The Warlord's Prize

The scent of the mate bond hung in the ruined cabin like an atmospheric charge before a lightning strike.
It was an overpowering sensory flood: dark northern pine needles crushed beneath heavy boots, the crisp metallic bite of sub-zero frost, rich cedar woodsmoke, and the primal, untamed musk of the most lethal apex predator on the continent.
To Freja’s inner wolf, which had slept curled in cold isolation since her father’s death, the scent was an irresistible summon—a call that made her blood thrum in her veins and her core pulse with a sudden, startling warmth that defied the freezing air pouring through her shattered doorway.
Yet Freja’s conscious mind rebelled with every ounce of stubborn pride she possessed.
She had watched her mother wither and die of grief after her father’s exile. She had watched southern alphas treat their she-wolves as property, broodmares, and tokens of political alliance. She had sworn upon the frozen grave of Torvald Lindqvist that she would never bow her head to an alpha's growl, and she would never wear a mating collar for any beast alive.
Even one as devastatingly, terrifyingly magnificent as Erik Vane.
The word hung in the freezing mountain air between them like a decree of supreme fate: *Mine.*
Freja felt the electric shockwave of the mate bond rippling through every nerve ending in her body, screaming at her to drop her weapons, step into his arms, and bare her throat to the terrifying warlord towering before her.
Instead, every instinct of survival she had inherited from her exiled father roared to life.
She stepped back into the doorway of her cabin, leveling her twin Nordic steel knives at Erik Vane’s broad, bare chest.
"I am not your anything, Warlord," Freja hissed, her voice ringing clear over the howling wind, her golden-hazel eyes blazing with defiant fire. "Take another step toward this threshold, and I will put four inches of cold steel between your ribs."
A low, dangerous rumble of amusement resonated deep within Erik Vane’s chest.
He didn't flinch. He didn't look at the knives. His piercing glacier-blue gaze swept over her—taking in her silver-white braid, her fierce posture, the wild, untouchable beauty of her face, and the sweet scent of clover and winter frost that was driving his inner wolf into a frenzy of possessive hunger.
Behind him, four massive wa
When Erik stepped across the threshold, Freja didn't just slash with her steel knives; she reached into her leather belt pouch with blinding speed, throwing a handful of finely ground dried wolfsbane and mountain sulfur powder directly into his face.
The toxic powder was designed to blind a shifter's acute nasal passages and sting their eyes with caustic burn.
Erik didn't even flinch. He drew in a sharp breath through his teeth, his wolf's supernatural healing factor neutralizing the toxin in half a second, his glacier-blue eyes flashing with genuine, predatory amusement.
"Wolfsbane and sulfur," Erik chuckled, his deep baritone vibrating through her chest as he locked her wrists in his iron grip. "Clever, my fierce girl. Most southern she-wolves would have wept or begged. You try to poison me with my own mountain weeds."
"Next time I'll use crushed aconite and silver shavings, you northern brute!" Freja spat, her teeth bared inches from his chin.
"I look forward to seeing you try," Erik murmured, his grip shifting as he swept her up against his chest.
rriors of the Frostborn clan emerged from the snowy pine trees, their breath steaming, clad in heavy bear-fur cloaks and iron-studded leather armor.
"Alpha," his second-in-command, a massive scarred warrior named Gunnar, spoke with a low bow. "The southern patrol is eliminated. Calder Graves was scouting the southern passes. We should return to the high road before the blizzard seals the valley."
Erik did not turn his head. His eyes never left Freja’s face.
"Pack her belongings, Gunnar," Erik commanded, his baritone smooth as crushed ice and absolute as winter law. "Take her bow, her furs, and her medicine chests. She leaves with us."
Freja’s blood flared hot with outrage. "I am not leaving my home! You have no authority over the borderlands, Erik Vane! This cabin belongs to the Lindqvist line!"
"The Lindqvist line was banished from the south ten years ago," Erik replied, stepping across the threshold into the cabin with slow, unhurried, terrifying confidence. "And Calder Graves’s raiders just tracked you to this valley. If I leave you here, another hunting party will arrive before sunrise. They will drag you south in chains to breed your Moon Priestess blood into Calder’s line."
"I would die first!" Freja snarled.
"I know you would," Erik whispered, his voice dropping into a dark, smoky register that vibrated straight through her breastbone. "Which is why I am not giving you the choice."
He moved with the blinding speed of a striking viper.
Freja slashed her right knife in a vicious defensive arc, aiming to slice his forearm, but Erik didn't even blink. He caught her right wrist in an iron grip, twisting with precise, gentle leverage that forced her fingers to open, sending the knife clattering to the floorboards.
