The heavy iron-reinforced gates of Blackwood Keep groaned shut, their massive wooden timbers vibrating as the iron portcullis slammed into the flagstones with the finality of a guillotine.
Blackwood Keep was an ancient, sprawling mountain fortress carved directly from the monolithic obsidian peaks of the Northern Spine. Torches flared in iron sconces every ten feet, casting flickering crimson light across towering stone archways, draped in heavy black banners bearing the silver coiled wolf of the Midnight Blood Pack.
Kaelen Vance was escorted down the grand corridor between two towering Lycan warriors clad in black steel plate armor.
Her wrists were bound behind her in wolf-iron—a dense, cold metal forged with traces of silver that dulled her inner wolf's strength, sending a dull, throbbing ache up her forearms. Her leather tunic was torn, her bare arms smudged with dried blood and mud, but she refused to bow her head. She walked with a predator's silent, predatory stride, her silver-flecked hazel eyes cold, proud, and unflinching.
Whispers rippled through the assembled pack members lining the corridor. Hundreds of battle-hardened Lycans, shieldmaidens, and scarred berserkers stared at her in utter astonishment.
"A rogue she-wolf?" one scarred warrior muttered, touching his battle axe. "How did she breach the northern boundary alive?"
"Look at her scent," a female tracker whispered in awe, her nostrils flaring. "The King carried her across the bridge in his own arms. She smells of the sacred bond."
The heavy double doors of the Great Hall were thrown open by two hulking guards.
The Great Hall was vast, with fifty-foot vaulted timber ceilings supported by monolithic stone pillars carved in the likeness of howling wolves. Down the center of the hall, long banquet tables of rough-hewn oak were packed with pack elders, clan chieftains, and elite warriors. At the far end of the hall, raised upon a three-tiered stone dais, stood the Throne of Bones—a colossal seat fashioned from the petrified antlers of ancient elk and the iron broadswords of defeated rival alphas.
Sitting upon the throne was Lucian Blackwood.
He had bathed away the mud of the forest. He wore a tailored tunic of heavy black velvet trimmed in dark wolf fur, with silver clasps shaped like wolf claws securing a flowing charcoal cloak across his broad shoulders. His dark hair was brushed back, accentuating his sharp, aristocratic jawline and the lethal scar across his temple. In his right hand, he held a heavy silver goblet of dark wine; his left rested casually on the pommel of a massive broadsword sheathed at his side.
Standing beside the throne was Darian, a towering warrior with bronze skin and sharp golden eyes—Lucian’s second-in-command and Pack Beta—alongside Elder Moira, a blind, ancient seer wrapped in white furs, her sightless milky eyes fixed unerringly on Kaelen as she entered.
The two guards pushed Kaelen forward, forcing her to the foot of the stone dais.
"Kneel before the Alpha King, rogue," one of the guards commanded, placing a heavy gauntleted hand on her shoulder to force her down.
Kaelen didn't budge. With a sudden, fluid twist of her hips, she wrenched her shoulder free, stepping out of the guard's grip. Her silver-flecked eyes locked onto Lucian on the high throne, burning with defiant fire.
"I kneel to no one," Kaelen’s voice rang clear and unwavering through the cavernous hall, carrying to the highest rafters. "Especially not to a barbaric warlord who binds women in chains."
A collective gasp swept through the hall. Swords cleared their scabbards with metallic rasps. Several elders surged to their feet in outrage.
"Insolent stray!" Elder Vane, a grey-bearded chieftain with a missing eye, roared from the front table. "She has trespassed on sacred soil during the Blood Moon! By pack law, she must be stripped of her pelt and thrown from the parapets!"
"Silence!"
The command was not shouted, but spoken with such immense, vibrating alpha power that the very air in the hall seemed to condense. The torches in their sconces flickered and dimmed, and every warrior, elder, and chieftain dropped their gaze, sinking lower into their seats in instinctual submission.
Lucian rose from the throne.
He descended the three stone steps with slow, predatory grace, his heavy leather boots silent on the stone. He towered over Kaelen, his obsidian-amber eyes glowing with that same scorching, possessive fire that had claimed her beneath the Blood Moon.
The proximity of him sent an electric jolt straight to Kaelen's core. The intoxicating scent of him—smoke, pine, leather, and untamed masculine power—washed over her senses, making her knees tremble despite her fierce pride.
