Chapter 1

The Blood Moon Run

The Exiled Wolf Princess · Silas Thorne & Lucian Grey · 7 min read

The crimson light of the Blood Moon bled through the ancient canopy of hemlock and pine, painting the mist-drenched forest floor in shades of fresh butchery.

Kaelen Vance ran like a ghost possessed. Her bare feet slapped against damp moss and jagged slate, but she felt neither cold nor fatigue. Her lungs burned with every ragged breath, tasting the ozone of impending thunder and the copper tang of her own blood where a silver-tipped crossbow bolt had grazed her left bicep an hour earlier.

Behind her, the baying of the Silverfang hunting hounds echoed through the ravine—deep, guttural, and relentlessly closing the distance.

*Faster, Kaelen,* her inner wolf snarled, paws phantom against her ribs. *If Christian's enforcers drag us back to the fortress, we die on the sacrificial altar.*

Kaelen pushed herself harder. She was twenty-two, slender and athletic, built like a dancer with the lethal reflexes of a born scout. Her wild, silver-streaked dark hair whipped behind her like smoke, and beneath her torn leather hunting tunic, her pale skin was covered in sweat, mud, and ancient runic wards her late mother had tattooed into her flesh before the massacre.

Eighteen months ago, Alpha Christian Grey of the Silverfang Pack had slaughtered her family to seize the Moonstone—the sacred talisman that anchored their bloodline. Kaelen had fled with the encrypted cipher locked inside her mind, surviving as a rogue in the neutral badlands. But tonight, on the eve of the decennial Blood Moon, Christian’s trackers had finally cornered her.

Ahead, through the veil of swirling white mist, the trees suddenly gave way to a towering wall of jagged obsidian stone pillars, each thirty feet high, carved with the fearsome snarling visage of a two-headed wolf.

The Blackwood Border.

The sovereign boundary of the Midnight Blood Lycan Pack—the most ruthless, barbaric, and feared pack on the entire northern continent. A territory where any trespassing wolf was butchered on sight, their pelts hung from the fortress palisades as a warning to the civilized clans.

To turn back meant enslavement and execution at Christian’s hands. To cross meant certain death by the claws of the legendary Lycan King.

Kaelen didn't hesitate. She threw herself across the boundary line, landing hard on the pine needles of the forbidden territory.

The moment her skin crossed the boundary, the air changed. The ambient temperature dropped ten degrees, heavy with the suffocating scent of ancient cedar, wet stone, and raw, untamed apex predator. The hunting hounds behind her suddenly skidded to a dead halt at the tree line, whimpering in sheer, unadulterated terror, refusing to take a single step past the obsidian pillars.

Kaelen stumbled to her feet, clutching her bleeding arm, leaning against a mossy boulder.

"They stopped," she whispered, her chest heaving with desperate relief.

"They stopped because they value their lives, little rogue."

The voice seemed to emerge from the very earth beneath her feet. It was deep, low-timbered, and vibrating with an ancient, terrifying frequency that made the teeth in Kaelen's jaw ache and her inner wolf drop instantly to her belly in instinctual submission.

Kaelen spun around, drawing the curved bone-hilted hunting knife from her boot.

Standing on the ridge ten feet above her was a nightmare carved from muscle, shadow, and bone.

The Lycan King. Lucian Blackwood.

He was colossal—easily six feet five inches tall, with broad, powerful shoulders that blocked out the crimson light of the moon. He wore dark leather trousers and an unbuttoned warrior's vest of boiled hide and wolf fur, leaving his massive, heavily scarred chest exposed to the cold wind. Thick, sculpted pectoral muscles tapered down to washboard abdomens and narrow, powerful hips. Across his collarbone and throat were deep, jagged scars from ancient alpha challenges, and along his right arm ran dark, tribal tattoos depicting the slaughter of rival clans.

His face was an unyielding masterpiece of primal brutality: sharp, aristocratic cheekbones, an unyielding square jaw dusted with dark stubble, and hair black as raven feathers curling wildly around his temples.

But it was his eyes that froze Kaelen’s blood.

They were not the golden eyes of an ordinary werewolf. They were luminous, molten obsidian rings surrounding irises of burning amber and liquid gold. They glowed in the dark like twin flames of a funeral pyre.

The moment their eyes met, something cataclysmic detonated between them.

A violent, electric shockwave ripped through Kaelen’s chest, so powerful it knocked the breath clean out of her lungs. Her inner wolf let out an ear-splitting, joyous howl that echoed through every fiber of her soul. The air between them crackled with visible golden sparks of primal energy, suffocating and intoxicating.

