Chapter 4

Awakening of the Blood-Thorn Bond

Mated to the Enemy Alpha King · Seraphina Black · 6 min read

The midnight mist that rolled in from the Great Rift was thick, frigid, and smelled faintly of snow and sulfur, wrapping the glass galleries of the Obsidian Citadel in an ethereal shroud of silver and black.

Inside the guest quarters assigned to the Moon-Crest delegation, the atmosphere was thick with suffocating tension. In the adjoining solar, King Alden and Elder Malachi were engaged in a vicious, hushed argument behind closed doors. Malachi insisted that regardless of the mercenary revelations, the alliance with Ironspire must be consummated to preserve religious orthodoxy, while Alden wept over the realization that he had nearly sold his daughter to a treacherous butcher. Alpha Garrick, thoroughly humiliated by the afternoon's exposure, had locked himself in the western armory with forty of his heavily armed brutes, drinking heavily and snarling threats of vengeance against anyone who crossed his path.

Nyra could bear the suffocating confinement of the chambers no longer.

Slipping past the dozing guards stationed in the corridor, she moved with the silent, ghost-like stealth of an elite border scout, gliding through the labyrinthine basalt corridors until she reached the outer terrace known as the Balcony of the Void.

Perched four thousand feet above the canyon floor, the terrace was a wide crescent of polished black stone guarded only by a low marble balustrade. The wind up here was fierce and biting, whipping Nyra’s dark hair into a wild tangle around her face, cooling the feverish heat that had been burning beneath her skin for hours. She leaned against the cold stone, taking in deep, shuddering lungfuls of the icy mountain air, trying to drown out the relentless, agonizing clamor of her wolf.

*He is close,* Kallisto whimpered, pacing restlessly across the floor of Nyra's consciousness, her ears pinned back, her tail sweeping in desperate agitation. *He is here. The air belongs to him.*

"Be quiet, Kallisto," Nyra whispered fiercely into the dark, wrapping her wool cloak tightly around her shivering shoulders. "He is our enemy. He is the King of Bloodthorn. If anyone sees us even thinking of him, our people will be slaughtered in the crossfire."

"Your wolf is wiser than you are, Princess."

The deep, rumbling baritone emerged from the swirling mist behind her with the sudden, shocking impact of an avalanche.

Nyra spun on her heel, her right hand dropping instinctively to the secret sheath inside her left boot. In a fraction of a second, the five-inch curved silver dagger was in her grip, its polished blade flashing in the moonlight as she brought it up in a defensive combat stance.

Standing ten paces away at the edge of the stone stairs stood King Darius.

He wore no heavy armor, only a dark tunic of boiled shadow-leather and high riding boots, his dark hair ruffled by the mountain gale. He had approached with such absolute, unnatural silence that even her heightened lycan hearing had failed to detect his footsteps over the sound of the wind. In the dim silver light filtering through the clouds, his amber eyes burned with that same terrifying, molten luminescence that had paralyzed her in the council hall.

"Lower the steel, Nyra," Darius said softly, taking a slow, measured step forward. His hands were open and empty at his sides, but his posture radiated an overwhelming, predatory dominance that made every instinct in Nyra’s body scream to either run or submit. "You know as well as I do that you cannot use that blade against me."

"Do not test me, King Darius," Nyra hissed, her voice trembling despite her iron discipline as she held the silver dagger level with his throat. "You are thirty leagues outside your territory, standing in the private quarters of the northern delegation. If I scream, eighty Ironspire guards will flood this terrace before you can take another breath."

Darius stopped three paces away. A slow, faint smirk touched the corner of his chiseled, stubbled mouth, his gaze dropping briefly to the dagger before rising to meet her liquid silver eyes.

"If you scream, eighty Ironspire guards will arrive," Darius agreed smoothly, his deep voice vibrating in the hollow of her chest. "And I will slaughter every single one of them with my bare hands and throw their corpses into the gorge before they can lay a finger on you. But you will not scream, Princess. Because your wolf would rather die than see a single drop of my blood spilled upon this stone."

