Chapter 3

The Scent of a Luna

The Exiled Wolf Princess · Silas Thorne & Lucian Grey · 7 min read

The royal tower suite of Blackwood Keep sat perched at the highest point of the fortress, carved into the living bedrock overlooking the endless expanse of the northern pine sea.

The chamber was massive, dominated by a monumental stone fireplace roaring with fragrant birch logs that cast warm, dancing amber shadows across dark timber floors and thick bear-pelt rugs. A massive four-poster bed platform carved from ancient oak was draped in heavy velvet quilts and white wolf furs.

In the center of the adjoining bathing alcove, an oversized copper tub steamed with piping-hot water infused with mountain salts, crushed pine needles, and sweet lavender oils.

Kaelen leaned back against the warm copper rim, letting the steaming water soak away the grime, the dried blood, and the terrifying exhaustion of the past five days. Her silver-streaked dark hair was piled loosely on top of her head, damp curls clinging to the pale curve of her neck.

Her wrists, though free of the wolf-iron, were still marked with tender crimson rings.

She closed her eyes, breathing in the steam, her mind spinning.

*Fated Mate to the Lycan King.*

It felt like a fever dream. For eighteen months, she had lived like an animal in the shadows, hunted by Christian Grey's trackers, trusting no one. Now, she was housed in the royal suite of the most powerful fortress in the world, claimed by a man whose mere whisper made hardened chieftains tremble.

Her inner wolf stirred beneath her ribs, humming with deep, contented warmth. Her wolf was not afraid of Lucian. Her wolf craved him. Every time Lucian looked at her, her wolf wanted to bare her throat, roll onto her back, and welcome his claiming bite.

"Traitor," Kaelen muttered to her own instincts, splashing warm water over her shoulders. "He's an arrogant warlord."

The heavy oak door of the suite clicked open.

Kaelen’s eyes snapped open. She sat up in the water, pulling her knees to her chest as the steam parted.

Stepping through the threshold was Lucian.

He had removed his velvet cloak and formal tunic. He wore only thin black linen trousers slung low on his hips, his muscular chest and sculpted abdominals bare in the firelight. Across his bronze skin, the tribal tattoos seemed to writhe in the flickering light. He held a crystal carafe of dark spiced mead and two horn cups.

His glowing amber eyes locked onto Kaelen sitting in the copper tub.

The air in the chamber instantly thickened. The room felt suddenly starved of oxygen.

Lucian stopped at the edge of the bathing alcove. His nostrils flared, drawing in the heavy, intoxicating aroma of steaming water, wild mint, and the sweet, musky heat of an aroused she-wolf in her prime.

A low, guttural growl rumbled from the depths of his chest. His pupils dilated until his eyes were nearly solid obsidian.

"Get out," Kaelen said, her voice trembling slightly despite her best efforts to sound commanding. "A civilized king knocks before entering a lady's bath."

Lucian took two slow, measured strides toward the tub, setting the carafe and cups onto a nearby slate table.

"I never claimed to be civilized, cara," Lucian murmured, his deep voice thick with raspy, primal hunger. "And this is my keep. There is no door in this fortress that closes against me."

He stopped at the rim of the copper tub, towering over her, looking down into the clear water.

His eyes tracked the water droplets glistening on her bare collarbones, the soft swell of her full breasts rising above the surface with her rapid breaths, and the delicate dip of her waist beneath the water. The sheer intensity in his gaze was like physical heat, making Kaelen’s skin flush a deep, rosy pink.

"You shouldn't look at me like that," she whispered, her hands clutching her knees.

Lucian crouched beside the tub, resting his large, calloused forearms on the warm copper rim. He was barely six inches from her face. His breath smelled of spiced mead and dark cedar, washing over her lips.

"I have waited ten years for the Moon to reveal my mate, Kaelen," Lucian whispered, his hand reaching into the steaming water.

Kaelen gasped as his warm, rough fingers brushed against her submerged knee. His touch was electric, sending a sharp jolt of liquid heat straight between her thighs. His hand slid slowly up the inside of her thigh, moving with agonizing deliberation, before coming to rest on her hip beneath the water.