The Mate Bond.

The sacred, ancient, undeniable mate bond—connecting a rogue white-wolf exile to the most terrifying, bloodthirsty Lycan ruler on the continent.

Lucian’s molten amber eyes widened. A low, thunderous growl rumbled from the depths of his massive chest, a sound so guttural it shook the very rocks around them. His nostrils flared, drawing in the scent of her sweat, her blood, and the pure, sweet aroma of winter mint and blooming wild mountain snowdrops.

"Mate," Lucian snarled, the word tearing from his throat like a primal battle cry.

Before Kaelen could run, before she could raise her blade, Lucian moved with the impossible speed of a god. He didn't jump; he blurred through the mist like a shadow.

In a fraction of a second, his massive frame collided with hers.

Kaelen was swept off her feet and slammed onto the soft bed of pine needles. The wind was knocked from her lungs with a sharp gasp. Before she could recover, Lucian pinned her completely beneath his overwhelming weight.

His massive chest crushed her breasts; his muscular thighs clamped around hers like iron vices, completely trapping her legs. His large, calloused hand clamped around both of her wrists, pinning them above her head against the mossy earth with effortless, unbreakable strength.

"Get off me, you beast!" Kaelen snarled, her fangs elongating, her hazel eyes flashing silver as she fought with feral fury, thrashing against his hold.

Lucian didn't flinch. A slow, terrifying smirk of pure, dark triumph curved his sculpted lips.

He leaned down, burying his face into the crook of her neck, inhaling her scent so deeply his massive chest expanded against hers. His warm breath was scalding hot against her bare skin, smelling of cedarwood, crushed juniper, and dark, intoxicating desire.

"Fight me all you want, little she-wolf," Lucian growled against her throat, his teeth grazing the sensitive tendon right over her carotid artery. "You broke into my forest. You brought your sweet blood to my feet. And now the Moon has given you to me."

He pressed his hips firmly against hers, and through her leather tunic and his rough hide trousers, Kaelen felt the thick, heavy, rock-hard length of his primal arousal pressing demandingly into the cleft of her thighs.

A violent, traitorous jolt of liquid heat shot straight through Kaelen’s core, shocking her to the very marrow of her bones.

"You don't own me!" she gasped, trembling beneath his furnace heat.

Lucian lifted his head, his molten golden eyes boring into her soul with possessive madness.

"You are my Queen, Kaelen," he whispered darkly, his thumb tracing the fierce line of her trembling jaw. "And by the time this Blood Moon sets, you will howl my name to the stars."

Before she could speak, his mouth crashed down onto hers in a fierce, possessive, claiming kiss that tasted of wild mint, raw power, and inescapable destiny.
The crimson light of the Blood Moon illuminated the mist rising from the gorge below. Kaelen lay pinned beneath Lucian's massive frame, her chest rising and falling in violent, ragged gasps. The scent of him was all-consuming: dark pine, crushed cedar berries, iron, and a raw, untamed apex heat that made her inner wolf whimper in desperate submission.

"Look at me, Kaelen," Lucian commanded, his voice a low, gravelly vibration that sent shivers racing down her spine.

Kaelen forced her eyes open, meeting his burning amber gaze.

"You ran across three mountain territories to escape Christian Grey," Lucian murmured, his hand sliding down from her wrists to cup the side of her neck, his thumb resting gently over her racing pulse. "You bled for your freedom. But you crossed into my kingdom, little wolf. And in this forest, freedom has a price."

"What price?" Kaelen whispered, her throat dry, her body trembling with traitorous heat where his hips pressed into hers.

"Your total surrender," Lucian growled against her lips. "To your mate. To your King."

He lifted her effortlessly in his arms, cradling her against his massive chest as he rose to his full, terrifying height. The Silverfang hounds on the opposite ridge whimpered and fled into the dark as Lucian turned toward the high crags of Blackwood Keep, carrying his newly claimed Queen into the night.
The mountain trail ahead wound through ancient groves of weeping birch and towering black pine. As Lucian climbed the ridge with Kaelen in his arms, the night air was filled with the distant, reverent howls of the Midnight Blood pack sentries echoing from peak to peak. They were announcing the return of their Alpha King—and the arrival of the foreign female whose silver scent had ignited the sacred Blood Moon. Kaelen clutched Lucian's muscular shoulders, her heart hammering against her ribs, sensing that her life as an isolated rogue was over. She was entering a realm of ancient bloodlines, lethal pride, and an undeniable passion that would consume her entirely.