Nyra’s breath hitched. She wanted to deny it. She wanted to curse him, to spit in his face and tell him that she hated him with every fiber of her being. But the words turned to ash in her mouth.

Because Kallisto was crying out in her mind, pleading with her, begging her to drop the weapon: *Do not cut him! He is our King! He is our mate!*

"Why are you here?" Nyra whispered, her voice cracking with raw, desperate exhaustion. "What do you want from me?"

"I want the truth," Darius answered, his voice dropping into a low, intense rumble that seemed to reverberate directly against her soul. He took another step forward, closing the distance between them until he was standing less than an arm's length away. The heat radiating from his massive body was overwhelming, an inferno of cedar, smoke, and primal power that completely drowned out the freezing mountain gale. "I want to hear you say what happened in that courtyard the moment our eyes met across the bridge."

"Nothing happened," Nyra lied, her voice shaking violently as she pressed the flat of the dagger against his chest, right over his hammering heart. "It was an elemental surge from the volcanic vents. Nothing more."

Darius did not pull away. Instead, he reached out his large, calloused right hand.

His fingers moved with deliberate, agonizing slowness, giving her every opportunity to strike, to step back, to plunge the silver blade into his flesh. But Nyra stood frozen, paralyzed by a terrifying, magnetic pull that completely overrode her conscious will.

Darius’s fingertips brushed against the bare skin of her wrist, right where the pulse was hammering like a trapped war-drum.

The moment skin touched skin, the world ceased to exist.

A blinding, cataclysmic explosion of metaphysical energy ripped through the night. It felt as though the sky had cracked open and poured liquid silver and molten starlight directly into their veins. An involuntary, breathless gasp tore from Nyra’s throat as a visible shockwave of celestial light flared across their arms, racing up her shoulder, through her collarbone, and slamming directly into her soul with the unstoppable force of a tidal wave.

The sacred mate-bond—ancient, unbreakable, and terrifyingly primordial—snapped shut between them.

Every secret barrier, every defensive wall, every lie she had ever told herself was instantly pulverized into dust. Through the blinding link, Nyra felt the raw, unfiltered majesty of Darius’s spirit: his ferocious protective fury, his profound tactical brilliance, the crushing weight of the kingdom he carried on his shoulders, and above all else, an all-consuming, breathless adoration for her that burned with the heat of a thousand dying suns.

And in that same heartbeat, Darius felt her: her fierce warrior courage, her boundless empathy for the starving commoners of Moon-Crest, her terror of the forced betrothal, and the wild, untamed fire of her white wolf Kallisto.

Darius groaned—a deep, ragged sound of pure, unadulterated ecstasy and agonizing hunger that ripped from the depths of his chest. His fingers slid from her wrist to her hand, gently disarming her, letting the silver dagger slip from her limp fingers and clatter harmlessly onto the basalt stone.

Before Nyra could draw another breath, Darius closed the remaining space between them, his large, scarred hands cupping the sides of her face, his calloused thumbs stroking her trembling cheekbones with breathtaking reverence.

"You," Darius whispered, his amber eyes dilated until they were pools of burning, liquid gold, his voice shaking with an emotion so vast and overwhelming it stripped away all royal majesty and left only the raw, starving male beneath. "The Moon Mother has answered every prayer I never had the courage to speak. You are my queen. My mate. Mine."

Nyra’s knees buckled under the sheer, suffocating weight of the bond. She would have collapsed onto the stone, but Darius caught her effortlessly, pulling her flush against his massive, muscular chest, his arms wrapping around her waist like bands of forged star-metal.

Held against his heart, feeling the violent, synchronized hammer of their two pulses beating as one single life, Nyra buried her face in the crook of his neck. Her senses were flooded with his scent, her hands involuntarily gripping the rough wool of his tunic, her soul weeping with a relief so absolute and profound that for three glorious, terrifying seconds, she forgot the war, forgot her kingdom, and forgot that she was embracing the man she had been taught to destroy.