"Every night, my Lycan beast paced the parapets, howling into the empty dark," Lucian murmured, his amber eyes burning into hers. "And now you are here. In my tub. In my bedchamber. Smelling like the snow and wild flowers."

"I am not a prize to be claimed, Lucian," Kaelen breathed, her chest heaving as his thumb traced the curve of her hip. "I am an alpha's daughter. I have an army of my own to avenge."

"I don't want a prize, Kaelen," Lucian growled softly, his other hand reaching out to gently lift her chin. "I want a partner. An equal. A woman who looks into the jaws of the Blood King and spits in his face."

He leaned forward, his mouth closing over hers in a slow, intoxicating kiss.

Kaelen’s breath hitched in her throat. She had intended to bite him, to push him away, to preserve her pride. But the moment his warm, firm lips met hers, her defenses dissolved into ash. His tongue swept into her mouth, tasting of mead and dark desire, deep and commanding.

A soft whimper tore from Kaelen's throat. Her hands rose from the water, her wet fingers tangling in the dark, thick hair at the nape of his neck, pulling him deeper into the kiss.

Lucian let out a low sound of feral approval. His hand on her hip tightened, lifting her slightly in the water until her breasts pressed against the copper rim, flush against his chest.

His mouth broke the kiss only to trail down her jawline to the sensitive hollow of her neck. His teeth grazed the skin right over her mating pulse, his tongue soothing the sting with agonizing heat.

"You want me, Kaelen," Lucian growled against her skin, his hand sliding down to cup her wet buttocks beneath the water, his fingers teasing the cleft of her thighs. "Your body is weeping for my mark right now."

"Lucian... please..." Kaelen gasped, her head falling back against the copper rim, completely undone by the sensory onslaught.

Lucian stood up slowly, stepping back from the tub. His chest heaved with ragged breaths, his jaw clenched in an iron battle for self-control.

He reached for a thick fur-lined drying robe, holding it open before the tub.

"Step out, Kaelen," Lucian commanded, his voice thick with gravelly need. "Before I forget my honor and take you against this stone floor.
The fire in the royal bedchamber crackled softly, throwing dancing golden embers across the dark timber floorboards.

Julian had wrapped Kaelen in a heavy robe of thick white wolf fur, sitting her gently on the edge of the carved oak bed. He knelt before her on the bear-pelt rug, holding a silver cup of warm spiced mead to her lips.

"Drink, Kaelen," he murmured softly, his voice full of tender authority. "The mead will soothe the chill in your blood."

Kaelen took a slow sip, the honey, cinnamon, and warm clove melting across her tongue, spreading a soothing heat through her exhausted limbs.

She looked at the massive Lycan warrior kneeling at her feet. In the council hall, he was a terrifying monster who commanded an army of killers; here in the firelight, he touched her with a patience that took her breath away.

"Why do they fear you so much, Lucian?" she asked softly.

"Because I do what is necessary to protect my blood," Lucian replied, taking her cup and placing it on the bedside table. He reached up, gently tucking a damp silver-streaked curl behind her ear. "For centuries, the southern packs treated the Midnight Blood as beasts. I taught them that beasts have teeth. But with you, Kaelen... I have no desire for war. I only desire your heart."

Kaelen looked into his molten amber eyes, feeling the ancient walls around her soul begin to crumble.
The roaring stone hearth cast long, hypnotic shadows across the dark timber floorboards. Kaelen sat wrapped in the white wolf-fur robe, watching the glowing birch logs pop and sizzle in the grate. The tension that had coiled in her stomach for eighteen months seemed to melt in the warmth of the mountain sanctuary.

She touched the soft fur at her collar, feeling the lingering scent of cedar and pine that clung to the garment. Lucian had placed his own mantle around her shoulders, marking her before his ancestors and his gods.

When she looked toward the wide bed of black bear pelts, her inner wolf let out a contented, purring sound. There was no fear left in her soul—only a rising, golden curiosity and an electric yearning for the man who ruled this mountain.