Freja twisted her body, driving her left blade toward his throat, but Erik caught her other wrist in his second hand, pulling her arms up against his chest, pinning her slender frame flush against his towering, furnace-hot body.
Freja gasped as the contact sent an intoxicating, blinding jolt of celestial heat searing through her skin.
His scent enveloped her completely—dark winter pine, crushed ozone, aged leather, and pure, raw alpha dominance. She could feel the granite hardness of his chest muscles against her breasts, the heavy thud of his heart hammering in perfect synchronization with hers.
"Let me go, you savage!" Freja spat, struggling violently in his grip, refusing to surrender to the intoxicating pull of the bond.
Erik looked down into her flushed, beautiful face, his glacier-blue eyes dark with primal fascination.
"Fierce little wolf," Erik murmured, his voice a low growl against her temple. "You fight like a winter storm. But you belong in the north now. Under my roof. Under my protection."
With effortless, breathtaking power, Erik swept his arm beneath her thighs, lifting her off her feet. He spun her over his broad shoulder in a clean, effortless fireman's carry, securing her legs with his left forearm while she pummeled his muscular back with her fists.
"Put me down, Vane! Put me down or I swear by the Moon Goddess I will gut you in your sleep!" Freja shouted, thrashing against his grip.
Erik slapped her buttocks with a firm, stinging, possessive smack that made her gasp in shock.
"Save your breath for the mountain pass, little mate," Erik said smoothly, walking out of the ruined cabin into the howling gale. "You have a long ride to Valgard Citadel."
Waiting outside in the snow stood an enormous war-steed—a black Percheron stallion with iron horseshoes and heavy leather barding, bred to endure Arctic blizzards.
Gunnar and the warriors had already secured her yew bow, her medicine satchels, and her fur blankets onto a pack mule.
Erik swung up into the heavy saddle with Freja held firmly before him, settling her sideways across his lap, wrapping his massive, fur-lined bear-skin cloak around them both, shielding her completely from the biting wind.
Freja tried to push away, but Erik’s large, scarred arm clamped around her waist like an iron band, drawing her back against his chest. His chin rested lightly against the crown of her head, his warmth radiating through the heavy wool of her tunic like a roaring hearth fire.
"Gunnar, sound the war horn," Erik commanded, wheeling the great black war-steed north toward the towering, snow-capped peaks of the Frostborn mountains. "Tell Valgard that the Alpha has found his Luna."
Gunnar raised a carved ram’s horn to his lips, blowing a deep, resonant blast that echoed across the pine valleys, answering the thunder of the blizzard.
Freja closed her eyes, exhausted and shivering from the raw sensory overload of the bond, her cheek pressed against the hard, protective wall of Erik Vane’s chest. She had been captured by the most feared warlord in the continent.
She hated him for his arrogance, she hated him for his power, but as the great stallion surged into the freezing whiteout, Freja knew in her soul that her solitary life was gone forever—and that a war for the winter throne had begun.
As the black war-steed climbed higher into the frost-cracked granite passes of the Frostborn territory, the storm clouds parted overhead to reveal a sky ablaze with the celestial fires of the Aurora Borealis. Curtains of iridescent emerald, violet, and electric sapphire danced across the snowy peaks, illuminating the jagged mountain road in ghostly, magical light.
Erik’s warriors rode in strict tactical formation, their heavy iron shields slung across their backs, their keen wolf senses scanning the ridgelines for southern pursuit.
Occasionally, Gunnar or one of the younger scouts would raise a low, rhythmic chant in ancient Old Norse—a traditional travel song of the Frostborn recounting the creation of the world from the frost of Niflheim and the sacred fire of Muspelheim.
Freja lay held against Erik's chest, her ear pressed over the steady, thunderous cadence of his heart.
Despite herself, she could feel the impossible furnace of his body keeping the deadly alpine hypothermia at bay. Every breath he exhaled misted in the freezing air above her forehead, his large hand resting warm and possessive over her waist, his thumb occasionally brushing over the deerskin of her thigh.
She looked up at his chiseled profile against the emerald glow of the aurora. His jaw was set like carved granite, his eyes scanning the ridges with unyielding vigilance, but whenever his gaze flicked down to her, the brutal warlord’s expression softened into something that made her throat tighten with breathless wonder.
*He didn't take me as a prisoner,* she realized with a jolt of terrifying clarity. *He truly believes the Goddess gave me to him.*
She gripped the edges of his bear-skin cloak, her fingers digging into the thick fur, bracing herself for whatever trials awaited her inside the dragon's lair of Valgard Citadel.
