Chapter 3
Valgard Citadel
The Frost Wolf's Defiant Luna · Lyra Thorne · 8 min read
The descent into the great fjord basin was an epic journey through frozen geological time.
For ten miles, the narrow mountain trail wound along the sheer vertical cliffs of the Skadi Ridge, where century-old glacial ice hung suspended in monumental blue-tinted arches above the road. Below the trail, the Frost Fjord stretched eighty miles out toward the northern sea—a deep, dark expanse of sapphire water so cold that only the ice-streaked hulls of Frostborn longships and the pods of Arctic orcas could navigate its depths.
As the war party rounded the final basalt promontory, the true scale of Valgard Citadel struck Freja with the physical force of a blow.
The fortress was not simply built upon the mountain; it was fused into the bedrock itself. A colossal central keep of black basalt rose twelve stories above the water, flanked by four concentric curtain walls of dressed stone sixty feet high. Waterfalls of glacial melt cascaded down the cliffs on either side, routed through carved stone aqueducts to turn massive iron waterwheels that powered the clan’s underground blast furnaces and grain mills.
Over ten thousand Frostborn Lycans lived within the sheltered valley below the keep—a thriving, fortified city of timber longhouses, stone forges, and smoking peat hearths that had never fallen to an invader in nine hundred years.
To the southern packs, Valgard was a dark myth of bloodthirsty savages and blood-soaked altars.
To the northern wolves, it was the impregnable sanctuary of civilization, honor, and unbroken freedom.
For sixteen grueling hours, the Frostborn war party rode through the treacherous mountain passes of the northern wolds.
The landscape was a majestic, brutal realm of sheer granite precipices, frozen waterfalls suspended like crystalline pillars against black rock, and narrow ice ledges where a single misstep meant plunging thousands of feet into the raging glacial rivers below.
Throughout the entire journey, Erik Vane had not released his grip on Freja for a single second.
He held her securely against his chest within the thick folds of his bear-skin cloak, absorbing the impact of the stallion's gait with his own body, shielding her face from the biting ice crystals whenever the wind crested fifty knots. Whenever Freja shivered, Erik tightened his arm, his furnace-like Lycan heat pouring into her blood, warming her with an unyielding, protective dominance that both infuriated and comforted her.
As dawn broke through the clouds, the blizzard finally parted, revealing the staggering majesty of the northern fjords.
Below them lay the vast, dark expanse of the Frost Fjord, its deep waters dotted with floating ice floes that gleamed like polished turquoise beneath the pale golden rays of the winter sun.
And perched atop a monumental granite cliff rising eight hundred feet above the water stood *Valgard Citadel*.
Freja drew in a sharp, involuntary breath of awe.
The ancient fortress had been carved directly from the living basalt of the mountain by the first Lycan kings a thousand years ago. Monumental walls of black stone forty feet thick rose into the pale sky, crowned by jagged battlements and towering watchtowers where great iron braziers burned with roaring birch fires. Across the sheer chasm separating the fortress from the mountain pass stretched a colossal stone drawbridge suspended by massive forged-iron chains.
From the highest tower of the keep flew the great banner of the Frostborn: a snarling silver Arctic wolf crowned by a crescent moon on a field of midnight black.
As the war party approached the drawbridge, the great iron gates of Valgard groaned open.
A hundred armored Lycan warriors lined the parapets, their heavy poleaxes and shields raised in salute, their deep, guttural cheers echoing across the frozen fjord:
"Hail the Alpha! Hail Erik Vane! Winter's King!"
Erik rode through the outer portcullis into the massive cobblestone courtyard of the citadel.
The courtyard was alive with the fierce, disciplined energy of a sovereign pack. Hundreds of clan members—warriors in chainmail, blacksmiths hammering steel at glowing open forges, weavers in dyed wool, and pack children running with domesticated timber wolf pups—froze in their tracks, turning their eyes toward the black stallion.
Every eye fixed upon the woman cradled in Erik's arm.
Freja felt the weight of hundreds of predatory gazes raking over her form. Her silver-white braid had come partially undone, spilling over her shoulders like moonlight, her golden-hazel eyes burning with proud defiance as she sat upright in Erik's lap, refusing to lower her head before the northern wolves.
Whispers rippled through the courtyard:
*"Look at her hair... she has the blood of the Moon Priests..."*
*"The Alpha brought a southern exile into the keep..."*
*"She sits before him uncollared..."*
Erik drew the stallion to a halt before the monumental carved stone staircase leading up to the Great Hall.
He dismounted in one fluid, powerful motion, turned, and reached up to lift Freja from the saddle. When her boots touched the frozen cobblestones, she immediately tried to step back to establish her own ground, but her legs were stiff and trembling from sixteen hours of riding through the freezing gale.
Her knees buckled.
Before she could hit the stones, Erik’s arm was around her waist, catching her effortlessly, his large, scarred hand pressing her against his side.
"Lean on me, Freja," Erik commanded softly, his velvet baritone heard only by her.
"I don't need your help, Vane," she hissed under her breath, trying to pull away.
Erik’s jaw hardened. Without another word, he scooped her up into his arms, carrying her up the grand stone steps with effortless stride, ignoring her muffled protests.