Lucian stopped barely an inch from her. His large, warm hand reached out, his long fingers cupping her chin, forcing her face up. His thumb brushed over her parted crimson lips, testing their soft warmth.
"You have a very sharp tongue, little rogue," Lucian murmured, his deep voice dropping into a low, intimate rumble meant only for her ears. "And an even sharper spirit."
"Remove these chains, Moretti," Kaelen hissed, glaring into his eyes, refusing to look away. "Or kill me now. Because if you keep me locked in this keep, I will slit your throat the moment you close your eyes."
A slow, wicked smile spread across Lucian’s sculpted lips. A dark, resonant chuckle rumbled in his chest—a sound of pure, unadulterated pleasure.
"My name is Blackwood, cara," Lucian corrected softly, his thumb pressing lightly against her throat where her pulse fluttered wildly. "And you will not slit my throat, Kaelen. Because your wolf knows what mine knows."
He stepped behind her. With one effortless, terrifying flex of his bare hands, Lucian grabbed the heavy wolf-iron chains between her wrists and snapped the forged metal links in two with a deafening *CRACK* that echoed through the silent hall!
Kaelen gasped, her hands springing free as the broken iron clattered onto the stone floor. She rubbed her raw wrists, staring at him in shock.
Lucian turned to face his stunned council, his voice booming with absolute, unquestioned sovereignty:
"Look well upon her, elders of the Midnight Blood," Lucian announced, his arm sliding around Kaelen's waist, pulling her flush against his hard hip in front of the entire assembly. "This is Kaelen Vance, daughter of the White Wolf line. She is not a prisoner. She is not a stray. She is my Fated Mate. The Queen of this pack. And anyone who draws a blade in her presence will answer to my claws.
As Lucian carried Kaelen through the grand stone courtyard of Blackwood Keep, the torches flared against the damp granite walls. Beta Darian stepped forward, bowing his head with deep reverence before his Alpha King.
"The border enforcers report that Christian Grey's trackers have set up camp along the southern ridge, Alpha," Darian reported, his sharp eyes assessing Kaelen with quiet respect. "They demand an audience before dawn."
"Let them freeze in the mud," Lucian replied coldly, not slowing his stride. "Double the sentries on the eastern gate. If any Silverfang dog steps past the obsidian pillars, hang their carcass from the battlements."
Lucian looked down at Kaelen cradled in his arms, his thumb brushing a smear of ash from her cheek. "You are safe here, Kaelen. No blade in this territory will touch a single hair on your head. My word is iron."
Kaelen looked up into his unyielding, scarred face. Despite the cold brutality of his pack, the warmth radiating from his body was an undeniable sanctuary. She rested her head against his shoulder, allowing herself to breathe for the first time in eighteen months.
Later that night, outside the high stone doors of the Great Hall, Beta Darian walked beside Lucian through the vaulted colonnade.
"The pack warriors are restless, Alpha," Darian murmured in a low, respectful voice. "They sense the power of her lineage. The White Wolf line has not been seen in the northern territories since the Great Shattering four centuries ago. If Christian Grey brings an army to our borders, our younger wolves will fight to the death to protect her."
Lucian's obsidian-amber eyes flashed with lethal pride in the torchlight. "Let Christian Grey come, Darian. He murdered her family, and he brought his blades to our gates. We will teach the Silverfang pack why the Midnight Blood reigns supreme over this continent."
Darian bowed his head with deep loyalty, turning to inspect the fortress perimeter as Lucian mounted the stairs to his royal tower suite, ready to reclaim his Queen.
Before retreating to the private quarters, Kaelen stood by the high stone balcony overlooking the great courtyard. The Midnight Blood pack members were already preparing for war, stoking forge fires, sharpening broadswords, and loading heavy wagons with provisions. She could feel the ancient, wild heartbeat of the mountain beneath her boots. She was no longer an isolated rogue running for her life through the dark; she was standing at the side of an empire's ruler, ready to reclaim her birthright and forge a new dynasty.
Standing beside the stone balustrade, Kaelen looked out over the endless sea of pines, the wind whipping her hair. She felt the ancient magic of the Northern Spine pulsing through the earth. With Lucian's warriors backing her, she would finally bring justice to the Silverfang pack and avenge her fallen house. She smiled into the darkness, ready for the dawn.
