonant, earth-shaking timbre of distant thunder. It was not loud, but it possessed a terrifying, primordial Alpha authority that made the stone beneath their boots hum in resonance. "You shout like a wounded boar in a snare. It is unbecoming of a warlord who claims to speak for sixty thousand men."

"You dare—" Garrick snarled, his fangs extending past his lower lip.

"I dare speak the truth, which seems to be a foreign currency in your court," Darius continued smoothly, gesturing to General Ronan with a flick of his index finger.

Ronan reached into a leather pouch at his hip, tossing three heavy objects onto the center of the triangular table. They slid across the polished granite with a sharp metallic clatter, coming to rest before King Alden.

Nyra leaned forward, her silver eyes narrowing as she examined the items. They were not southern iron brands. They were heavy bronze medallions stamped with the sigil of the Broken Fang—the emblem of the notorious Black-Mask Mercenary Guild from the Free Coast. Attached to each medallion was a heavy pouch of mint-stamped coin.

"Those three medallions were recovered two nights ago by my border patrols," Darius explained, his amber eyes shifting from the coin to Nyra, his voice softening by a fraction of a degree as if speaking directly to her tactical intellect. "They were taken from the corpses of eighteen raiders who attempted to burn the granary at Oakhaven. The men were not southern wolves; they were maritime mercenaries hired from the coastal ports. And the gold in those pouches bears the mint-mark of the Ironspire Central Treasury, struck during the fourth month of this very year."

The color drained from Alpha Garrick’s face. He froze, his jaw slackening in stunned shock.

"That... that is an absurd forgery!" Garrick stammered, his bravado instantly evaporating into defensive sputtering. "You fabricated those coins in your southern forges to frame us!"

"My forges cast star-metal and weapons of war, Garrick, not counterfeit bronze coin to frame petty border barons," Darius retorted with cutting, aristocratic contempt. "You hired those mercenaries to raid your own borders, burning empty grain silos to manufacture a crisis that would justify your demands for Moon-Crest’s river-ports. You are not preparing for war with Bloodthorn; you are cannibalizing your neighbor's kingdom from within, using the threat of my legions as a boogeyman to scare an aging king into handing you his crown."

King Alden gasped, his weathered face flushing with sudden, horrified suspicion as he looked from the coins to his prospective son-in-law.

"Garrick... is this true?" Alden whispered, his voice trembling with betrayal. "Did you stage the attacks on our borders?"

"Of course not!" Garrick shouted, panic making his voice shrill. "This is southern deception! Lies meant to divide us before we ratify the Concordat! Nyra, tell your father! Tell him this barbarian is lying!"

All eyes in the grand hall turned toward Princess Nyra.

Nyra sat in agonizing silence, her heart pounding against her ribs. She looked at the coins on the table. She recognized the mint-mark—she had overseen the inspection of those very coins two months ago when Garrick’s caravans had delivered the first shipment of iron. She knew, with sickening, absolute certainty, that Darius was speaking the truth. Garrick had orchestrated the slaughter of northern civilians to force her into his bed and seize her father's kingdom.

She lifted her head, looking straight across the table into Darius’s molten amber eyes.

In that fraction of a second, an unspoken, profound understanding flashed between them. Darius was not asking for her surrender; he was watching to see if she possessed the courage to speak truth in a den of vipers.

"The mint-mark is authentic, Father," Nyra said, her voice clear, steady, and ringing with lethal, undeniable authority across the silent hall. "Those coins were struck in the Ironspire mint in the month of blossoms. They could not have been forged by Bloodthorn without the royal dies kept under lock in Garrick's private vault."

Garrick turned on her with a vicious, venomous glare, his hands shaking with humiliated rage.

"You traitorous little bitch—" Garrick snarled, lunging half a foot across the table toward her.

*CRACK!*

Before Garrick could finish his sentence, the heavy granite table groaned. King Darius had risen to his full, towering height, slamming both palms down onto the stone with such apocalyptic, earth-shattering force that a visible spiderweb of fractures raced across the black obsidian floor.

"If you finish that sentence, Garrick," Darius whispered, his voice vibrating with such terrifying, murderous shadow-magic that the torch flames in the sconces turned from orange to deep, violent purple, "I will ignore the sanctuary of the arbiters, tear your arms from your torso, and feed your entrails to the vultures of the Great Rift before your guards can draw their breath."

The entire chamber held its collective breath in paralyzed terror. No one doubted, for a single heartbeat, that the Sovereign King of Bloodthorn would carry out his vow.

Slowly, Darius straightened his massive frame. His amber eyes swept over the trembling Ironspire lords, then settled once more upon Nyra, burning with a raw, possessive heat that set her entire soul on fire.

"The summit is adjourned for the evening," the High Arbiter proclaimed hastily, banging his staff against the stone. "The delegations will retire to their quarters until the morning bells."

As the lords scrambled toward the arched exits in frantic whispers, Nyra rose from her chair, her legs trembling beneath her silk gown. She could feel Darius’s gaze burning into her back with every step she took, his scent lingering in her lungs like a brand that could never be washed away.