Standing at the top of the stairs, flanked by four elderly clan elders in embroidered furs, stood Thorsten—the venerable First Elder of the Frostborn, a massive, one-eyed warrior whose face was a map of ancient scars.
Thorsten’s single gray eye narrowed as Erik approached carrying Freja.
"Erik," Thorsten rumbled, his voice like grinding millstones. "The border scouts reported you engaged Calder Graves’s raiders at the Black Ridge. You return with blood on your blade... and an exile’s daughter in your arms."
Erik stopped before the elders. He did not set Freja down. He looked at Thorsten with the cold, absolute authority of an Alpha whose word was unquestioned law.
"This is Freja Lindqvist," Erik announced, his voice booming across the courtyard so that every warrior, every woman, and every child in Valgard heard the decree. "The Moon Goddess brought her to my path. The scent of pine and frost has answered my blood. She is my fated mate. And she will wear the Luna crown of the Frostborn."
A collective intake of breath swept through the entire clan.
Thorsten’s eye widened, his scarred fist tightening around his carved staff. "A southern exile as Luna? The clan council will demand—"
"The clan council may demand whatever it pleases," Erik cut in, his glacier-blue eyes flashing with pure, dominant alpha steel that made even the ancient elder take a half-step back. "My blood has chosen. The matter is finished."
Erik turned and carried Freja through the monumental carved double doors of the keep into the Great Hall.
The Great Hall was vast and magnificent: soaring timber rafters supported by colossal pillars of black granite, three massive stone hearths roaring with whole birch logs, and walls draped in battle banners, shields, and the pelts of legendary mountain beasts.
Erik carried her past the central feast tables up a private spiral staircase carved from the solid stone of the keep, ascending three levels into the High Tower.
He kicked open a heavy oak door bound in polished bronze, stepping into an expansive, circular sanctuary.
The High Tower suite was breathtaking: floors of dark polished pine covered in thick white bear-skin rugs, an enormous four-poster bed fashioned from ancient mountain ash draped in heavy furs and woven wool blankets, a roaring fireplace of carved granite, and monumental arched windows looking out over the panoramic beauty of the snow-covered fjords.
Erik set Freja down gently on the soft fur rug before the hearth.
Freja immediately spun to face him, backing toward the fire, her chest heaving, her golden eyes flashing with raw fury.
"You had no right to make that announcement down there!" she cried, her voice trembling with outrage. "You don't own me, Erik Vane! I don't care if your wolf smells pine or frost! I will never be your Luna!"
Erik stood in the center of the room, unfastening his heavy bear-fur cloak and tossing it onto an oak bench.
He stood tall, broad-shouldered, and magnificent in his black leather warrior tunic, his glacier-blue eyes burning with a dark, patient certainty that made her heart race with terrifying speed.
"You are my Luna, Freja," Erik whispered, his baritone filling the quiet room with the unyielding weight of an ancient avalanche. "You may fight it today. You may fight it tomorrow. But as long as the winter sun rises over these fjords, you belong to me."
He stepped toward the door, pausing with his hand on the heavy bronze latch.
"Rest, little mate. Elena will bring food, hot water, and fresh clothes. Tonight, we dine together in the hall. And you will see that a Frostborn warlord knows how to cherish what is his."
With that, Erik slipped out the door, locking it behind him, leaving Freja standing alone in the firelight, her soul trembling in the grip of the winter king.
After Erik departed, locking the bronze latch of the High Tower chamber, Freja remained standing before the roaring hearth for a long time, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped falcon.
She walked slowly to the monumental arched window, resting her hands against the cool, carved stone sill.
The view took her breath away.
Below her, the entire expanse of the Frost Fjord lay bathed in the silver glow of the rising full moon. The black water reflected the snow-dusted battlements of the citadel, where dozens of iron braziers burned with bright orange flames, casting dancing sparks into the crisp winter night. Out on the parapets, armored sentries paced their rounds with rhythmic, disciplined precision, their wolf senses guarding the sleep of five thousand clan members.
Freja reached up, touching the delicate silver chain beneath her tunic where her mother’s Moon Priestess amulet rested against her skin.
She had spent five years running from pack territory, convinced that all alphas were ruthless tyrants who sought only to dominate, exploit, and destroy. But looking out over Valgard Citadel, feeling the quiet, fierce dignity of the northern people, and remembering the raw, reverent vulnerability in Erik Vane’s eyes, a dangerous, thrilling truth began to dawn in her chest.
Erik Vane was not Calder Graves.
Erik Vane was an emperor of the winter wolds—a man who carried a mountain of responsibility upon his scarred shoulders, and whose blood had recognized her as his equal, his sovereign partner, and his queen.
A soft knock sounded at the heavy oak door, and the bronze latch turned, announcing the arrival of Signora Astrid with hot herbal baths and clean royal furs.
Freja squared her shoulders, her chin lifting with royal Lindqvist pride.
The Frost Alpha had claimed her as his mate. But tonight, she would show Erik Vane that a Moon Priestess did not submit to an alpha's command—she met him as his match, fire for fire, steel for steel.
