Chapter 5

The Forbidden Denial

Mated to the Enemy Alpha King · Seraphina Black · 6 min read

For ten intoxicating, breathless seconds, Princess Nyra surrendered completely to the sacred madness of the forbidden bond.

Held against King Darius’s massive chest, surrounded by his heat, his cedar-smoke scent, and the steady, thunderous cadence of his heartbeat, the world felt safe for the first time in her memory. Her wolf Kallisto was purring with deep, vibrating contentment, rubbing her muzzle against the spectral black shadow-wolf that prowled the edges of Darius’s consciousness. As Darius lowered his head, his warm, rough lips brushing reverently against the sensitive curve of her throat right beneath her ear, an electric shiver of pure, unadulterated desire cascaded down Nyra’s spine.

"Mine," Darius growled again, his voice dark, ragged, and thick with a possessive ferocity that vibrated directly against her collarbone. His large hands slid from her waist up the curves of her ribs, his fingers splaying across her back as if he intended to absorb her directly into his soul. "I will tear this citadel from the stone before I let that iron mongrel touch you again. You are coming with me to the southern peaks. Tonight."

The sheer arrogance of his declaration shattered the hypnotic spell like a hammer hitting glass.

The reality of their situation rushed back into Nyra’s mind with the brutal, freezing force of a mountain blizzard.

*No!* her rational mind screamed, cold dread seizing her throat. *If I go with him, my father will be overthrown! Ironspire will unleash their legions on our border! The council will declare me a traitor, and the prophecy will burn both kingdoms to the ground!*

With a desperate, shuddering cry of pure agony, Nyra pressed both palms against Darius’s broad chest, channeling every ounce of her lycan strength to shove him backward.

Darius stumbled back two paces, his amber eyes blinking in disoriented shock, his chest heaving as if he had been physically struck. His pupils were still dilated with predatory hunger, his claws partially extended through his leather gloves, his breath coming in ragged, white plumes of steam in the midnight air.

"Nyra..." Darius rasped, stepping forward again, reaching out a trembling hand. "What are you doing? You felt it. The bond is complete. It is ancient. It cannot be denied."

"Stay back!" Nyra cried, dropping into a defensive crouch and scooping her silver hunting dagger from the stone floor, leveling the point directly at his heart. Tears of blinding, unbearable torment spilled from her silver eyes, tracking hot paths down her cold cheeks. "Stay away from me, Darius! By the Moon Mother, do not take another step!"

Darius stopped, his handsome face twisting with raw, wounded disbelief. The supreme sovereign who had stared down armies without flinching looked as though she had just plunged a poisoned spear through his ribs.

"Why are you fighting this?" Darius demanded, his voice cracking with unfiltered desperation. "You despise Garrick. You know he is a traitor who sold your people to mercenaries. I saw into your soul, Nyra! I felt your loneliness, your fear, your courage... and you felt mine! We were made for each other before the mountains were formed!"

"And what of my people, Darius?!" Nyra sobbed, her hand shaking violently as she gripped the hilt of her blade. "What happens to the thirty thousand civilians of Moon-Crest when their crown princess runs away with the Enemy King of Bloodthorn?! Garrick will march his armies into our valleys tomorrow! My father is old and sick—he will die of grief, and our cities will burn to the ash! Do you think our love is worth thirty thousand corpses?!"

Darius’s jaw tightened into an iron slab, his amber eyes burning with fierce, unyielding warrior resolve.

"My legions would protect your people, Nyra!" Darius countered fiercely, stepping toward her despite the blade. "I would march forty thousand shadow-wolves into your valleys not as conquerors, but as your army! We would crush Garrick’s host in a single afternoon and drown his iron mines in their own blood!"

"And what of the prophecy, Darius?!" Nyra screamed, the words tearing from her throat in a ragged gasp.

The terrace went deathly silent.

Even the mountain wind seemed to freeze in the chasm, holding its breath beneath the jagged peaks.

Darius went utterly rigid. The fire in his eyes flickered, replaced by a dark, chilling shadow of ancient dread.

*The Twin Moons Prophecy.*

For four centuries, every wolf on the continent had been raised on the terrifying verses of the Great Concordat: *When the White Moon of the North bleeds into the Shadow-Thorn of the South, the sky shall rend in twain, the mountain roots shall crumble, and the wolves of the earth shall drown in an ocean of ash.*

"You know the words as well as I do," Nyra whispered, her voice dropping into a broken, trembling whimper. "The elders have preached it for ten generations. Our bloodlines are cursed to destroy each other. If we claim this bond, the world will call it an abomination. The high councils of all three realms will unite against us, and our union will trigger the very apocalypse we came here to prevent."

Darius stared at her, his broad chest rising and falling in violent, heavy rhythms. For a long, agonizing moment, the silence between them was heavier than a tombstone.

Then, slowly, Darius shook his head.

"The prophecy is a lie, Nyra," Darius spoke, his deep baritone carrying a strange, haunting certainty that pierced through her terror. "My grandfather spent his entire life studying the original First Dynasty codices before the Concordat burned the archives. The verses were altered. The elders twisted the words to keep our kingdoms divided by fear, because fear is the only weapon that keeps weak men in power."

He took a slow step forward, disregarding the dagger completely, letting the sharp silver tip press directly against the leather over his breastbone until a tiny drop of dark blood welled against the silk.

"I will not force you to choose me tonight, Princess," Darius whispered softly, his amber eyes drinking in her tear-streaked face with infinite, heartbreaking tenderness. "I will not make you a traitor to your blood. But swear to me... swear upon the Moon Mother that you will not let that iron swine touch you. Swear that you will not let him claim what belongs to me."

Nyra swallowed the hard lump in her throat, her heart breaking into a thousand shattered pieces.

"I swear it, Darius," Nyra whispered, her voice barely audible over the wind. "I will never let Garrick claim me. Even if I have to slit his throat on our wedding night."

A faint, proud smile touched Darius’s lips. He leaned down, ignoring the dagger, and pressed a single, burning kiss to her forehead—a kiss that branded her soul with fire and sealed their forbidden pact for eternity.

"Then keep your dagger sharp, my Queen," Darius murmured against her brow. "Because tomorrow, this summit will burn. And when the ash settles, I will be waiting for you."

Footsteps suddenly echoed from the interior corridor—the heavy, clanking march of iron boots, accompanied by Garrick’s slurred, angry shouting: *"Nyra! Where the hell are you hiding?!"*

Darius stepped back into the shadows of the terrace balustrade. With a final, smoldering look from his molten amber eyes, he vaulted over the edge into the five-thousand-foot abyss, disappearing into the swirling midnight mist like a phantom born of shadow.

Nyra stood alone on the freezing terrace, her skin burning where his lips had touched her, her mate-mark pulsing with liquid fire beneath her collarbone, and her trembling hand holding a dagger tipped with the blood of the enemy king she was now fated to love.
